Instagram’s Apple Watch app [1] is pretty nicely done. From your wrist, you can quickly glance at the latest snaps from the accounts you follow, check out recent comments, see likes, view profiles, like photos, send quick emoji replies and more.

Instagram for Apple Watch also lets you receive rich notifications when your favorite accounts post to the service. This useful feature ensures you won’t miss a thing when, say, iDownloadBlog posts new photos to Instagram.

Here’s how to set up Instagram for Apple Watch to receive these rich notifications on your wrist about specific Instagrammers you follow.

Choosing to get notified about specific accounts injects most recent posts from the Instagrammers you’ve chosen to receive notifications about into your feed on Instagram for Apple Watch, which is a shortened version of the full Instagram feed on your iPhone.

How to receive alerts about specific Instagrammers on Apple Watch

Step 1: Fire up the Instagram app on your iPhone by tapping on its Home screen icon. Alternatively, use Spotlight to search for “Instagram” on your phone or ask Siri to “Open Instagram”.

Step 2: To choose which Instagrammers you receive notifications about, first navigate to their profile. In this example, we’re going to turn on Post Notifications for Instagram for Apple Watch to receive wrist notifications each time iDownloadBlog publishes a new image to the service.

Step 3: Next, tap the three dots in the upper right corner to access the hidden menu.

Step 4: Now tap Turn on Post Notifications. From now on, you’ll receive a rich notification on your wrist whenever iDownloadBlog posts a now photo on Instagram.

Tip: You must follow the account in order to turn on Post Notifications.

You must be logged into Instagram on your iPhone for Instagram for Apple Watch to work. If you’re logged into Instagram on your iPhone and the devices are connected by Bluetooth, you’ll automatically be logged into Instagram for Apple Watch.

Additionally, to have Instagram’s notifications appear on your wrist in the first place, you must enable notifications for both Instagram’s iPhone app and Apple Watch app.

Step 1: To have Instagram’s notifications pushed to your iPhone, open Settings on the phone and change your preference in the Notifications > Instagram section.

How to receive all Instagram notifications on your Apple Watch

Should you want, you can elect to receive on your wrist push notifications for a wide range of Instagram activities. To enable these notifications in Instagram for Apple Watch, follow these steps.

Step 1: Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.

Step 2: Navigate to My Watch > Notifications.

Step 3: Flip the Instagram switch to ON, as shown below.

Again, doing so will send alerts for every Instagram activity selected through the iPhone app to your Apple Watch, such as when someone accepts your follow requests, sends you a direct message, tags you in a photo and more.

I suggest disabling this feature, not just to avoid getting inundated with alerts but also because Instagram’s rich notifications received through the Apple Watch app are better optimized for the wrist.

How to access Instagram Feed/Activity on Apple Watch

Step 1: In order to view a shortened Instagram feed on your wrist, open Instagram for Apple Watch by tapping its icon on the Home screen. Or, press and hold the Digital Crown to ask Siri to “Open Instagram”.

Step 2: Now tap the Feed button and then tap any image in the feed to see more information and to like or comment.

To like a post, tap the image and then the heart icon. To send a quick emoji reply, tap the image, choose Comment and then Quick Reply.

Tip: A shortened version of your Activity is available under the Activity section. Commenting using dictation isn’t supported yet. You also can’t watch videos on Instagram for Apple Watch.

With more than 70 million photos and videos now being shared on Instagram every day by people around the world, receiving only the alerts from specific accounts you follow is important if you want to cut down on the amount of noise hitting your wrist.

We recently had to report a trademark infringement to Instagram and were surprised they expedited out request and transferred our username to us.
