Conclusive THPS HD Hangar gameplay [1]

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 02:38 AM PDT

The highly anticipated remake for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is due to land on Xbox Live on July 18, but for everyone else on PS3, you’ll have to wait a while to get your hands on the game. The good news, is that some new gameplay [2] has popped up on YouTube and it gives you a look at the remastered Hangar level â€" a THPS classic.

Heading down that first Hangar ramp with No Cigar playing as the game’s soundtrack will be forever in our memories of THPS2. Thankfully, this track is included in the remake along with a selection of other classics like Superman from the first two games.

Hangar is no doubt one of the most popular levels in THPS folklore and we’re pleased to say that the conversion to HD looks pretty good, although it looks like developers Robomodo have decided to recreate the Hangar incarnation from THPS1 rather than THPS2.

All the classic props are intact â€" grinding the helicopter rails to open up the secret area outside, while we’re pleased to see that the original ‘gap’ sound effect has been kept from the original games too. One thing that we don’t like though is that the interface menu looks a bit bland and uninteresting.

It could have done with more colors, but it is worth noting that the gameplay is meant to be alpha, so let’s hope that the final version looks a lot better. We see a 2 minute run here and you’ll notice that the sound effect for specials are included as well â€" although they are highlighted by green text this time, rather than yellow from THPS2.

The game is going to cost $15 to download and there is a PC version in the pipeline as well. There’s no date on the PC version though other than ‘Summer’, so expect it to land some time after PS3 users get the game. Check out the new Hangar footage below and let us know your conclusion on the game. Will you be paying $15 for this or not?

O2 network service status page is back [5]

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 12:43 AM PDT

It is now pretty clear how widespread the O2 signal issues are, and following our earlier article [6] we saw a massive amount of feedback about O2′s networking being down, which shows this is a major problem that has even slowed the O2 network service status page to a halt. Loading times for the website are pretty fast, but if you try to get a status update you’ll find this area of O2 is much slower.

When you head over to the live status checker page [7] for O2 you have a few options, which includes the ability to search your area by postcode. This allows you to see how the service is in your area, although this search facility is extremely slow at loading considering the demand O2 are under right now. At the time of writing everything is working fine on the O2 website, even if a bit slow, and you can see that the latest update had been within the last 30 minutes.

O2 has restored their 2G network service â€" a few moments ago it had been confirmed via the status update page that O2′s 2G network is restored, so if you need to make an urgent text or phone call feel free to switch to 2G only and turn 3G off, although we do expect this part of their service to be restored shortly.

You can see all the stats updates below up to 8am UK time, so have a read a let us know if you’ve managed to use the 2G network since that time.

It’s worth noting that the spelling errors seen in the image above are even on the official O2 website, so they are obviously in a rush to pump out these service updates. We also heard from our users that the O2 problems are affecting all phone brands, not just Apple, but also not every O2 user has been hit by this.

BF3 Armored Kill DLC has new vehicle unlocks for base game [9]

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 12:39 AM PDT

Are you bored of the BF3 Close Quarters maps yet, or are you just starting to get good at them? If the answer is yes, the good news is that you only have to wait another two months until the next DLC expansion arrives, Armored Kill.

There is a lot of excitement residing around this pack and as the name suggests it is all about vehicle warfare. Armored Kill will be adding five new vehicles to the game and now EA has revealed a little more information about what other features you can expect to see when it arrives in September.

If you head to the official Battlefield website [10] , you’ll see that EA has added some blurb about what else you will be getting aside from the new vehicles. You’ll probably be aware that most of the information you see has already been revealed in a prior spec sheet that we told you about here [11] .

However, there is one new piece of information that is very exciting indeed. We knew that Armored Kill will bring 20 new vehicle unlocks to the game, but now EA has revealed that there will also be 5 new vehicle unlocks to bring back to the base game. This means that you will theoretically be able to unlock new weapons to use for vehicles such as the M1 and T90 tanks, the BTR-90 and LAV IFVs, the Flanker and F35 jets, the Little Bird and Z11W scout choppers and maybe even the Viper and Havoc helicopters as well!

