shirley - behind the lens: Free Download

Can you believe it is the end of January already? A new month means a new calendar - February's calendar for your computer desktop.

[1]

I often get inquiries about a photo like the one featured in February's calendar - sometimes I am asked if I used a black backdrop or a special light set up. The answer is no. I shot the bouquet at night, at the kitchen table. The lights are all out except for those above the kitchen table. The lights create a spotlight for the flowers. Then I used the spot meter on my camera (DSLR's will have this option, many point and shoot cameras do too - even my iPhone 4S has the ability to spot meter somewhat) and metered the bright part of the bouquet. The result - a dramatic bouquet on a black background.

Hopefully you've found this month's calendar post useful. Be sure to check back at the end of February for next month's calendar link!

Penultimate for iPad goes free, Evernote Hello for iPhone updated to version 2.0

Screenshot_2013-01-31_11_03_AM
Evernote’s on a tear lately. After acquiring the iPad handwriting app Penultimate in May 2012, it has updated the app to support Evernote syncing and has reduced the price to an agreeable zero dollars.

The app receives a slight visual overhaul, but stays true to its roots as a simple notepad, though topic and theme-specific pads can be purchased separately. Penultimate now also supports Evernote’s excellent text recognition, so even if you’re not using OCR to convert your scribbles to type, you can search the app for specific content. Used with a capacitive stylus, Penultimate is quite a useful tool, especially if you don’t want to pay the high price for Paper.

Evernote Hello has also been upgraded, coming with a new design on the iPhone and support for business card recognition, which is “unlimited for a limited time.” Hello also supports Facebook and LinkedIn, so you can add contacts by email address and have the service do the rest.

What’s interesting â€" and essential â€" about Hello is how it associates the people you meet with the space around you. If you meet someone for the first time at a business lunch, Hello will parse as much data from your phone as it can; it will take the relevant Evernote notes such as meeting minutes or point-form scribbles, as well as location data of where and when you met that individual. It’s sometimes easier to recall a person’s name or face if you have the context surrounding the initial meeting.

Netbot updated with direct Messages on App.net, goes free in effort to spur service adoption

When Netbot was launched back in October of last year, we praised it as a fine client for the fledgling App.net service. Based on the same user interface as the popular Tweetbot client by Tapbots, it’s no surprise that we liked the Netbot client. Since then both the service and the app have evolved, most recently with the addition of a File API and 10GB of cloud storage. While no major apps yet seem to have taken advantage of the File API, the previous addition to App.net â€" a Messaging API â€" is seeing growing adoption.

To boot, version 1.3 of Netbot recently hit the iOS App Store with support for the Messaging API, adding a button to the bottom toolbar to get you into your App.net messages (in the process pushing the dedicated profile button to the user-selectable fourth place slot). For those familiar with Tweetbot, Netbot’s implementation of the Messaging API should be quite familiar. In fact, it’s practically identical, save for the 256-character limit that App.net allows. Since Netbot gained push notifications in late October with version 1.1, if so enabled (instructions here) you’ll get them for your App.net messages too.

Messaging support isn’t the only thing that’s happening with Netbot â€" it’s also now free in the App Store, though for “an unspecified period of time”, according to developer Paul Haddad of Tapbots. Netbot debuted at $4.99 for both the iPhone and iPad versions. Tapbots lowered the price to literally nothing with the hope of spurring more users to look at App.net. As Haddad said from his own App.net account, the move does appear to have driven a bump of new users to the service. If that will be sustained is another question, though App.net does seem to be on a slow-but-steady rise. It doesn’t hurt Tapbots too much, as Haddad pointed out, they’re making more from App.net’s Developer Incentive Program than they are from App Store sales of Netbot.

So if you’ve been waiting for a reason to try out App.net’s pay service, the barrier to entry just dropped by five bucks.

iTunes dominates digital movies as physical media dies a slow death

iTunes Movies

Research firm NPD today issued a report highlighting Apple’s lead concerning electronic sell through (EST) of digital movies. Now, EST comprised just sixteen percent of the larger video on demand (VOD) revenue throughout the 2012 calendar year.

At the same time, iTunes dominated the EST market with a 45 percent share. Amazon was #2 with eighteen percent, followed by the $3 Walmart-owned Vudu (fifteen percent), #4 Xbox Video (fourteen percent) and Others taking up the remaining eight percent of the market.

