Vimeo (for iPad) Review & Rating

Vimeo, one of the most popular YouTube alternatives on the Web, comes to iOS devices as a universal iPhone and iPad app. Available for download free of charge from the iTunes App Store, Vimeo lets users browse video by category, view video, and even edit an upload video on the iPad. When the Vimeo works, it works well, but frequent crashing mean that that you may want to hold off on downloading this app until it's patched.

Look and Feel
Vimeo's webpage features bright, cheery colors, but the Vimeo app's interface carries a decidedly darker charcoal-gray tone. It's not better or worse, just different. It's divided into two sections: a main content area where you can browse and view video, as well as mark clips as favorites and tag those that you would like to view at a later time. There's a column left of this area that lets you upload video, edit video, view your video's stats (plays, embeds, likes, etc.), and access a help menu should you run into any difficulty.

Browsing and Viewing Video
The home screen, by default, showcases featured Vimeo videos. A horizontal strip lets you scroll through the various categories, which include Vimeo Staff Picks, The Vimeo HD Channel, Everything Animated, Music Videos, World HD, Inspirational, Snake DVST, Slowmotion & Timelines, and Designcollector TV. You can either browse within the individual categories, or use the search box to find content. You shouldn't, however, expect to find the same clips you'd find on YouTube. Google's video repository has legal content from record labels and movie and TV studios; Vimeo focuses on indie efforts.

You can log into Vimeo using previously created credentials, or create an account from within the appâ€"a nice touch. A logged in user can save clips to the Watch Later list. Vimeo also features numerous sharing options including Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, WordPress, email, and SMS. Users can also "Like" videos, and view and leave comments.

The Highs and Lows of Video Editing
Unfortunately, you must activate Vimeo's location-based service options from within settings in order to import stills or videos, which is sure to miff those who prefer to not to reveal their whereabouts. I dove in with excitement because video editing isn't a feature that the iPad YouTube app offers.

I cobbled together a slideshow from my photos, added a few transitions, and a title. I was happy to see that I could add audio tracks to my creations, but I couldn't apply any of those that lived on my iPad itself; I'm sure this is in place to prevent copyright infringement (you also can't add video you've purchased from iTunes). Instead, Vimeo let me download music from the Vimeo Music Store. I downloaded Plushgoolash's "Big Gay Water Fight," imported it into my project, adjusted its volume and hit the play button. You also have the option to live record audio.

That's when the problems began. The app randomly crashed during various points in the creation process. It was incredibly frustrating, because I lost my work several times. When I finally got around to finishing my clip, I encountered another problemâ€"saving. There's no obvious save button; instead you have to tap "X," which one might think would simply close the project without saving it. But, alas, it saved and closed, bringing me to a screen where I saw an icon of my creation. I couldn't, however, play or upload the clip because Vimeo continually prompted me to "add some clips to the project," as the app saw it as empty because it lacked video files. Frustrating. I started over, this time working with a few home video clipsand this time Vimeo accepted my completed file.

Users with free accounts can upload 500MB of data per week. If you need more, Vimeo is happy to offer unlimited video uploads if you're willing to part with $9.95 per month or $59.95 per year.

Should You Download Vimeo (for iPad)?
Whether this app is for you depends on your video needs. Vimeo lacks the mainstream music videos, TV shows, and movies you can watch on YouTube, but what you get in exchange is a very capable video editor that's unfortunately hindered by frequent crashes. A rerelease with bug fixes would serve this app well. For now, Vimeo is a feature-rich video app that only the crash-patient will appreciate.

MLB At Bat Goes Live for 2012 With Improved Pricing Scheme

Baseball season is almost upon us and with that comes the latest edition of Major League Baseball’s At Bat app [1] , which went live this morning. The app provides baseball fans with access to live game radio and television broadcasts, MLB GameDay play-by-play service, and more.

Of course, all this isn’t free. There are several service options depending mostly on if users wish to have streaming television broadcasts or are content with radio. The app itself, a universal app designed for both the iPhone and iPad, is a free download. On its own, it offers free league-wide scoreboards and limited access to news content from Major League Baseball.

There are two main service levels, with the high-end MLB.tv Premium offering everything: live home-and-away television broadcasts for “out-of-market” games (that is, users can’t watch their local team’s television coverage); live game home-and-away radio broadcasts; GameDay play-by-play coverage; in-game highlights; box scores; and many, many statistics.

MLB.tv Premium can be purchased for $124.99/season or $24.99/month from the MLB.tv website [2] . The MLB.tv login can then be used to completely unlock the iOS app, and it also allows games to be watched from the Mac or Apple TV.

New for this year is an additional MLB.tv Premium purchase option: a $24.99/month in-app subscription that gives all the same access as buying through the MLB website, but with the convenience of charging the service to an iTunes account. Across the whole length of the season, the $24.99/month charge will be more expensive than the full season charge of $124.99, but it is nice to have the option.

Also available is an in-app purchase for $14.99/season or $2.99/month that offers the same radio broadcasts and GameDay features as the full MLB.tv Premium package, but without the television broadcasts. Subscribers to this package do get one free featured television broadcast per day, as well as “live look-ins” to games when significant events happen.

