AdBlocker Cydia Tweak Now Free, For a Limited Time | iPhone in Canada Blog

Blocking the ads in your browser can help speed up your browsing experience, as pages will often load much faster. If you jailbreak your iPhone, you can get a tweak called “AdBlocker”, that will help speed up mobile Safari, as well as other UIWebView based browsers and apps. It usually goes for $2.19, but is now free for a limited time.

For Safari and other Apps with web browser functionality!

AdBlocker is an easy to use and powerful tool, similar to extensions for your desktop browser. It blocks ads in Safari and other apps which are using browser-like views (UIWebView). If an app is using UIWebViews to display content (other browsers like Skyfire, browser in a twitter client,…) AdBlocker will block ads from being loaded and tries to optimize the space.

AdBlocker is designed to block image based ads in webcontent like websites and not advertisement in ad-supported apps.

AdBlock will reduce your data usage and often speed up loading of pages by blocking image based ads; extremely useful if you have a limited cellular data plan â€" it will save you money!

BlockLists are being downloaded from the net. No need to create huge configurationsfiles yourself.

AdBlocker is very fast, regex-based tool and can handle lists with thousands of entries without noticable slowing down the apps. Lists for 17 languages are build in, but you can easily add custom lists. Just google ‘adblock lists’ to find urls.

This is a true AdBlock equivalent to extension for desktop browsers, it uses huge lists that can single out specific parts of a domain, or only folders from a domain or even just a single image and therefor is superior to adblocking methods based only on hostnames.

Check Preferences.app for Settings and features.

AdBlocker is designed to block image based ads in webcontent like websites and not advertisement in ad-supported apps.

Features

  • fast and reliable AdBlocker
  • for Safari and other apps
  • add custom lists

AdBlocker version 1.30 is compatible with iOS 5x, and is available in Cydia for free, only until 12:00pm (GMT), on May 2nd, 2012. Go get it while you can!

Tech: Looking at alternatives to Instagram

I'm one of the millions of smartphone owners addicted to Instagram, the free camera app that makes tweaking and sharing photos miraculously easy. While it's wildly popular and the target of Facebook's $1 billion takeover deal, Instagram isn't the only camera app worth having.

I've had a chance to test a wide range of Instagram alternatives during choice picture-taking opportunities over the past few month. Of the dozen or so I tested, here are four I find myself using over and over again:

Photosynth by Microsoft Corp. Free. For iOS only (Apple's iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch).

Photosynth lets you take 360-degree panoramic photos that become interactive on a smartphone or computer screen. The app guides you as you stand in one place and capture photos in all directions. Then it stitches those images together to create a sphere-like panorama that viewers can scroll around in and zoom in and out.

It takes a bit of practice, and it's not an app I would use every day. But I found that in the right setting, the results can be breathtaking.

TiltShift Generator by Arts & Mobile. Free for basic features, 99 cents for higher resolution and album upload. For iOS only.

Tilt shift is a camera effect that blurs the edges of a picture, creating an optical illusion that makes everything in the photo look miniature.

Instagram has that feature. I prefer TiltShift Generator because it gives you more control.

You can control where and how much blurring to produce. You can also determine how much darkening around the corners you want to produce a vignette effect. Pictures turn out gorgeous.

Hipstamatic by Synthetic LLC. $1.99 for basic features, with 99-cent add-ons to give you more imaging options. For iOS only.

I had a hard time figuring Hipstamatic out, but it's worth making the effort.

Unlike most filtering apps, you don't adjust a photo after you've taken it. Instead, you choose different virtual lenses, flashes and film beforehand, and you can't change the setting after you take the shot.

The app is not very intuitive, the settings are hard to keep track of and the accompanying guide isn't very helpful. But I was able to catch on after a friend gave me a tutorial. Once you get a sense of which virtual lens works best under which conditions, you can create stunning photos.

PhotoToaster by East Coast Pixels, Inc. Free version called PhotoToaster Jr. Full version costs $1.99 and gives you more choices and control. For iOS and Android devices.

I love the ease of flipping through filters on Instagram until I see one that makes my photo pop, but sometimes I want a little more control over the specific effects.

PhotoToaster lets me do both. You can apply preset filters such as "Tuneup," ''Pro," ''Happy" and "Chill." You can also tap a button and have more precise control over exposure, color temperature, light and other settings.

