The Week's Best Android, iPhone, iPad, and Windows Phone Apps

You all better have enjoyed yesterday folks, it was the last Bank Holiday we're going to have until Christmas. Crazy that isn't it? Shame the weather was pretty rubbish, so we missed on that final BBQ of the summer. No one last hurrah before children head back to school, along with autumn rolling in to make the weather terrible and the street slick with dead leaves. Isn't weather grand?

But hey, let's get down to business. Here's this week's collection of the best apps for your phone and tablet.

iPhone Apps

VoucherCodes.co.uk: [1]  We all love to save money, but we're not always at our computers scouring the web for the best deals. How do you know what offers are available in your local area? VoucherCodes.co.uk helps you discover deals and offers around you and across the rest of the UK. There's not much else to it, but who doesn't love saving money? [Free]

CitiesTalking Guide: [2]  You know how museums have audio tours that let tell you all the stuff you need to know about the exhibits? Why can't we have that for real life? Oh, well it looks like we do now. CitiesTalking Guide is just that, telling you all the cool things you need to know about about various European cities by tracking you with GPS and playing the relevant sections automatically. Best of all, it's all kept offline so you can use it without using up your data or accruing data charges abroad. [Free -- with in-app purchases]

Wondr: [3]  Say you follow a bunch of people and Twitter, and you want to talk to them in a way that's a little bit more private than the social network. Where do you go? Wondr, that's where. It's a service for letting you start up anonymous conversations with the people you follow on any topic you feel like. [Free]

Rescover: [4]  Are you looking forward to the release of something, but can never remember when it is? Or do you just not want to spend too much time researching? That's where Rescover comes in. It's a one-stop place to let you know when you'll be able to find out the release date of films, games, music, TV shows, and more. No more prattling around with Wikipedia and Google anymore. [Free]

Rizon: [5]  Anyone who knows anything about photography will have heard of the 'golden hour', the time of day around dusk and dawn that makes it easier to take great photos. But how do you know when it is? Rizon helps you plan your photos in advance, by telling you when the golden hour is -- regardless of where you are. There's even a reminder function so you don't miss it. [£1.49]

iPad Apps

YouTube Gaming: [6]  Google's l ong-awaited twitch rival is here, and the app is available for you to download onto your iPad right now. It's here to deliver you great video gaming videos, including live streams, let's plays, reviews, trailers, speed-runs, and more. It's just like YouTube, just, you know, for gaming content. [Free]

Dispatch: [7]  This one is one of the many apps that's designed to help you deal with your emails. Dispatch saves the replies you use regularly as 'snippets' so you don't have to keep typing them out, it integrates with a bunch of other apps to make organising your life easier, and you have four seconds to undo something stupid you just did (but sadly that doesn't include sent emails). It's now arrived on the iPad, for your convenience. [£4.99]

Workflow: [8]  Workflow is a wondrous app that lets you create your own 'apps' that automate a bunch of different things you can do in iOS. There's now a brand new widget which lets you carry out your workflows from your notification centre, cross device syncing, and 11 brand new actions for you ro fix up for yourself. [£3.99]

Portal: [9]  Pushbullet is a fantastic app, and Portal is its latest service that lets you send files between devices via Wi-Fi (without going anywhere near the Pushbullet servers). It's been out on Android for a while, and now it's finally hit iOS. Th at means you can quickly transfer files and photos using a handy little drag-and-drop system. [Free]

Vegourmet: [10]  So you're vegan. You don't eat food that was, or came from an animal. You can't, or won't, eat a bunch of the food that most other people eat, so you might want a way to find great tasting vegan food and recipes. That's where Vegourmet comes in, it's a Swedish magazine packed with 109 vegan recipes, photos, an d tips. [£2.29]

Android Apps

Splat Companion: [11]  Splatoon! It's Nintendo's latest hit, with paint, octopuses, and multiplayer battles. The game has a bunch of different stages, and this app is designed to keep you up to date with all of them without having to boot up the game. Nice and simple, and is incredibly useful if you're a hardcore player. [Free]

Pintasking: [12]  Do you work on your Android and miss the handy little taskbar that comes on Windows and OS X? Now you can sort of make one for yourself. Pintasking lets you pin shortcuts to apps, tasks, and documents to your screen so you can quickly access them anytime and anywhere.

