iOS 6.1 gains 22% adoption in under 2 days

ios 6.1

Apple’s recent update to iOS 6.1 may be important more for what it says about users and the never-ending competition with Android than what new features were added to the software running iPhones, iPods and and iPads. Released earlier this week, iOS 6.1 could become the most-quickly adopted version of Apple’s mobile software. Nearly 22 percent of iOS users have installed the update in less than 48 hours, one developer claims.

Apple’s iPhone users were the fastest to adopt iOS 6.1 with nearly 24 percent installing the updated software in less than one day. Tablet users were only a bit slower with one-fifth of iPad owners installing 6.1 by the 20-hour mark. By comparison, it took a week for 44 percent of users to update to iOS 6…

According to TechCrunch, “iOS 6.1 is growing at a faster rate, and looks to be on track to top that should its momentum continue.” [1]

The adoption figures come from the developer of OnSwipe, a service which presents traditional websites in a format better suited to touchscreen devices.

After polling its more than 13 million iOS users, Onswipe CEO Jason Baptiste told Darrell Etherington Wednesday that the record-setting adoption pace could be due to over-the-air updates, an iOS technology less than a year old.

iOS 6.1 adoption (TechCrunch, OnSwipe)

By eliminating the need to plug your iOS device into a wall, OTA makes updating to the newest version of Apple’s OS as simple as touching the screen. In the iOS versus Android wars, the prize for faster OS adoption is more developers . More developers, of course, means more apps, increased buzz and in the end more customers.

The news that iOS 6.1 has already spread to nearly a quarter of Apple’s iOS users means developers working on the latest app don’t have to wonder about users still operating with iOS 6 or even earlier.

Etherington explains:

They can create experiences that will be the same for a larger number of customers at once, without having to take into account different software versions with idiosyncratic quirks.

Where is Android in adoption rates?

According to Google’s own numbers [2] , just ten percent of Android users have adopted Jelly Bean software, released in July 2012. Meanwhile, 300 million Apple devices out of the 500 million in the wild have upgraded to iOS 6 or above in just five months, enough for a 60 percent adoption rate .

Openness doesn’t always win…

Twelve South’s New SurfacePad Gives Your iPhone A Smart Cover

Twelve South announced a new iPhone accessory today, one that probably looks familiar if you’re aware of Apple’s Smart Cover and Smart Case products. The SurfacePad for iPhone [1] is a sheath of Napa leather that wraps around your phone and provides basic level protection while adding a minimum amount of weight and thickness.

The company is clearly selling this as a fashion accessory, given the way they’re marketing it. It’s a nice looking addition anyway, and the thin cover should protect both front and back from scratches and scrapes, something that the iPhone 5 could use. It adds only 1.77 mm to your device’s thickness, and sticks onto the iPhone with a residue-free adhesive to make sure it isn’t going anywhere once applied. The front cover also folds back and doubles as a stand, hence its resemblance to Apple’s Smart covers and cases for iPad.

The SurfacePad comes in black, white and red, and is available for both iPhone 4/4s and iPhone 5 form factors. It’s less bulky than most folio type cases, if that’s your thing, and it retails for $34.99, which hardly breaks the bank, especially for a genuine leather case. It’s available to order now from TwelveSouth.com [2] .

Temple Run 2 hits 50M downloads in under two weeks

Temple Run 2 for iOS (iPhone screenshot 002)

After announcing last week that its new title, Temple Run 2, saw 20 million downloads in its first 4 days, Imangi Studios is back today with news of another record-breaking milestone.

Today, they announced that the sequel to the popular endless-runner game has been downloaded more than 50 million times on iOS, Android and Kindle devices in less than 2 weeks… [1]

That surpasses the record previously held by Rovio and Angry Birds Space for the fastest growing mobile game, set back in April of last year when it hit 50 million downloads in 35 days.

“Imangi Studios today announced that Temple Run 2 has been downloaded over 50 million times on iOS, Android and Kindle devices. Reaching the milestone in 13 days breaks the previously set record for the fastest growing mobile game*. Temple Run 2 originally launched exclusively on the App Store on January 17 and quickly rose to the #1 slot in Free Apps, earning over six million downloads in less than 24 hours.”

Co-founder of Imangi Keith Shepherd admits that “Temple Run has evolved into something much bigger” than their tiny studio, which consists of just Keith, his wife and a full-time artist.

And he’s right about that. Temple Run is quickly going the way of Angry Birds, expanding into apparel, digital comics, and card and board games, among other licensing partnerships.

If you haven’t tried Temple Run 2 yet, you can download here [2] . There has to be a reason why it’s creating such a buzz, so it’s at least worth checking out. It’s currently #2 in the Top Free apps list.