Last year, MLB.tv Premium users were required to pay the $124.99/season fee, as well as buying separate iPhone and iPad apps for $14.99 each. This year, subscribers with iOS devices will save $30 by having the apps unlock automatically with a login. Additionally, MLB.tv Premium users will get access to out-of-market game broadcasts on the Apple TV. MLB tells MacRumors that the Apple TV is receiving an updated interface for 2012 as well.

Finally, MLB told us about a new “At The Ballpark” app coming on Opening Day 2012. The app will expand on the features offered in the At Bat app last year and will offer maps to concession stands, emergency exits and more at ballparks, as well as a geolocated check-in service. Individual clubs can offer seat upgrades, special offers and food discounts to app users. Some clubs even offer mobile food ordering from the app, and can deliver food right to your seat.

MLB At Bat [3] is a free universal download from the App Store for iPhone and iPad. [Direct Link [4] ]

Camera Awesome for iPhone first impressions review

There are few apps that could pull me away from Galaxy Nexus , the current Google phone, to iPhone 4S . But SmugMug's Camera Awesome [1] is close. Real close. If you're an iPhone shutterbug, this app is for you -- or so I believe after a brief test late today.

Photo buffs can find no shortage of apps for iPhone. But Camera Awesome literally lives up to its name, improving the photo-taking process -- not just enhancing images later. The app provides tools for easing image composition, adding effects before or after taking the pic and automatically post-processing your work -- what SmugMug calls "Awesomizing".

I got email about the new app this morning during the Windows 8 Consumer Preview hoopla, when there wasn't time to leave my chair to pee, let alone try something new. Oh, but I wanted to.

SmugMug [2] is a true testament that the Google-free economy hasn't ruined all the Internet. SmugMug is a family-run photo sharing site that charges for its services and is profitable doing so. It's no free ride. The photo services, which cater more to pros, are exceptional, too. What's that axion? You get what you pay for.

This is not a full review of Camera Awesome, since I simply couldn't spend enough time using the app today, but more of a first impression --and, whoa, is it good. If you're looking for a thorough review, I suggest Katherine Boehret's over at All Things Digital [3] , which I deliberately didn't read before conducting and writing about my quick test.

One Helluva Kit

Camera Awesome is free from Apple's App Store, although SmugMug charges for some extras, as I learned when trying to choose a filter before taking a photo. The app isn't for post-processing pics taken using iPhone's camera feature. Rather you take photos from within Camera Awesome instead.

There are so many useful tools, some people might be overwhelmed at first. But they are pleasingly presented in an uncluttered user interface that hides features behind drop-down or pop-up menus. Camera Awesome distinguishes itself right away by letting the photographer set exposure point as well as focal point. In my test photo below, I misunderstood and set the exposure where I wanted the focus, so the kitty's collar is sharp but not his face.

Other useful tools surprised me. There are four for composing photos, such as leveling the horizon or following the rule of thirds. I was simply stunned to see a composition option for following the Golden Ratio [4] , which is one of the best means of composing really good photos. If this app provided nothing more than these great composition tools, I'd rate it a keeper.

Other options include image stabilization and two burst modes, with SmugMug claiming capability to shoot 9 images in quick succession.

To the Cloud

I used the SmugMug app to "Awesomize" the photo above, but I could have done much more. Camera Awesome presents some nifty effects that can be applied when taking a photo or afterwards. SmugMug provides some for free, but others require in-app purchases. I found this out when trying to apply automatic post-processing presets, which cost 99 cents for nine of them -- they're a bargain. Other goodies include filters, textures and frames, among others.

To my surprise, images aren't stored in iPhone's Camera Roll by default, although there is option to do this. That's because SmugMug looks to the cloud instead. However, cloud archive also is turned off by default. For people with SmugMug accounts, which cost from $40 to $150 a year, Camera Awesome will archive photos online. But there are options to post -- that is share -- to other services: Facebook, Flickr, Picasa, Photobucket, SmugMug, Twitter and YouTube.

"YouTube?" you ask. Camera Awesome is also video awesome, offering a surprising feature. The big problem with phone video is timing. You see something to shoot, fumble with the video app and the moment is gone. You miss the shot. Camera Awesome captures 5 seconds of video before you even hit record. Well, that's what SmugMug claims. In three sample videos of a digital clock, I didn't see the promised "video time travel" benefit.

Something else: Those cool composition tools and photo effects are available for video, too. But I simply didn't have time to amply test them.

Aspiringly Awesome

Presentation is everything in photography, and same should be said of promoting photo apps. Now this is marketing. From the Camera Awesome product page:

awesomize [ˈô-səm-īz]
verb
To trick your friends into thinking you’re a famous photographer.

How's that for aspirational? Good products make you feel better about yourself, or in this case photos you take.

Well, that's if you've got iPhone. Don't expect to see Camera Awesome on Android or Windows Phone anytime soon. The SmugMug Family loves their Macs and other Apple products. This passion translates to the apps, which favor Apple platforms. Still, SmugMug supports Android, but finds coding for the platform problematic.

SmugMug CEO Don MacAskill tweeted [5] this morning about Camera Awesome: "On Android: It's coming. It's hard. Hardware fragmentation up the wazoo. Insane memory limitations. Ugh. But I want it! So building it!"

For now, Camera Awesome is available from Apple's App Store [6] . The app requires iOS 4.3 or later and supports iPad, iPhone and iPod touch but is not a native iPad app.