I often brighten up a photo with PhotoToaster before importing it to Instagram. You can't fix an underexposed shot in Instagram, for example. But with PhotoToaster, my shot of a beautiful but dimly lit wisteria vine crawling up five stories of a building became infused with light.

None of these apps replace Instagram's addictive ability to let you instantly share pictures with friends and strangers alike.

Photosynth is probably the closest to having its own social network for sharing results, but you must go to its website and images are limited to the 360-degree panoramas. You also don't have a circle of friends you regularly exchange images with.

The other apps are more tools for enhancing your photos, which you then take elsewhere for sharing.

Free app allows travelers to complain about airport security screeners immediately

WASHINGTON -- A Sikh advocacy group launched a free mobile application Monday that allows travelers to complain immediately to the government if they feel they've been treated unfairly by airport screeners.

Launched at midnight by the Sikh Coalition, the FlyRights app had fielded two complaints by 10 a.m. EDT Monday.

The first complaint came from a woman who said she felt mistreated after she disclosed to a screener that she was carrying breast milk. A man who is Sikh filed the second complaint, saying he was subjected to extra security even though he had not set off any alarms. The woman's complaint was based on gender and the man's, religion, said coalition program director Amardeep Singh.

Singh said the Department of Homeland Security and Transportation Security Administration were notified of the app before its launch. The agencies agreed to allow the app to use the agencies' system for submitting the complaints.

The TSA said in a statement that it does not profile passengers on the basis of race, ethnicity or religion and works with communities, including the Sikh Coalition, "to help us understand unique passenger concerns." The agency said it supports "efforts to gather passenger feedback about the screening process."

The app, available for iPhone and Android phones, was conceived in response to complaints from Sikhs in the U.S, who since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks are routinely subjected to additional

inspection, Singh said. Some are made to remove their turbans, which Sikhs wear for religious reasons, Singh said.

The app is intended for everyone who feels they are racially profiled or subjected to other unfair treatment. It is also intended to provide better data on how often such incidents occur.

After screening, a person can go to the app and click on the "report" button. The app will fill in the person's name, phone number and email address. The app asks questions such as race and name of airport, as well as the basis of the complaint, such as religion or gender. It has "submit" and "share" buttons to post that a complaint was filed on social media. The app also contains information on rights of passengers and TSA procedures.

The Sikh Coalition gets hundreds of complaints of unfair treatment and profiling, Singh said. By contrast, he said, the Department of Homeland Security said in its last report to Congress on civil rights and civil liberties that 11 people in the U.S. submitted complaints in the first six months of 2011.

"My hope is that this app will exponentially increase the number of complaints filed with the TSA, flood the system so they get that this is a problem. For too long the Transportation Security Administration has been able to tell Congress this is not an issue, nobody's complaining," Singh said.

Passengers can ask to speak to supervisors or customer support managers at an airport, contact the TSA Contact Center, submit feedback through "Talk-to-TSA" online or file a civil-rights complaint through its website, the agency said.

Prabhjit Singh, a motivational speaker who is not related to Amardeep Singh, said he has been profiled 30 times, starting in February 2007 when he was taking an early morning flight from Baltimore International Airport to Alabama. In that incident, he was told he had to go through a mandatory pat-down of his turban, even though he had not set off the detector. But after asking for information on the TSA policy, a supervisor told him he could not fly.

Free iPhone App Helps Navigate Orlando Theme Parks

Elk Grove, CA (PRWEB) April 29, 2012

The newly released version of Shoreline Animation’s popular mobile app, Disney World Maps and Guides helps visitors navigate their way through Disney World theme parks and Universal Orlando more easily. The free app, compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, makes it easy to find the next attraction or dining option and also to plan one’s itinerary based on information such as wait times at various attractions and park hours.

Users can review dining options, pricing, attractions and look up ride wait times and park hours on any given day before adding their choices to an itinerary. This helps guests get the most out of their visit without having to waste time waiting in line or walking to a dining venue at the other end of the park without knowing if it’s what they want. The ability to email one’s itinerary lets families and groups coordinate with each other from different locations within a park or even from different parks. This includes Universal Orlando and all the Disney Theme parks such as Magic Kingdom, Wet ‘n Wild and others.

Many of Shoreline Animation’s mobile apps rank among the top 100 apps in the Travel Category. Disney World Maps and Guides [1] , released in August 2011, is no exception. The latest inclusion of Universal Orlando has made the app even more useful and popular, according to customer reviews.

