Apple offering free apps to celebrate App Store anniversary

Apple are giving away free iOS apps from the App Store, to mark the fifth anniversary of the store coming online on the 10th July.

Apps available include Infinity Blade II, Tiny Wings, Traktor DJ and Barefoot World Atlas. None of the apps have been given away free before, and Traktor DJ usually has a price tag of £13.99.

Apple have also given detail of the most popular selling apps for the iPhone and iPad since the App Store launched. Games prove to be the most popular paid for titles downloaded from the store, with 8 out of ten iPhone apps and 7 out of 10 top selling iPad apps being classified games.

The top paid iPhone apps are Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, Doodle Jump, Cut The Rope, Angry Birds Seasons, WhatsApp Messenger, Camera+, Words with Friends, Tiny Wings and Angry Birds Space. For the iPad the best selling apps are Pages, Angry Birds HD, Angry Birds Seasons HD, Where's My Water, Fruit Ninja HD, Angry Birds Space HD, GarageBand, Words with Friends HD, Cut The Rope HD and Keynote.

However, the picture is very different with free apps, as only two out of ten top iPhone apps are games, and for the iPad it is only three out of ten.

The most popular free iPhone apps are Facebook, Pandora Radio, Instagram, YouTube, Skype, Words with Friends Free, The Weather Channel, Twitter, Temple Run and Google Search. For the iPad the most popular free apps are Skype for iPad, The Weather Channel for iPad, Netflix, Angry Birds HD Free, Kindle, Facebook, Pandora Radio, Calculator for iPad Free, Fruit Ninja HD Free and Words with Friends HD Free.

When the App Store launched back in July 2008, no one could have predicted just how much of an impact apps would have on smartphones, but it has grown to become an essential part of owning a modern smartphone. The App Store originally had just 500 apps when it launched, growing to more than 900,000 today. Earlier this year Apple marked more than 50 billion app downloads from the App Store , with the Store generating more than $10bn since launch.
