Digital Notes: The Rolling Stones App, and Sony's Streaming Music Discount

A Rolling Mobile App … : The last time the Rolling Stones went on tour, MySpace was the dominant social network and the iPhone did not exist. So to keep up with the times for its imminent 50th anniversary tour [1] , the band on Tuesday released a free mobile app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch that will “allow fans across the globe unprecedented interactions with the rock icons.”

The Rolling Stones Official App [2] â€" “developed with the involvement of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood” â€" has most of the features you might expect, like news updates, videos, a social feature and plenty of ways to buy music and merchandise. Most notable to fans and ticket scalpers, however, is that it also promises ways to win tickets for its current tour, which are going for $15,000 and up [3] on the secondary-ticket market.

Sony’s Streaming Discount: Music Unlimited, Sony’s competitor to subscription streaming services like Spotify and Rhapsody, has announced a big discount [4] . Its regular price is the industry standard $10 a month, but starting Tuesday it is selling access to its millions of songs for $60 a year; for subscribers to PlayStation Plus, its gaming service, the fee is $10 a year.

Introduced two years ago under the name Qriocity, Music Unlimited has struggled for attention in the marketplace. In January, a Sony executive said it had one million subscribers; over the summer Spotify said it has more than 15 million total users, four million of whom are paying subscribers.