Win10 Launcher: [13]  Windows 10 Mobile is really here yet, but if you want to add a splash of Microsoft's new OS to your phone, short of buying a Lumia and installing the preview, try this. It's quite simple, it's an app launcher that redesigns your phone with a Windows 10-inspired design. Effectively it's a stylish live tile display for Android. [Free]

LINE HERE: [14]  This is an app for letting people know where you are, but it only for a certain period of time. Whether you're a worried parent trying to keep track of your child, on your way to meet with your friends, or you just got separated from the group. It updates in real time, and you set the timer between one and 24 hours so you know you're not being tracked longer than you need. [Free]

Drivemode: [15]  Phones are incredibly useful in the car, whether you're using it as a sat-nav, playing music, or just taking calls. The problem is using a phone when driving is incredibly dangerous. Drivemode takes all that away, with a no-look interface that lets you safely use your phone while driving. You control Google Maps, music players, and caling with swipes, no need for any fancy driving interfaces in your car. [Free]

Windows Phone Apps

Plex: [16]  The ever-popular media streaming app has had a nice update on Windows Phone, and there are a few cool features added in there for you to enjoy. That includes stalled photo uploads, bandwidth metering prompts, live tile controls, and changes to the design of your music libraries. [Free]

6tag: [17]  Instagram h ad an update this week that brought in portrait and landscape photos, and you'll be happy to know that famed third-party app 6tag has just updated to throw that feature in. From the looks of things the official WP Instagram app doesn't even have that yet. [Free]

Disneyland Expedition: [18]  It may be the end of the summer, but if you still have a trip to Disneyland (the California one) plann ed then you might want this app. It's a companion app for the park, helping you get the most out of your trip. It's got all the attractions and shows you can visit, a list of waiting times, restaurant menus, character meeting spots, a park map, walking directions, and more. [Free -- with in-app purchases]

Straw: [19]  Straw is a polling app designed to be troll free and ensure you get accurate results from friends, followers, and random inter net people. Just ask a question using pictures or text, and you'll get the answers delivered to you in real time. It's just had an update, and that's brought in topics to help you find polls to take part in far more easily. [Free]

Lara Croft Go: [20]  This is a turn-based Lara Croft game made by the same people who brought us Hitman: Go. You play as Lara as she explores to try and discover the myth of the Queen of Venom. Obviously you explore the ruins and solve puzzles in serious Tomb Raider fashion, but in a brand new way that lets you play your games on the go. [£3.89]

BBM+ brings new features to BBM for disabling read receipts, sending unlimited PINGs and more

bbm

If you’re a frequent user of BBM, you’ll be glad to find out about a new jailbreak tweak called BBM+ that brings a host of new features and functionality to the app that give you more control over it.

Developed by Neo Ighodaro, the tweak allows you to enjoy new features and get rid of the restrictions imposed by the app. Following are the options that BBM+ provides:

  • Enable or disable read receipts so that others will not find out when you have read their messages. The read receipt will only be displayed once you have replied to the message
  • Hide the typing indicator (“is writing a message”) when you are replying to a message
  • Prevent Ads from being displayed in BBM
  • Send unlimited amount of PINGs without any restrictions
  • Enable or disable screenshot notification on timed messages or photos
  • Get unlimited time on a message that comes with a specific timer
  • Enable or disable recent updates

These are all the new options that the tweak provides to give you more control over how the app functions. Once you have installed BBM+, you can get started by heading to the tweak’s preferences pane available in Settings. From there, you can enable or disable each of the options whenever you want.

BBM+ comes in handy to users who frequently use BBM to stay in touch with friends and families. The tweak allows jailbroken users to take advantage of new features that normal users could never have.

If you’re a long time BBM user and would like to give this tweak a try, head to Cydia and download BBM+ for free. Make sure to let us know what you think about the tweak in the comments section below.

From iPhone to live broadcast studio

Telestream has introduced Wirecast Go, a stand-alone iPhone live streaming app that adds to ENG (Electronic News Gathering) teams’ ability to be first to break the news.

