As far as tower defense games go, there are a ton of ‘em in the iTunes app store for your iPhone or iPod Touch. Some are great, some are good, and like all genres that flood the app store after a breakthrough game, others are not worth the time it takes to download them.
Epic War falls somewhere in the middle. That is good, but not among the best. For starters, it seems much more like an overly complicated version of a classic fixed path game. It’s basic in that you have the typical mob of enemies, and money exchanged for kills, but it gets a little fancy after that. Too much so, for my tastes.
The oddest (and perhaps most difficult) thing to fully capture with Epic War is the enemy resistance tree. You tap a button that looks like a target, there’s a giant overlay with your enemies and their resistance to the towers. Each unit takes damage a bit differently instead of giving each one a set amount of damage to deal with. This means you have to be choose with what you build and upgrade between each set of enemies. It’s not all that easy to tell the different groups of enemies apart, and it can be extremely frustrating to map out a plan. The enemy resistance is strong, but the way it’s implemented could use some polishing up, which in turn would make it a much more put together game. It’s all in the details.
It’s also pretty difficult, which is great if that’s what you’re looking for, but it can be frustrating. Like a lot of these types of games, you start with a set number of units to get through and once you’re out, you’re out. There are four levels, but they are so challenging it makes you wonder if you are set up for failure from the beginning. I like a good challenge, but if I continuously play over and over without ever thinking I’m close, I’m probably eventually going to give up for good. A great game is challenging, but not impossible. There are parts of this one that seem downright impossible no matter what you do, so be forewarned if you’re the type that often wants to throw their phone at the wall at a hint of difficulty.
I will recommend this game, but with caution. There are definitely worse games in the genre out there, and I’m not sure that is good or bad for Epic War. On one hand, if the really bad ones were eliminated this one would not measure up, but on the other, it has the potential to be a good game, it’s just going to take a lot of work. The challenge level is a good start. It’s almost as if some game developers make games so challenging in the hopes that players will play forever on a few levels instead of racing through a bunch of easy ones only to be done. That tactic can and does backfire when you just don’t want to continue any longer because it’s just too agonizing, which this one most definitely can be.
