Watch the London 2012 Olympics live on your iPhone

The BBC has launched [1] a free app to enable iPhone and Android smartphone owners to watch the Olympics on their devices.

The BBC Olympics app [2] was released on Thursday, and has shot straight to the top of the iOS app chart over the weekend. As well as allowing users to watch live video of the Games and highlights, the app includes a page and medal tallies for each of the Olympic sports, every athlete, and every country.

There is also a constantly updated live text commentary to provide an overview of all 36 sports, as well as a schedule and results service.

Users can download news stories from the app to read offline, and there is a customisable tab bar for sports that each individual is most interested in.

The app is available to download now for iPhone, but of course, the real Olympic content won't be available to view until the Games start on 27 July.

One downfall, as pointed out by many reviewers on the iTunes App Store, is that there is no iPad version of the BBC Olympics app available.

For iPad users, there is the free London 2012: Official Results App for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games app [3] , which provides live updates, results, schedules, medal tables, athlete profiles and more, but does not allow users to watch the Games live.