The app enables users to capture content using their iPhone camera, insert graphics, logos, titles and other images and then stream live directly to YouTube or any other Real Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP) server supported by a wide variety of content delivery networks (CDNs).

According to Barbara DeHart, VP of desktop business at Telestream, “Today, smartphones are proving to be a valuable asset for field-based broadcast news teams and many other users, empowering them to capture news and events in ways that were previously unimaginable.

“Wirecast Go enables video journalists to create professional live productions on their iPhones and then broadcast them on the broadest range of social or private networks.”

Wirecast Go will be available with two levels of features and functionality. The standard version, which targets the enthusiastic amateur user, is free to download from the App Store and enables unlimited live streaming to YouTube from an iPhone.

Meanwhile, users looking for added functionality can unlock the premium features of Wirecast Go for $5.99. These enable live streaming to any RTMP destination and switching between unlimited numbers of shots, as well as provide the the ability to capture and replay highlights from the live production with just a few clicks on the iPhone.

Wirecast Go will be demonstrated at IBC at the Telestream Stand 7.G30. It is currently available in beta.

LinkedIn overhauls mobile & Web messaging functions, Instagram makes enhancements to Direct

Job-based social network LinkedIn began rolling out a redesigned messaging service on Tuesday, incorporating the look and features of popular chat apps like Facebook Messenger. Instagram, meanwhile, made several upgrades to its Direct messaging and sharing functions.

People with access to LinkedIn's messaging redesign [1] will see a streamlined interface, with options for talking to individuals or groups. Previously LinkedIn relied on an email-style interface more suited to brief or one-time exchanges.

While in a conversation users can insert emoji, stickers, GIFs, and other images, or send documents.

All exchanges with a given person are now organized in the same place, and LinkedIn says it has also improved push and email notifications for messages. Some functions, such as sent invitations, have been relocated as a part of simplification efforts.

Initially the redesign will be deploying gradually to users of LinkedIn's Web, iOS , and Android apps, and only in English.

More languages are due in "coming weeks," the company said. In the long term it's considering possibilities like voice and video chat, and a computer assistant that could suggest people to message and provide relevant information.

Users of Direct can now share content from their feed as a message, instead of just original photos, Instagram noted in a blog entry [2] . This should eliminate the need to tag a person in someone else's post in order to point them to it, a common sight on the service.

Comments in Direct have been organized into threads, and groups can be assigned custom names.

Lastly Instagram has added emoji support and the ability to quick-reply with a selfie photo.

The new features are available as part of updated mobile apps for iPhone and Android. The iPhone app is a free download for devices with iOS 7 or later.

ReBoard keyboard boosts your productivity and cuts down on app switching

Review: ReBoard keyboard boosts your productivity and cuts down on app switching

ReBoard Keyboard 1.0 for iOS teaser 001

The biggest thing about iOS 8 for me is a productivity boost stemming from new technologies such as pervasive inter-app communications, third-party actions in system-wide Share sheets and more. But for all the good work Apple’s done from a productivity standpoint, iOS (version 9 included) still has some way to go before it’s capable to exceed multitasking features on Microsoft’s Surface tablets or Samsung’s Note phablet, for example.

ReBoard [1] , a new software keyboard for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad created by India’s independent developer Gursimranjeet Singh, puts useful actions for performing common tasks and all sorts of look ups right into the keyboard itself so you won’t need to switch back and forth between apps like an animal.

By embedding useful third-party shortcuts within the context of the keyboard, ReBoard can save you a lot of time and boost your productivity.

Can your keyboard do this?

Some of the things you can accomplish within the ReBoard keyboard:

  • Schedule calendar appointments with natural language
  • Share Dropbox file links
  • Share YouTube videos
  • Add tasks to Wunderlist
  • Post to Slack
  • Search the web
  • Search Wikipedia or eBay
  • Perform simple calculations
  • Search and play your music
  • Translate words and whole sentences
  • Browse maps with local search
  • Move the cursor with the Space key

All told, the initial release of ReBoard offers eighteen powerful actions.