About the company: Shoreline Animation has developed dozens of apps such as Flight Status, Airport Monitor, Bay Area Traffic Monitor and a number of language translator apps, many of which have received top ratings in their respective categories. The company’s web offerings include a website dedicated to free ecards [2] , personalized photo cards and printable mothers day cards [3] . Got-free-ecards.com has hundreds of free printable birthday cards [4] and ecards designs for various occasions.

Coolest Apps for Moms and Dads

Parenting Help for parents who want to be heroes.

Editor’s note: all of these apps are available on the Earnest Parenting AppStore [2] ! Just click the Featured Items category for easy access.

About a week after my husband and I got smart phonesâ€"and iPhone and an Androidâ€"we realized how easier our lives had become. As the parents of 3 children (my son: almost 11 months, and my daughter: 4-years old, and my oldest son: 10-years old), we began downloading applications that would help us to stay on top of our family’s hectic schedule! Suddenly, instead of resisting technology as we previously had, we embraced it. I downloaded apps that turned my phone into a baby monitor, a medical emergency resource, an appointment reminder, a weather forecaster, and a tool to teach my kids the value of responsibility.

Today, as busy parents we have found that our smartphones have become vital devices that help make our lifestyles much more manageable, and keep our family harmoniously organized.

Here is a list of the coolest apps for Moms and Dads:
1. My Health Records [3] ($5.99 â€" for iPhone) When it comes to the health issues of your family, Mom and Dad should know bestâ€"or at least have a handle on what health issues, prescriptions, immunizations, and family doctors they regularly use as part of their family health team. When it comes to scheduling doctor’s appointments, monitoring immunization records, and refilling prescriptions I’ve come to rely on the My Health Records app, a tool that tracks all my medical infoâ€"such as family health history, emergency contact numbers, health insurance plans, and family physician contacts in case of an emergency. The beauty of this app is that it keeps all of that random health information in one central place, so when you need it in a pinch it’s at your fingertips.

2. Cozi Family Organizer [4] (Free â€" for Android) The Cozi Family Organizer is a back-to-school wonder, an after-school best friend, a summer holiday spectacular! I honestly don’t know if my husband and I could manage our busy family without it! This app features everything busy parents need in their arsenal of family organizational toolsâ€"including an automatic appointment reminder tool, a color-coded calendar that can be customized to track the to-dos and appointments for each family member, a shopping list organizer, a family journal for treasured photos and memoriesâ€"all in the most trusted app you will ever download!

3. Foo Pets [5] (Free â€" for iPhone) When my eldest son turned 10 this year he started asking us for a puppy. Now I have no problem with a family pet if my kids share in the responsibility, but I wanted them to be prepared for all the responsibilities that a puppy demands. Introducing the Foo Pets app, a tool that allows your family to adopt a virtual, interactive “Marmaduke” Great Dane, and shows kids the value of taking care of a pet before in order to ready them for the reality of a real dog.

4. Baby Phone [6] ($2.99 â€" for iPhone) The Baby Phone app turns your iPhone into a fully-functional baby monitor. I started using this app along with a baby monitor to keep dibs on my youngest son while he was napping in his crib, but soon realized I didn’t need the larger bulky monitor at all! This app delivers an automatic alert as soon as your baby wakes up by calling your smart phone. This app also displays the current status of baby and you can adjust the microphone sensitivity right on screen as you desire.

5. Weatherbug [7] (Free â€" for Android) Now this app has saved me and my kids from an unexpected rain shower or heat wave in the midst of this crazy spring weather we’ve been having. I consult the Weatherbug app before school so I know how to dress the kids, or if I should pack an extra layer in their backpacks. This app displays up-to-the-minute weather conditions, hourly and weekly forecasts, and National Weather Service alerts for thousands of U.S. citiesâ€"as well as locations across the globe (which is ideal when planning a family vacation).

TSA said in a statement that it does not profile passengers on the basis of race, ethnicity or religion and is continually working with communities, including the Sikh Coalition, "to help us understand unique passenger concerns." The agency said it supports "efforts to gather passenger feedback about the screening process."

The app, available for iPhone and Android phones, was conceived in response to complaints from Sikhs in the U.S, who since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks are routinely subjected

to additional inspection, Singh said. Some are made to remove their turbans, which Sikhs wear for religious reasons, Singh said.

The app is intended for everyone who feels they are racially profiled or subjected to other unfair treatment. It is also intended to provide better data on how often such incidents occur.