Movies on Blu-ray and DVD discs? These accounted for a still respectable 61 percent of home video spending on movies, excluding Netflix and other movie-streaming subscriptions. However, that figure is notably down from 64 percent in 2011, despite average prices of Blu-ray movies falling seven percent to $19.97 per unit. Steve Jobs was right, Blu-ray indeed is “a bag of hurt”…

According to NPD data [1] , the market for digital downloads rose from fourteen percent in 2011 to sixteen percent of the home market in 2012. VOD services grew from eleven percent to twelve percent of the consumer movie market.

“Whereas iTunes dominates the market for movie EST, and Netflix leads the subscription streaming market, there is more competition for Internet video on demand rentals”, NPD said.

NPD (2012 video market 001)

To me, the biggest takeaway is that Blu-ray â€" and consequentially physical media â€" is dying a slow death. In hindsight, Steve Jobs’ insight concerning physical media â€" and Blu-ray specifically â€" was impeccable, as always.

Here’s Steve [2] back in October 2008, nearly four and a half years ago:

Blu-ray is just a bag of hurt. It’s great to watch the movies, but the licensing of the tech is so complex, we’re waiting till things settle down and Blu-ray takes off in the marketplace.

Since then, Blockbuster went bankrupt while digital services rose as we’ve all gradually grown accustomed to getting our entertainment digitally.

NPD (2012 video market 002)

As the final nail in the physical media coffin, Apple’s partner Philips last week announced its exit from the consumer electronics business.

Philips invented the friggin’ Blu-ray, you know.

The Wall Street Journal [3] has more:

In the 1930s, Philips was the world’s biggest supplier of radios. The Dutch company invented the audio cassette in 1963, made the first videocassette recorder in 1972, and launched the compact disc in 1983.

But Philips struggled to make the most of its inventions, most notoriously by losing a battle for the dominant videotape standard to Japan’s VHS in the 1970s and 1980s before failing to anticipate today’s disc-free, digital-entertainment era dominated by downloaded and streamed entertainment via the Internet.

I expect Sony and Panasonic to give it up next.

This is 21st century â€" we no longer need physical media.

I don’t want to spend a fortune upgrading my DVDs to high-definition Blu-ray movies only to be forced to re-purchase my collection on some new physical format supporting 4K resolution.

Those days are, thankfully, gone forever.

Take note, Blu-ray Association [4] …

5 tweaks that you must download after jailbreaking iOS 6

5 must have jailbreak tweaks

Once the iOS 6 jailbreak is released, there are a few tweaks that you absolutely must download. Thankfully, Cydia will be better equipped to handle the barrage of users so that you will be able to download all of your favorite apps and tweaks with little issue.

While we wait, why not consider a few of my must-have jailbreak tweaks for iOS 6? Post jailbreak, we’ll follow up with more recommended apps and tweaks, but we think this list would be enough to wet your appetite…

NowNow

Siri has become almost unbearable to use in all but the most basic situations. Maybe I’m just that hard to understand, but it seems like she gets things right about 10% of the time. The voice search embedded within Google’s search app is infinitely more accurate and expeditious than Siri. Although it can’t perform integrated operating system functions like Siri can, it’s still my go to app for doing voice searches.

NowNow is a jailbreak tweak that allows you to assign Google voice search to an Activator gesture. This means that instead of holding the Home button and launching Siri, you can hold the Home button and launch Google voice search instead.

For a similar tweak with a few additional options, be sure to have a look at ActiVoice as well.

Read the full NowNow article .

Auxo

Personally, this is probably reason #1 as to why I’m looking forward to jailbreaking my iPhone 5. Auxo looked great on the iPhone 4S, but it’s one of the first tweaks that was actually designed with the iPhone 5′s larger screen in mind.

Its recent update added features like VIP apps, new toggles, and native Activator gesture support. Put it this way, I’ve tested hundreds upon hundreds of tweaks over the years, but this is one of the few that really stands heads-and-shoulders above the rest. An absolute must have, especially for the iPhone 5′s larger screen. Also, look out for an iPad version soon.

Read the full Auxo article . Also, read about the Auxo 1.2 update .

AssistantLove

Some people still can’t understand my infatuation with AssistantLove, but that’s probably because they’ve never used it. One of the primary features of AssistantLove is the ability to control music from Spotify using Siri, just like you would with the stock Music app. This means that you have a virtually unlimited supply of music that you can control using only your voice.

When you consider that the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch all support Siri, you can see why AssistantLove has the potential to appeal to the masses. Don’t miss it.

