Not too long ago, it was illegal to unlock your cellphone. Now, with a lot of hard work, petitions, and making the circuitous route through “the system,†the President of the United States will sign into law legally unlocking your phone.
Officially announced through the White House on August 1, 2014, the President of the United States will sign into law the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act. With it, consumers will be able to unlock their devices without having to go with any of the hassle that has commonly plagued those who have tried, especially through some carriers. From the announcement:
“The most important part of this joint effort is that it will have a real impact. As long as their phone is compatible and they have complied with their contracts, consumers will now be able to enjoy the freedom of taking their mobile service â€" and a phone they already own â€" to the carrier that best fits their needs.“
The cellphone unlocking bill has made its way through the Senate with unanimous support , and most recently passed through the House of Representatives without issue . There’s been help for the bill on both sides of the aisle, including regional United States wireless carriers , so it was never much of a doubt that the President would sign it into law. Even support for “bulk unlockers†managed to get included in the bill.
