I didn’t think I was going to like Dark Nebula when I first started playing it to be honest, but I have to say, I was wrong.
The reason I thought I wouldn’t like it is because of the controls, but this is actually my favorite thing about it. In Dark Nebula, the point is to guide a small ball through a bunch of different mazes in order to reach the end. To do this, you use the iPhones tilted screen, which when it first came out seemed pretty amazing and now is just standard for a lot of games.
The reason I didn’t think I would like it is because you have to tilt it forward making it so that you have to watch your ball roll through the maze at an angle. This is a little annoying for sure, but the controls are amazingly accurate, with no lagging whatsoever.
You’re basically rolling this ball through a each maze, trying to collect various shields to defend yourself from all the different obstacles you’ll encounter. The graphics are dark and kind of dreary, but really great, and the tilting controls are really accurate. On some games like this you can change the settings to make the tilting controls more sensitive, but in this one you don’t need to, as they work perfectly.
You’ll pick up shields, run into spikes and have to balance on ledges above fireballs. You’ll encounter lasers and more challenges along the way.
The one problem I have found? It’s a short game, which if it’s free (it was when I downloaded it), that’s not too bad, but I’d be pretty upset if I paid for it, it’s that short. Note to developers: I know you want to get your game out there right away, but give people something, especially if you’re asking for money in return. Yeah, I know they’ll probably do updates, but by that time I will probably have moved on to some other game that’s not annoyingly short. That’s the way this works. We don’t have long attention spans anymore, sad to say. If you want us to play it, give it to us now.
Overall, I’ll say this game is worth the download if you’re lucky enough to get it for free, because it really is a great game. It’s got some of the best tilt screen controls I have seen, it’s addictive and fairly challenging (although it seems super easy in the beginning), and it’s fun. If you check it out and there’s a price tag however, I would stop and ask yourself how upset you’ll be when you’re finished with it in an hour. Or less. Because that’s how much time it will probably take the average user to get through it, and once you do, you’ll more than likely never venture to play again.
