The IPhone 5 Still Has Competition

by Bryan McLoone Syracuse (NCC NEWS)- With the IPhone 5 being released last Friday, it can be easy to forget about other smartphones that are available.  But even with the hysteria over the newest Apple product, local businesses are finding ways to still promote other smartphones to customers.

And there is one smartphone that is being compared closely with the IPhone.  Android phones are a popular smartphone and is a suitable alternative for consumers.

What to like about the Android

of a selection to customers.  Taylor tells customers if they buy a non-Apple smartphone, they can leave with their new phone that day.  A guarantee he cannot make about the newest IPhone.

Taylor said that Android’s are not far behind the IPhone in quality.

“Android has done a lot to catch up to the technology greatness of the IPhone,” Taylor said.

At the Verizon Wireless store on Marshall Street, store manager Tim O’Connor said he

sells the customer a phone depending on what they are looking for.  And even with O’Connor saying 75% of his smartphone sales at this location near Syracuse University are IPhones, he thinks Android’s fulfill specific needs to phone users.

“You can download over 20,000 free applications of music…A lot of people like the bigger screens,” O’Connor said.

Android Vs. IPhone

So comparing Android to the IPhone, how have the sales been?  A Nielson report [1] in January of 2012 said of all the smartphone sales in the U.S., 47% are Android.  IPhone was around 30%

The report did say that about half of the phone users in the United States are using smartphones.  And with the new IPhone 5 out, Apple might be able to close the gap on Androids.