IntelliScreen X

Even though it’s old news now, it would be an outright crime to leave IntelliScreen X off of any must-download list. If you’ve been around for a while, then you know what IntelliScreen X is all about. For those of you who are new, or those of you who are forgetful, let me provide a friendly reminder.

Put simply, IntelliScreen X is the way that Notification Center should be. It allows you to read your Twitter Timeline, Facebook wall, and post new tweets and status updates as well. It allows you to quickly read and respond to SMS messages, Email, and view your favorite RSS feeds. Keep in mind that all of this happens from the convenience of Notification Center. In fact, I believe the SMS integration is alone worth the price of admission.

Of course, there are more features to talk about regarding IntelliScreen X, but I suggest you just look at the video walkthrough above.

Read the full IntelliScreen X article .

iFile

The is arguably the one “power user” jailbreak app to make this list. If you’re familiar with Finder on the Mac, or Explorer on Windows, then you pretty much know what to expect with iFile. iFile allows you to explore, create, and modify at will, anything within iOS’ root file structure. It’s an extremely powerful app that’s essentially a staple for any long time jailbreaker.

iFile also allows you to install packages without having to know terminal commands. You can alter plist files, and transfer files via a web server or via Bluetooth. If there’s absolutely one tweak that I could not under any circumstances live without, it would definitely be iFile.

Very honorable mention

Springtomize 2

Dashboard X

Stride

Quasar

biteSMS

Keep in mind, that some of these tweaks and apps may not be immediately compatible with iOS 6. At this moment, many developers are scrambling to update their packages, but there’s no guarantee that every single item listed below will be ready on launch day.

Temple Run 2 Sets New Mobile Game Download Record - Eric Johnson - Mobile

Imangi is giving Rovio a (temple) run for its money. According to a press release [1] , Imangi Studios’ newest game, Temple Run 2, was downloaded 50 million times in 13 days, besting the previous record [2] held by Rovio Entertainment’s Angry Birds Space, which crossed the 50 million threshold after 35 days last year. It’s worth pointing out, however, that the main version of Angry Birds Space costs 99 cents, while the Temple Run games are free. Rovio’s game has been downloaded more than 100 million times, and was the most popular [3] paid app on both iPhone and iPad in 2012.

How to download and delete individual songs on your iPhone and iPad with iTunes Match

How to download and delete individual songs on your iPhone and iPad with iTunes Match

How to download and delete individual songs on your iPhone and iPad with iTunes Match

iTunes Match [1] , Apple’s streaming service for music, matches your entire music library and allows you to stream music directly to your iPhone or iPad wherever you have a data connection. There may come times where you don’t have a data connection and would like to download certain music to your iPhone or iPad for use when you don’t have service. As of iOS 6.1 [2] , you can now download and delete individual songs, instead of whole albums, right on your iPhone and iPad.

Here’s how…

Before proceeding any further, you’ll need to make sure you’re subscribed to iTunes Match. It’s a paid service that Apple offers for $24.99 per year. If you aren’t already signed up, here’s a guide to get you started before you continue any further.

Once you’re all signed up to iTunes Match and have your library matched, continue on.

How to download an individual song on iPhone and iPad with iTunes Match

There are many reasons you may want to physically download music to your iPhone or iPad. Whether you’re planning on being on a plane or in an area that doesn’t have good cell service, you can download your content from iTunes Match straight to your device for playback anytime.

  1. Launch the Music app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Find the artist name for the song you’d like to download. (You can also use album or song view, whichever you’d prefer to search with.)
  3. Drill down to the song you want to download by album.
  4. Next to the name of the song, you’ll see a download button to the right. It looks like a cloud with a download icon in the middle. Tap on it.
  5. You’ll notice that the song of your choice has now begun to download to your device. Give it a few seconds to finish download and that’s it. It’s now physically downloaded onto your device for playback whenever you’d like.

How to delete an individual song on iPhone and iPad with iTunes Match

Storage space can be precious and if you’re running out, clearing out songs if you’re an iTunes Match subscriber is a perfect option. You’ll still be able to play the songs you delete via streaming wirelessly, they just won’t be taking up actual space on your iPhone or iPad.

  1. Launch the Music app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Find the name of the artist or album for the song you’d like to delete.
  3. Drill down to the actual song. You may find the title using whatever search method you’d like.
  4. You’ll notice that there is no download icon next to the song name because it’s already downloaded to your device’s physical storage.
  5. Swipe across the name of the song to the right.
  6. You’ll notice that a Delete button has now appeared. Tap on it.
  7. You should now see a download button appear to the right of the song title. This means it was deleted from your actual iPhone or iPad and you can download it again whenever you want or stream it from wherever you have an active data connection.
  8. That’s all there is to it!