As far as we’re concerned, that is excellent news. Not only will Armored Kill bring new unlocks to new vehicles, but it will also add some new functionality to existing vehicles, which could provide a massive shake up in the way you use the vehicles. We have no idea on what five unlocks are coming to the old vehicles, but we hope it includes some kind of weaponry for the main AMTRAC driver. It would also be nice if the main seat for the transport helicopter had some features as well, the same goes for the passenger seats for the scout choppers.

The helicopter pilot could also do with some secondary weaponry, although we’d be happy with some more gadgets to use. It’s important to point out that the new Armored Kill vehicles won’t be brought back into the base game, but we’re glad to see that DICE is compensating this by bringing five of the 20 new unlocks back to the base game.

What are your thoughts on this? If you could think of five new unlocks for the existing vehicles in the game â€" what vehicles and weapons / gadgets would you choose?

PS4 specs 10x power of PS3 [14]

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 12:13 AM PDT

There has been some confusion lately over the Wii U and if it should be called a next-generation gaming console, especially when certain reviewers are testing its specs and power compared to the aging PS3 and Xbox 360. There is no doubt the Wii U is more powerful than console hardware that’s years old, but how much of a jump will the PS4 and Xbox 720 make when they finally see a release date?

Rumors for the PS4 launch are pretty thin and any information making its way online about a date is normally either made up, or not what we would call a “solid” rumor, so what about the specs for the upcoming PlayStation 4? This article [15] states it has exclusive information regarding the PS4 hardware, although it’s worth noting these are based on what’s likely an alpha kit.

The source claims some pretty amazing specs, which some gamers feel are too perfect and others state they “would cost too much for a games console“. One thing to remember here is that while this PS4 hardware might cost a lot today, they might not for early 2014, and also these are not final specs if taken from alpha kits.

You can see a full rundown of the possible hardware in the image above, although we’d love to hear your thoughts on this, and what price you’d be willing to pay for a setup like this? If Sony launched a PS4 with these specs it would be around 10 times the power of a PS3.

O2 signal strength problems hit UK [19]

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 11:14 PM PDT

Millions of UK phone owners have woke up this morning and turned on their phones as normal, but thousands of O2 users are finding signal strength problems on a range of devices. We have two iPhone 4S phones running O2 in our UK office, and both have problems gaining more than one signal bar and cannot send or receive text messages or make phone calls, which shows either the O2 network has crashed or there is an issue with cell towers.

Some of our readers might have seen a few people complain about O2′s network over the last few days, but thought nothing of it until this morning when a much wider issue has taken place. Conspiracy theorists will point out the Sun erupted with its biggest solar flare yet (X1.1-class) for 2012, which happened on Friday and could have caused problems with satellites O2 are using, although we think there is a much more logical conclusion.

You can see an iPhone screenshot taken just a few moments ago running on O2 in the UK, and as you can see there are no bars. This is the first time we’ve seen this from O2, especially considering the phone had been restarted several times over the last hour and still nothing. The second phone we tested also has this problem, and we managed to speak with one other business contact in the UK and they too have problems with O2.

Online reports suggest that the O2 network crashed yesterday, and O2 has responded by explaining the issue is not related to hackers. Officials have also stated that not all of O2′s 23m users are affected, but considering how widespread we’ve found the issue to be it would be good to hear from our UK readers.

How is your phone this morning if you are on O2, can you send text messages and receive phone calls? Is this an issue just related to iPhone users, if not what phone are you using? In the last few moments we heard from O2, and they said engineering teams are trying to fix the issue right now.

Namco rates Wii U processor speed Vs PS3, Xbox 360 [21]

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 11:07 PM PDT

Thanks to Nintendo’s reluctance to publicly come out and reveal official information on the Wii U’s processor and graphical capabilities, the ongoing debate on how the new console matches up to the existing PS3 and Xbox 360 continues.

