The Interview is now available on iTunes, as iTunes Connect comes back online

The Interview

The Interview is now available for download or stream from iTunes, after Apple originally chose not to carry the film at the same time as Microsoft, Netflix, and others. [1]

Apple is streaming the controversial film priced the same as others â€" $6 to rent and $15 to own.

Probably without coincidence, The Interview was released the day  iTunes Connect became available again .

The New York Times reported [2]  Sony asked the White House for help in lining up a single technology partner to stream its movie “The Interview” before it released it last week, and it wanted help from none other than Apple’s iTunes.

The Cupertino-based Apple reportedly was not interested, “at least not on a speedy time table,” the New York Times says. Since iTunes Connect became available again on Sunday, assumedly Sony just uploaded the film themselves.

You can check out The Interview on iTunes [3] .

The best Social Networking apps of 2014

Paper

The whole social networking phenomenon has really gotten out of hand. There are so many ways to connect with others that it is nearly impossible to keep track. Luckily for you, we’ve done the tracking so you don’t have to.

Today’s list is for the best social networking apps to come out in 2014. The iDB team scoured the App Store to come up with the cream of the crop and nominated their favorites. Below is the winner of the vote, as well as the runner-ups and, of course, our all time favorite social networking app.

Paper Facebook

This past February, Facebook changed the face of its book by adding an entirely new way to experience the social networking site. More than just a status update tracker, Paper makes it possible for users to keep track of stories that friends and family repost on their feeds. You can also select specific topics to have curated news items to appear on your Paper feed. What really makes this app stand out is how attractive the user interface is. It features magazine-like image and text combinations with articles that unfold before your eyes. You can also view high-resolution photos and watch full screen videos. The gesture-based controls round out the pleasantness. This app is available for fre e [1] .

Swarm

Foursquare is one of the first check-in style social networking services to reach supermodel status. When it started, it was all the rage. But five years later, people are saying, “Foursquare is so five years ago.” Swarm is like a party finder for your mobile device. When you open the app, you’ll be able to see within seconds just how many of your friends are nearby. If you want them to come to you instead, check in and wait for the party to arrive. You can also send messages to your buddies to remind them to bring the drinks. An iOS 8 update that came out in October makes it possible for you to check in and see nearby friends right from your iPhone’s Lock screen. This app is available for free [2] .

Tweetbot 3 iPhone 6

Of course, here at iDB, we have strong opinions about what Twitter client is the best and we’ve decided that Tweetbot takes the crown. The major update to version 3 brought with it some fantastic new features that truly solidified its place in our hearts. With it, you can mute messages from users, sync direct messages, and more. The recent iOS 8 update added extensions for Share Sheet, and more. You can even favorite a tweet and reply without having to unlock your screen. If you browse the Internet with Tweetbot’s built-in browser, 1Password gives you extra security for password management. This app is available for $4.99 [3] .

What is your favorite social networking app of 2014? Let us know in the comments below.

Best iPhone Apps 2014: The Good. The Bold. The Quirky

Apple’s App Store boasts one of the most extensive collections of apps this side of the sun. Inside you can pretty much find anything â€" and we mean anything. But what are the best and, more importantly, which are worth having on your iPhone ? In a bid to locate, download and test the best apps for iPhone in 2014 we’ve been tinkering with applications all year to bring you a list of the best apps in the run up to Christmas. We’ll be adding 10 new applications to this list every week as December 25 approaches.

To keep things tidy we’ve decided not to include the big apps that every man and his dog knows about â€"â€" Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google Mail and the like. Instead, we’re focusing on useful applications that might have slipped under your radar. These apps are all designed to be either informative, useful, fun or quirky â€"â€" you'll find no dross in here. Just solid gold hits all the way through.

So, without further ado, here's our pick of the best.

Stacks 2 - New Age Currency Converter (£1.99) [1]

I know it seems like you may not need ANOTHER currency converter, but Stacks 2 will change your mind. Its killer feature is that it uses iOS 8’s extensions, which allows the app to convert currency not just in the app, but in the Safari web browser on your iOS device. When you are browsing the web and see a currency you want converted simply tap the share button and then select Stack 2’s extension in the share sheet. The currency on the web page will be converted instantly. The app also features two iOS 8 widgets: one is a Quick Converter and the other is for Denominations. There’s also a built-in calculator and historical forex charts.