‘Pages+’ adds customizable backgrounds to each Home screen page, boasts Barrel compatibility

Pages + Hero

Evasi0n , the much anticipated jailbreak tool for iOS 6 compatible devices, will be available in the very near future. With that in mind, many jailbreak developers are updating their tweaks and apps, and even establishing brand new creations to prepare for the new jailbreak.

One such developer is SBCoders, the same team behind such hits as Aero and Dash . SBCoders’ latest creation, the yet to be released Pages+, continues the tradition of solid jailbreak tweaks. Pages+ allows you to customize each page on the iPhone’s Home screen. You can accomplish this by means of custom wallpaper packs, or by its built in page tinting system.

The most exciting thing about Pages+, however, is that it plays nice with Aaron Ash’s Barrel. Barrel, of course, is the jailbreak app that allows you to implement various page transitions on your iPhone. When you mix both creations together, you’re guaranteed to get some wild results.

Here’s what SBCoders’ has to say about Pages+:

Pages+ has two modes, page mode as seen in the first two screenshots adds “cards” to your home screen pages. The opacity and color of these “cards” are customizable, making them blend in seamlessly with any wallpaper. The second setting â€" wallpaper mode â€" is where the cool stuff really starts happening. In this mode every SpringBoard page has it’s own wallpaper (customizable via theme bundles. This makes it almost effortless for Winterboard theme artists to integrate Pages+ with their themes; making the overall experience that much more immersive).

The Pages mode allows you to colorize the Home screen pages in one of six colors: black, white, red, green, blue and yellow. You can also adjust the intensity of each color using a handy slider. The page mode only covers the primary app icons on the Home screen, and doesn’t cover the icons in the dock. It’s a different, yet interesting look. It kind of reminds me of how FolderEnhancer looks when opening a folder, yet on a permanent basis.

While the page mode is nice and all, the real standout feature here is the wallpaper mode. In this mode, you can activate bundles of different wallpaper packs downloaded from Cydia. The beta version of Pages+ I tested came with three different bundles: default, season, and space.

The default wallpaper bundle is basically just a compilation of all of the iPhone’s built in wallpaper. The season bundle contains different nature scenes, and the space bundle, as you would expect, contains a pack feature celestial settings.

As I alluded to earlier, the best part of Pages+ is its compatibility with Barrel. When mixed together with wallpaper mode, you can create some extremely funky transitions. My personal favorite combination was the page fade transition mixed with the space bundle. Check out the video walkthrough above to see how awesome it looks.

What do you think? Does Pages+ bring enough to the table to warrant your consideration? As of now, I don’t have any details as far as release date and price are concerned, but again, you should look for it to hit Cydia shortly after the iOS 6 untethered jailbreak is made available to the public. Be sure to let me think about it in the comment section below.

BowBlade - A $185 Bow and Arrow Gaming Accessory for iPhone

posted January 31st, 2013 4:57 PM EST by arn in News

Here at TouchArcade we've been kinda down on iOS hardware gaming accessories. They tend to add bulk and cost and also sacrifice convenience, and I don't think the BowBlade changes any of that.

For $185, the BowBlade is an iPhone Bow and Arrow type accessory that was being shown at Macworld 2013. The iPhone goes in the front, you extend the bow and use a small trigger with your back hand to fire. The company reports over 35 games have support for the device and we shot a short video showing how it works:

The games use a combination of accelerometer and positioning in combination with the triggering system (which taps the screen in a certain location) to provide the overall gaming experience.

One of the sample games was an Augmented Reality type view of the real world in which you could shoot virtual bullets with the trigger. The more fleshed out games include a sniper-type one where you must move around in real space to find your targets, and a duck hunt type game (as seen in the video).

The device will go on sale on April 1st (seriously) for $185.

Disney Carnival {Free App} Simple & Fun for Little Kids

Disney CarnivalMy girls are always begging me to download new apps on my iPad and iPhone for them to play and secretly, okay perhaps it’s not such a big secret I really like to play most of them too. I received an email this morning about a new Disney Carnival App [1] that was FREE! Who can pass up a free app, especially a Disney one?! So I downloaded it to check it out and thought I’d share with you my thoughts on it.

