A free iPhone app [1] has been launched featuring all the information people need to enjoy the Olympic cycling events in Surrey this summer.
The app acts as a digital spectator guide showing the routes of the Olympic road race and time trial events, as well as the locations of ‘live sites’ where there will be big screens showing the races, stalls and other activities.
The app also supports local businesses by telling people about places to eat and drink and visitor attractions. Other information ranges from the locations of train stations and where to find a toilet.
There is also a live link to the @gosurreylive [2] Twitter feed that will provide live race commentary as well as essential information about road closures and re-openings.

Helyn Clack, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services and the 2012 Games, said: “Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to watch the Olympic cycling events in Surrey. This app will help them enjoy themselves, direct visitors to local businesses and provide important information about getting around.
“I’d urge local people as well as visitors to download it for free and visit our website gosurrey.info. Inevitably staging sporting events of this scale will cause disruption, so the more information people have at their fingertips about what is going on the better.â€
The men’s and women’s Olympic cycling road races will take place on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 July. The time trials will be staged on Wednesday 1 August.
Preparations have been going on for more than two years to ensure the Games in Surrey are a success.
Extensive road closures and parking restrictions will be in place around the cycle routes from the early hours of the morning on event days, so residents are being urged to be prepared and to plan ahead. The aim is to reopen most roads three hours after the last race support vehicle passes. It’s expected to take longer in areas where larger crowds are expected such as around Dorking Town Centre, Hampton Court, Leatherhead Town Centre and Box Hill.
With hundreds of thousands of people expected to watch the Olympic events in Surrey, getting around will be difficult. People are advised to stay close to their local areas and walk. Even after the events finish, the county’s roads and public transport will be very busy as people make their way home.