After completing screening, a person can go to the app and click on the "report" button. The app will automatically fill in the person's name, phone number and email address.

By contrast, he said, the Department of Homeland Security said in its last report to Congress on civil rights and civil liberties that 11 people in the U.S. submitted complaints in the first six month of 2011.

"My hope is that this app will exponentially increase the number of complaints filed with the TSA, flood the system so they get that this is a problem. For too long the Transportation Security Administration has been able to tell Congress this is not an issue, nobody's complaining," Singh said.

Passengers can ask to speak to supervisors or customer support managers at an airport, contact the TSA Contact Center, submit feedback through "Talk-to-TSA" online or file a civil rights complaint through its website, the agency said.

Prabhjit Singh, a motivational speaker, said he has been profiled 30 times, starting in Feb. 2007 when he was taking an early morning flight from BWI to Alabama. In that incident, he was told he had to go through a mandatory pat-down of his turban, even though he had not set off the detector. But after asking for information on the TSA policy, a supervisor told him he could not fly.

"Out of those 30 incidents, I have not yet been able to take myself and write down all the information I needed to and been able to convey that to the Sikh Coalition. This app will allow me to do that," said Prabhjit Singh, who is not related to Amardeep Singh.

"When I sat down on that airplane, after that experience, I looked around at everybody else ... and I thought, they did not have to go through what I had to go through to get on this airplane," he said.

Pinterest Plagued by More Scams, Fake Android Apps

Social networking site Pinterest's popularity continues to soar, among both image-happy users and money-grubbing scoundrels. Pinterest fans are being spammed with survey scams and tricked into downloading fake Android apps.

Pinterest is the latest social media darling as users post and share photos and videos of things that catch their interest with their friends. The site is also plagued with weight loss and free gift card scams. There are also multiple fake apps on Google Play claiming to be the official Pinterest app for Android. (Pinterest has thus far released only an iPhone app.) These fake apps display ads on the mobile device's notification bar and may have access to the user's browser history and bookmarks, as well as the user's location, according to Gotta Be Mobile [1] .

As Security Watch reported back in March, scammers are taking advantage of the platform's retail-heavy focus to post scams masquerading as free offers from well-known brands such as Starbucks and Coach but really directing users to survey sites. On Pinterest, users are also required to "pin" the original scam and download some kind of software before they can collect their supposed freebie. As users see the offers pinned by their friends, they are more likely to become victims as well.

BitDefender researchers recently identified cross-platform scams acting as a "social network go-between" where Pinterest users are directed to Facebook pages and vice-versa. A recent scam showed an image of Justin Bieber on Pinterest and encouraged users to click through to a Facebook page to see more images. Once at the Facebook page, users are steered towards an endless cycle of survey sites which they had to complete in order to see more scintillating images. In another, scammers took the reverse path, tricking users with a Facebook ad purporting to show them how to make money off Pinterest, but actually dumping users in a "survey maze," according to BitDefender.

"This new scam variant strengthens the umbilical cord that seems to tie together the two major online social networks of the moment," the team wrote on the Malware City blog.

Pinterest Fighting Back
Pinterest acknowledged [2] the spam problem in an Apr. 13 blog post and promised to improve its anti-spam technology. Pinterest encouraged users to report fraudulent pins. The site also currently blocks malicious links.

In the case of a recent wonder diet scam, Pinterest began blocking the links to prevent users from landing on the survey site. However, the profile of the scammer who had posted the weight loss scam remained active, along with "hundreds of other similar" pins that were posted on the profile, in the first place, Graham Cluley, a senior technology consultant at Sophos, noted on the Naked Security [3] blog.

More importantly, users should continue to exercise a healthy dose of skepticism when seeing these supposed great deals from friends.

Social Media Unite Against Spam
Instead of acting as "if each new virtual social playground that springs up is by default safe from the perils its elders have run up against," a more proactive and collaborative approach amongst all the social media platforms "might save all online social actors, old and new alike, a lot of trouble," BitDefender wrote.

These kinds of social engineering gimmicks are not platform-dependent and are spread by tricking users. The types of scams currently bombarding Pinterest users are the same issues that users previously encountered (and still do) on Twitter and Facebook. As PCMag reported last week [4] , Facebook recently announced partnerships with Sophos, Trend Micro, and other security vendors to beef up its link scanning engine to block malicious links posted on its site.