The Disney Carnival App allows you to discover fun Disney themed activities including puzzles, coloring and music. This is a very simple app and my four year old really liked it. I think it would probably be good for ages 3-6, you might get your 7 and 8 year old to play it for a little while but I think with the limited amount of advanced activities they would get bored fast.

iPhone Screenshot 1

Puzzles:

The puzzles have an option to make them simple or harder (three different levels) which means the piece sizes are different â€" although the puzzle is printed on the screen in low opacity so you just grab each piece and put it in it’s matching spot, which makes this a great activity for the younger crowd. The level one puzzles have only 4 pieces while the level 3 puzzles have 12 pieces. There are six different puzzles to choose from.

Painting:

As with any app I really like the painting programs that have a bucket where you click on the part of the picture and it fills it in. This app doesn’t have that. There’s a paint brush, a colored pencil/marker, an eraser and 11 different colors to choose from. The pictures seem to be a little more complicated and not as simple so I think it’s pretty hard to stay in the lines when using your finger. There are six different pictures to choose from.

Music:

I expected the music section to have a little more to it but it’s just a mickey themed piano with an octave of keys that you can play to your heart’s consent. No music to follow, or songs, it’s just use your own creativity so I got bored fast and I think my older children would too.

Digital Books:

This is probably my least favorite part of the app. As with most free apps they always have a section where you can click on something to purchase. Personally I’d rather just pay for the app and have unlimited use to whatever is included. I hate the games where you play and then al of a sudden they want you to buy more things to be able to continue. The Digital Board Book section has a whole slew of books available. When you click on the book it shows you a written description of the book and then you can click on the video clip and i t will show you all the great things about the book. Now I’m not saying the books aren’t great but I’d prefer a section like this not to be included in the app. I guess that’s what you get with free apps- advertising to spend money, its where they get us as parents. When you click on the purchase button it takes you to the Apple store where you can purchase each board book individually for $4.99.

PROS:

  • Free
  • Great for young kids
  • Bright Colors
  • Fun Background Music
  • Disney Themed

CONS:

  • Simple- not good for older kids- in fact my 4 year old got bored pretty fast
  • Fun Background Music- is repetitive and could get annoying quickly
  • No Paint Bucket Option
  • Music section- needs a little more detail and interactive options
  • Book to purchase option

MY RECOMMENDATION:

So if you’re looking for a good free app to keep your 3 year old entertained while you’re out and about running errands or sitting in the doctor’s office waiting room and you like Disney then download [2] this right now for your iPhone or iPad but if you’re kids are a little older then I think I’d skip this one.

iPad 5 to use same thin-film touchscreen tech as iPad mini

iPad 5 mockup (Martin uit Utrecht 002)

Although reports regarding Apple’s next-generation tablet can’t seem to settle on a release date, they do seem to agree about most everything else. The iPad 5 is said to sport an all-new, mini-like design with smaller bezels and a much thinner profile.

Of course, this raises the question: how does Apple plan to make the tablet thinner while keeping its Retina display and 10-hour battery life? Well for starters, it’s reportedly going to use the same thin-film touchscreen tech found in the iPad mini…

That technology is called ‘GF Ditto’ technology, also known as GF2. And it allowed Apple to make the mini much thinner and significantly lighter than the G/G touchscreen tech it used in the iPad 3.

From DigiTimes [1] (via iPhoneinCanada [2] ):

“Apple’s next generation 9.7-inch iPad will reportedly use the same G/F2 (DITO) thin-film type touch screen structure as the company’s iPad mini.

Apple’s current 9.7-inch iPad models use a G/G touch screen structure. The sources said Apple’s move to use DITO technology shows the company is looking to bump up its competition in the tablet segment and that it has more adequate supply to the technology compared to one-glass-solution (OGS) technology.”

The report goes on to say that Apple’s supply chain for the next-generation 9.7-inch iPad will be similar to the iPad mini’s, with Japan-based Nitto expected to supply the thin-film materials, and LG Display and Sharp providing the display panels.

It’s worth noting that the GF2 film was largely blamed for the iPad mini’s higher price tag and early supply constraints, as it caused mass production issues. It appears, though, that Apple has ironed out the kinks, as mini shipping estimates just dropped to 3-5 days .

Now, back to the iPad 5. A recent “leak” of the tablet’s rear shell indicates that it will look very similar to the mini, with smaller bezels and chamfered edges. And word is, Apple is working so hard on the redesign, that we may only see modest, if any, internal changes.

Early reports suggested we could see the 5 in the next few months, but we’re leaning towards an October release , right alongside the iPad mini 2 .
