A pair of Bath students have continued a year of success with an innovative app idea.

University of Bath undergraduates and co-founders of Spuddy, Dominic Stevens and Max Pilgrim, were given a highly commendable pitch award at the networking event Venturefest Bristol, bringing them £250 prize money.

Spuddy, previously known as NEXUS, is a free iPhone app that enables users to find sports buddies based on their sporting interests, abilities and location.

It is the first app of its kind to use advanced technology to automatically match users with people nearby who play the same sports to the same level. Spuddy users can invite others to play games such as squash with them and arrange the date, time and location within the app.

The international management and modern languages students won last year's University of Bath Business Plan Competition, which invites students to create and develop a business idea, with support from mentors, who help them develop their thinking.

After winning the business plan competition, the friends secured £36,000 of funding from a private investor for their idea. This enabled them to hire an experienced app developer and graphic designer.

Mr Stevens said: "We're so excited to have received investment which has allowed us to come so far in such a short period of time.

"The start-up community is so fast paced and now is such a great time to be involved. We've had so much interest in Spuddy and we're overwhelmed with the support."

The duo were invited to a networking event in Brussels over the summer, and have also been to the head offices of Nokia and Deloitte UK to talk about Spuddy.

They have also had support and mentoring from Enterprise Bath, a student-focused service at the University of Bath's Student Union which aims to inspire students in entrepreneurship.