Multitasking within the keyboard

Multitasking features are enabled upon hitting a dedicated Command (⌘) key, which can be located next to the keyboard’s predictive section. Doing so reveals a panel with scrollable icons representing available actions. Tap an icon and whatever you typed after the Command symbol gets passed to that action.

Say you’re chatting with a friend in WhatsApp and you want to send them a YouTube video link for the new iPhone 6s commercial featuring Apple Pay .

Such a seemingly simple task normally involves a multi-step procedure requiring you to switch to the YouTube app, tap the magnifying glass icon to search for a specific video, copy the link, switch back to WhatsApp and paste the URL into the chat.

Or, I can tap ReBoard’s Command key in WhatsApp, type in ‘iphone apple pay ad’ and hit the YouTube icon. Video thumbnails matching my selected query appear which I can scroll through right within the keyboard.

Now I just tap on the Apple ad thumbnail, choose Insert Link in an overlay that appears and that’s itâ€"I just shared the ad with Seb without ever leaving WhatsApp.

Now imagine I’m idly chatting with Sebastien over iMessage and want to shoot him a song that I really like. Again, tap the Command key, type in a song name and hit the Music action.

ReBoard Keyboard 1.0 for iOS iPhone screenshot 002

Upon scanning my available on-device music, including songs from Apple Music that I have added to my collection, ReBoard presents the matches. Tap a song I want to share, choose Insert iTunes Link and boomâ€"the iTunes Store URL gets pasted right into Messages.

The screenshots above depict searching Wikipedia (at left), eBay (in the middle) and Google News (at right) for the term ‘Steve Jobs.’ You can also perform simple calculations within Reboard, similar to Spotlight on El Capitan.

ReBoard Keyboard 1.0 for iOS iPhone screenshot 003

Another example: how do you schedule a calendar appointment in WhatsApp?

You would normally switch to Apple’s Calendar app, right? With ReBoard, creating appointments is possible within the keyboard using natural language processing.

I just tap on the Command key and type something like “Design meeting tomorrow 4pm,” “House party next Saturday” or “Call Sebastien in 2hrs” and ReBoard creates an appointment for me in one fell swoop.

Versatility

Nearly every action includes additional things you can do with the results, like copying a link, downloading an image, inserting a link into the currently selected app and much more.

Connecting ReBoard with Dropbox will allow you to search your Dropbox files and share files’ links with others directly from within the keyboard. Images can be searched on the web, but also saved to the Camera Roll and shared with friends.

The Slack action lets me search and post messages to our group on Slack without having to dive out to Safari or actually open up the Slack mobile app.

It’s also possible to search local places on a map, view and share their addresses, call them directly, view their maps within the keyboard or open the location in Google Maps for iPhone and iPad.

ReBoard Keyboard 1.0 for iOS iPhone screenshot 008

And because ReBoard is a system-wide keyboard, the aforementioned productivity perks are always available in any app within the keyboard context. Keep in mind that Dropbox, Local Search and Wunderlist actions are locked behind a 99-cent In-App Purchase each.

Gesture typing

ReBoard includes a cool set of features designed to enhance your typing experience.

For starters, the keyboard includes full landscape support and typing suggestions.  For instance, typing “complete” will offer variations like “completion,” “completed,” ”completing” and more. And should you see a dot below a suggested word, tap it to reveal variations.

Sadly, ReBoard cannot tie into iOS’s stock dictionary due to Apple’s rules. To disable predictions, just long press the Command key until a “Typing suggestions disabled” message flashes briefly.

ReBoard Keyboard 1.0 for iOS iPhone screenshot 005

To be fair, predictive text entry feels like it could use more work though your mileage will vary.

All things considered, typing on this keyboard feels very natural: I was able to achieve my standard typing speed after just a few minutes, which cannot be said for countless other iOS keyboards which leave a lot to be desired in terms of actual typing.

ReBoard also does predictive emoji.

ReBoard Keyboard 1.0 for iOS iPhone screenshot 006

Speaking of which, you don’t even need to search for the right emoji. Just type your message, open the emoji panel and ReBoard will show you the most relevant emojis to what you just typed. To type a quick smiley, just swipe up on the emoji key.