Timberman (free) [2]

Timberman is a truly addictive game. The premise is simple: you’re a lumberjack that needs to chop down trees. Keep chopping, but avoid the branches as the tree gets shorter and shorter. It sounds simple and easy, but the longer you chop the harder it gets. As you progress you’ll chop trees in four different environments and be able to unlock 20 different characters. If you’re fan of retro arcade games, you’ll love Timberman.

memeTV (free) [3]

I can spend hours viewing meme’s online, which is why this app is probably a dangerous app for me to have. memeTV allows you to browse the best television memes right on your iPhone. Find one you like? Save, favorite or share it with just a few taps. But memeTV goes further. If you find a meme you like but want to make it your own, you can remix it by adding your own text. It works for both still image memes and also GIF meme’s. The app even allows you to trim sections of GIFs to get them to your liking. And if the meme gives you a yearning to watch the TV show it’s based on memeTV offers integration with Hulu, the iTunes Store, and Amazon Instant Video so you can buy it or watch it instantly.

Apple's best iPhone apps of 2014: If you don't own these you should download them immediately

As so it's the end of 2014 and Apple has revealed its traditional top lists for the year, including the apps it believes that every iPhone owner should have on their device.

Members of the iTunes App Store team have chosen their favourites apps and games released in 2014 and awarded them Apple's highest honours. There are plenty of other recommended apps in each category too, so we've detailed them here in the one place for you to discover and download, if you haven't already.

Best iPhone apps of 2014

Winner: Replay Video Editor

A free download supported by in-app purchases, such as the removal of watermarks, Replay Video Editor [1]  is a powerful yet simple video editing tool that enables users to mash together music, text, photos and video to make clips in seconds. These can then be uploaded to social networks, including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Instagram.

Runner-up: Peak - Brain Training

Self-improvement app Peak - Brain Training [2]  has puzzle challenges and brain workouts that help you train your memory, focus, problem solving, mental agility and language skills. It is designed to be used daily and keeps a score on how you've progressed through your goals. It's completely free to use, but you can purchase a Pro Training account subscription for greater access.

Best iPhone games of 2014

Winner: Threes

Cunningly simple but beautifully designed, Threes [3]  is one of those apps that you can lose hours to. It is, in essence, a simple puzzle game where you have to continue to multiply your way to a maximum score through the three-times table, but manoeuvring the puzzle grid around to get the best result is not as easy as it sounds. It might sound expensive at £1.99, but that's money well spent.

Runner-up: Leo's Fortune

Leo's Fortune [4]  is a beautiful platformer that, at £2.99, is decent value for a lot of adventuring fun. The moustachioed ball of fluff that is the main hero is a cute lead character and the hand-drawn backgrounds are gorgeous.

Also recommended

Apple also revealed that Minecraft - Pocket Edition [5]  was its most downloaded paid app of 2014 - impressive as it's rarely dipped from its £4.99 cover price. Facebook's Messenger [6]  app was the most downloaded free application.

iOS 8 Takes Up Too Much Storage, New Class Action Suit Says

A new class action lawsuit against Apple claims that iOS 8 consumes too much storage on Apple devices. The suit was recently filed in a federal court in Northern California, Silicon Beat said recently, and the plaintiffs believe Apple purposefully increased the size of iOS 8 so that it consumed too much space on entry-level iPhones and iPads and forced folks to pay for iCloud storage.

iOS 8 was such a large download that there were plenty of “ how to ” articles walking consumers through the steps to free up enough space to install the update, so you can see where the plaintiffs have some sort of an argument. “We feel that there are a substantial number of Apple consumers that have been shortchanged, and we’ll be pursuing claims vigorously,” one lawyer working on the case told Silicon Beat.

The lawsuit says Apple is purposefully using “sharp business tactics” to trick people into believing their iPhone has more capacity than it really does. Then, Apple will turn around and sell iCloud storage “in a desperate moment, when a consumer is trying to record or take photos at a child or grandchild’s recital, basketball game or wedding,” the suit says.

Apple provides 5GB of free iCloud space, but the suit seems to be more focused on limited local storage, and notes that iOS 8 consumes up to 18.1 percent of the available hard drive space on an iPhone 5s. Apple has not publicly responded to the lawsuit yet but, in its defense, this is also an industry wide problem that affects plenty of phones.

New Year 2015 countdown and fireworks apps – Free » Phone Reviews

Now that Christmas is sadly over we’re fast approaching the end of 2014 and many of us are getting ready for New Year’s Eve celebrations. Countdown apps for mobile devices can be great fun and you can even see fireworks displays on your smartphones and tablets. We’ve rounded up some of the best free New Year 2015 countdown and fireworks apps for both Android and iOS devices.