To make you even more productive, ReBoard employs gestures.

For starters, you can delete a word with a quick swipe upwards on the Backspace key. If you tap-and-move your finger across the Spacebar key, you can position the cursor which can be quite handy when selecting a block of text.

ReBoard Keyboard 1.0 for iOS iPhone screenshot 007

Using the Spacebar key like a trackpad for scrolling through text and positioning the cursor works great and is reminiscent of Apple’s improved QuickType keyboard on iOS 9 which allows you to use the entire keyboard as a virtual trackpad of sorts.

To access numbers and punctuations, you can 1) go the old-fashion route and tap the Shift key, or B) swipe up on alphabetic keys. Lastly, swipe down anywhere on the keyboard to close it or swipe up on any other key to access its alternative character.

Themes and customization

What would a great iOS keyboard be without themes?

ReBoard supports theming so you will be able to soup up your keyboard with nearly a dozen themes. The app makes things even more interesting by loading a random theme every time the keyboard appears, should you choose so.

ReBoard Keyboard 1.0 for iOS iPhone screenshot 009

Unfortunately, only one theme is included for free as eleven others are sold through the In-App Purchase mechanism, priced at 99 cents each.

Issues

I have noticed a few annoyances with the initial release of ReBoard.

The biggest issue is how the keyboard behaves when using actions. At best, it’s fiddly to use: you must press the Command key before typing a search query. If you just tap the Command key and hit an action without typing anything, the app will paste whatever text was on your clipboard as the action’s input.

Likewise, should you input a query before tapping the Command key, ReBoard enters the last thing on your clipboard. This is by design but developers tell me ReBoard’s next update won’t default to using clipboard text as input so there shouldn’t be any confusion.

ReBoard Keyboard 1.0 for iOS iPhone screenshot 010

Truth be told, the inaugural edition of ReBoard has this switch present within its shell app (the ‘Keep actions history’ option) but it’s disabled by default.

Lastly, the initial release of ReBoard supports only English language for predictive input, but developers tell me that more languages are coming by way of future updates.

Coming to ReBoard soon

I chatted with developers about what fixes and new features might be expected from ReBoard’s forthcoming update. Turns out they had already submitted an update to Apple which improves ReBoard experience on many fronts.

This is what I could glean from them:

  • Using clipboard text as input will be disabled by default.
  • Auto-capitalization is improved a lot and works much better now.
  • Keyboard responsiveness is much improved and faster.
  • Bug fixes: ReBoard will work much better now in every corner of the app.
  • Guided tour explains more clearly how to use the Command key.

“We’ll be continuously adding more actions by integrating more third-party services by using their APIs,” developer Gursimranjeet Singh tells me. “We’ll also consider partnering up with others where it creates value for our users.”

They team is even mulling selling custom actions and workflows to enterprise users.

Final thoughts

When the developer initially approached me regarding reviewing ReBoard, I must admit I was a bit skeptical. Having tried dozens and dozens keyboards for iOS 8, I’ve come to realize that many of them are poorly designed, not very functional or just frustratingly slow to use.

But not ReBoard. While the aesthetics of the app could, and will be improved, and text entry made more responsive, the app’s focus on providing quick actions to get more stuff done is what really makes ReBoard stand out from the crowd.

ReBoard Keyboard 1.0 for iOS teaser 003

Once you get past the initial quirks and get the hang of it, ReBoard will save you tons of time. After using ReBoard for a couple days, I couldn’t bring myself to go back to double-tapping the Home button and sliding between apps.

ReBoard’s miniature app-like functions are guaranteed to accomplish common tasks in fraction of the time it takes to use multiple apps.

ReBoard is a great time saver and I couldn’t recommend it more.

Availability

ReBoard supports any iPhone, iPod touch or iPad model with iOS 8.1 or later. The app is fully optimized for native display resolution of the iPhone 5/5s/5c, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. As mentioned, additional themes and some actions require an In-App Purchase though most people will be pleased with actions available out of the box.

ReBoard, a 23.3-megabyte download, is $1.99 in the App Store [2] .