Simply hit any of the title links to be taken directly to Google Play or the App Store for further information or to download any of these apps. Our first choice is for Android devices and is simply called New Year Countdown. [1] This will show a countdown to New Year 2015 showing how much time is left with a live wallpaper. If you can’t be together with all of your loved ones, if you all use this app you can be sure that you cheer together as the New Year arrives.

Another good choice would be New Year Countdown Widget, [2] also for Android. Countdown the days, hours, minutes and seconds to saying Happy New Year with this app, which features 4×1 widget, full landscape supports, different units to measure your countdown, and even music. You can choose from default images or use your own photos as the background.

Our final Android pick is New Years Fireworks. [3] This is a highly rated app for enjoying fireworks on your device as live wallpapers. It can also be set for other favorite holidays such as Independence Day or 4th of July. Users can set the amount of fireworks, colors and sounds and then sit back and enjoy the show. You can also change the background color by simply tapping the screen.

New Year apps b

Now we’re moving on to New Year iOS apps for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Our first suggestion is New Year Countdown 2015 Free, [4] and it’s pretty hard to say too much about this as it simply does what it says on the tin, counts down to the New Year! As well as days, hours, minutes and seconds, you can also opt to have the countdown only in seconds. This can be used every year with updates from the App Store.

Another iOS app we like is called New Year Countdown!! [5] This app can also show the countdown in heartbeats, and users can drag the countdown display to wherever they want it. It features 5 free filters for background photos, and you can flip through background photos during the countdown. You can also use your own photos including those from Instagram and Facebook for this app, or add your own favorite song. It has customizable font types, colors, and backgrounds, and reminders for your events, and it works in portrait or landscape modes.

Our final choice of all is another iOS app titled Fireworks! Arcade. [6] This app is for New Year and July 4th fireworks and offers a simple to use experience. As long as you keep tapping the display of your device the fireworks will keep on coming, lighting up the sky. Users can also swipe the screen to spin the sky, just as though you were spinning around under the night sky yourself. If you’d rather be still then just set the camera lock to on, and you also have the option of switching from evening to night.

We hope you enjoy our selection of 2015 New Year Apps for iPhone, iPad and Android devices, and find that at least one of them is just the one you were looking for. Remember that these are all free apps, so it’s worth trying them out. All that remains for us to say is Happy New Year from all the team at Phones Review!

Apple Inc.'s (NASDAQ:AAPL) Free "App Of The Week" – Brushstroke

Every week, Apple ( NASDAQ:AAPL ) selects a paid app from the iOS AppStore and brings it to users for free as part of its "App of the Week" feature.

Some great paid apps have been previously featured as the App of the Week, and we can’t deny the joy associated with downloading a paid app for free.

Free app of the day promotions usually include struggling apps that users are not downloading on their own, but Apple’s official App of the Week promotion is quite different in that aspect.

The editors at the App Store hand-pick the app they wish to make available for free download, and so far we have been quite impressed with the quality of the free offerings.

This week, users can navigate to the App Store on their iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch and in the "Features" section, scroll down and select "App of the Week." Then they can simply tap “Get” and download the app as they normally would.

This week’s App of the Week is Brushstroke by Code Organa, a masterfully created app that can convert your iPhone or iPad photos into paintings with a single touch.

The app features a cutting edge design that works seamlessly with iOS 8 and the iPhone 6’s display. We took the app for a test drive and found it to be a smooth and efficient experience.

The app can help users create their own painting masterpieces by allowing them to select from a number of detailed filters and effects that transform a photo to appear in various painting styles and techniques.

10 new tweaks released this week

Cydia Home iPhone 6

The song says “it’s the most wonderful time of the year.” It is indeed, unless you’re expecting tons of apps and tweaks to be released, in which case, you’ll be sorely disappointed. This past week was pretty slow in terms of new tweaks, but it made up the low quantity by great quality. Among the notable tweak releases of the week, we’ll definitely note Ignition and Auxo 3, two highly anticipated tweaks that will sure make their marks on your devices.

2TapShot: double tap the screen when a video is playing to take a screenshot (free)

AboutMore: offers more device information in the Settings app (free)

Auxo 3: a very different take on the App Switcher ($0.99/$2.99 â€" review )

Betterrotate iPad: makes the icon grid the same in all orientations on iPad (free)

CameraTweak 3: brings several enhancements to the stock Camera app ($1.49 â€" review )

DoubleTapToSleep: double tap the Home or Lock screens to put the device to sleep (free)

Ignition: brings CarPlay to your iPhone or iPad (free â€" review )

nupsidedown: prevents iPhone 6 Plus UI from rotating upside down (free)

QuickShoot Pro iOS 8: capture photos and videos directly from the Home screen ($1.49)

Taker: take picture from anywhere using the Volume buttons (free)

Apple not running free 12 Days of Christmas promotion this year

12 days 1

For the last six years Apple has been running its “12 Days of Christmas” promotion in the UK, and did so last year in both the UK and US “12 Days of Gifts”. It joyed customers by giving away iOS apps, music, films and books over the twelve days following Christmas Day. However as noticed first [1] by MacWorld, it appears Apple is discontinuing its holiday tradition in 2014/2015.

We’re now three days out of Christmas, and any type of promotion can’t be found. MacWorld reports from a reliable source that we’re definitely not seeing the “12 Days of Christmas” app this year.

There are several reasons why Apple could be discontinuing the tradition.

For one, there are just so many free apps on the App Store right now. App developers have realized the benefit of making their apps free, and then allowing in-app purchases to garner revenue. Two, Apple recently changed the language on its App Store from “free” to “get”. Three, customers weren’t too happy with the U2 album giveaway.

MacWorld also offers the theory that new retail head Angela Ahrendts is behind the discontinuation of the giveaway. Apple also chose not to discount any Macs, iPads or iPhones for Black Friday, which she may have had a part in.

The 12 Days of Christmas promotion in 2013/2014 offered the Home Alone movie, a live Justin Timberlake track, The Ice Princess Book, Rayman Jungle Run, and more, for free.

Luckily, Apple isn’t discontinuing all traditions this year. It announced earlier this week it will still be doing its “Lucky Bags” promotion in Japan.

How to Manage Notifications on iPhone and iPad

Android users have been a spoiled bunch when it comes to device notifications. iPhone and iPad users had to wait until 2011 to see a notification center appear on their devices. It works pretty well though it handles things much differently than its Google counterpart.

We’ve spent quite a bit of time lately discussing notifications, specifically managing them on Android 5 Lollipop , and also how to tame Facebook’s myriad ways of interrupting you . Let’s turn our attention now to iOS and show you how notifications work on those devices. Like we said, the iOS notification center is still somewhat new, but it’s fairly mature and easy to use.

The Notification Center

The Notification Center [1] can be accessed by swiping downward from the top edge of your iPhone or iPad, and then swiping left. Any apps allowed to push notifications to your device will be displayed here.

If you want to clear a group of notifications, tap the “X” in the upper-right corner. If you want to clear a specific notification, press and swipe left and an “X” will appear next to it.

Easy enough, but how do you configure apps to even show (or hide) notifications in the first place? That’s also easy. For one, usually when you install an app on your iPhone or iPad, it will ask you if you want to allow it to display notifications on your device. You don’t have to put a lot of thought into this because you can always go into the system settings and change it.

Notifications Settings on iOS

Open the settings and tap “Notifications” to see your apps list. First off, check out the sorting options. You can sort them by the time they arrive, or by how you want them to appear. To do this, tap “Edit” in the upper-right corner and you can drag your apps around so their notifications appear in the order you prefer.

Tap on an app to adjust its individual settings. We’ll show you what Messages looks like because it’s a rather extensive example of what you might find.

At the top is the most important setting of all: Allow Notifications, so if you want to disable or enable them, here’s where you do that. Beyond this, you have the option to decide how many notifications can appear in the Notification Center (from none to twenty). You may also be able to choose a notification sound (or simply turn the sound on or off), as well as whether or not this particular app can appear on the Lock Screen.

If you have the Badge App Icon setting enabled, it means that if an app wants to alert you to unread e-mails or messages, it will typically show an unread counter (badge) on its app icon, as seen here with Hangouts.

If we scroll down further, there are options for choosing how notifications appear as they happen. This means that if you’re using another app on your device, and for example, someone sends you a message or an e-mail arrives. You can decide whether you see that notification as a banner, an alert, or not at all.

Banners appear at the top of your screen and disappear automatically while alerts appear in the middle of your screen, and must be acted upon before they go away.

Scrolling down further, we see even more options. These are specific to Messages, but you’ll also see a similar set of choices in Photos and Game Center, among others.

Some apps, such as the native Apple Calendar may allow you to adjust notifications by categories. You see, each calendar notification group â€" upcoming events, invitations, invitee responses, and changes â€" has its own set of notifications you can configure, which will be very much like those we’ve already described.

Basically, that is the long and short of dealing with notifications on iOS. The nice thing about it is how much say you have over whether an app can display notifications, how they display them, and so on. So, now if you’re getting badgered by one particular app, or you’re missing out on important messages from another, you know exactly how to fix it.

Let’s turn things over to you now. Got an opinion you’d like to share with us, or a burning question you want to ask? Our discussion forum is open and we welcome your feedback.