So far we have heard from the likes of Crytek and even Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto [22] on Nintendo’s new console, but now Tekken head Katsuhiro Harada has spoken about the Wii U, with specific mention on how the processor speed handles compared to the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Fans of the Wii U may be alarmed to hear that Harada believes that the processing speed is ‘a little low’ when compared to Sony and Microsoft’s consoles. He gave this statement when asked the specific question in a recent interview [23] with Digital Spy. He also said that while the CPU clock is a little low, he doesn’t believe that it is a big issue and that it will be up to the developer to find ways around this.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 [24] is also due out for the Wii U don’t forget and we’re guessing that these comments relate to his team’s efforts to deliver the same kind of quality gameplay and graphics as we’ve seen in gameplay videos on Xbox 360 and PS3. It’s clear that many developers have had a lot to say about the Wii U since Nintendo don’t want to talk about their CPU and GPU â€" so are you still worried about the true capabilities of the console?

Is it worrying to you that the Wii U doesn’t appear to be blowing away the PS3 and Xbox 360 in graphics quality? The Wii U is obviously dubbed as a next-gen console, but it does make you think about the possible gap that may emerge once the Xbox 720 and PS4 become a reality.

Do you pay attention to little details like this from developers, or is it the overall gameplay that matters to you when it comes to picking up a game? So far, the Wii U seems to be just on par with the Xbox 360 and PS3, not miles ahead of both â€" whether that is a problem for you or not will be the main deal breaker.

Download Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for Kindle Fire [27]

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 09:50 PM PDT

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean [28] hasn’t even been released officially yet, but we can tell you that the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system has already been ported to another device, the Amazon Kindle Fire tablet.

Jelly Bean is set to make its official appearance on the Nexus 7 tablet at the end of this month, but those of you in possession of a Kindle Fire may be tempted with this impressive looking port of Android 4.1. The Kindle Fire ships with a customized version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but if you have already tampered with custom software on your Kindle Fire, you’ll know that there are even more possibilities waiting for you aside from what Amazon give you out of the box.

Aside from giving the Kindle Fire access to the spanking new interface that Jelly Bean brings, it more importantly gives users access to the Google Play store, as the Kindle Fire by default only allows users to connect to the Amazon App Store for their software needs.

The build is far from perfect, but for a first go it is very impressive indeed. We’re hearing that the likes of hardware video acceleration is not supported at the moment meaning that HD videos are a no go, but the good news is that this should be fixed up in a later build along with other missing features.

To give this a go, you’ll find detailed instructions [29] over at Liliputing â€" you’ll also need to download the latest version of the Kindle Fire Utility app, which you can get from the XDA Developers Forums here [30] . Check out a video below to see how Jelly Bean looks on the device.

We’re impressed at how smooth Android 4.1 runs on the Fire, let us know what you think.

Open bootloader for Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 realized [35]

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 07:50 PM PDT

If you have been planning on picking up a Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone on Verizon Wireless, you are probably aware of the shenanigans going on right now with regards to the locked bootloader [36] that has greeted shocked owners who have already received their device.

Unlike other carriers in the US stocking Samsung’s new flagship phone, Verizon has decided that consumers are going to get a locked bootloader with their version of the S3, but luckily, Samsung has come to your rescue it seems. In an interesting move, the Korean giant has just announced the Galaxy S3 Developer Edition, which you’ll be able to buy direct from Samsung, with an open bootloader.

Samsung has revealed that this Developer Edition will cost $599 to buy and it will feature the exact same specs as the Verizon’s version, so you’ll still be getting 2GB of RAM and that Snapdragon S4 dual core processor. The difference though is the open bootloader and it now means that consumers have the option of whether they want to customize their device by paying a lump sum for the Galaxy S3 direct from Samsung.

The phone will still be compatibile with Verizon’s 4G LTE network, but the downside to this is that you don’t have a warranty and if anything goes wrong it is Samsung that you have to answer to, not Verizon. It looks like Big Red has thought long and hard about this move and you have to say that it is nice that Samsung has at least provided this option for consumers.

What do you think about this? Are you still disappointed with Verizon for their stance on locked bootloaders when all other carriers allow it? More importantly, will you be paying Samsung $599 for this privilege? The Developer Edition will be available over the next few months.

iPhone 5 worker leaks metal block [41]

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 10:14 AM PDT

When the number of so-called iPhone 5 leaks continue to show the same design what does this mean? When we’ve seen rumors do this with previous generations it has led to a design that matched the consensus, although there would be mockups made out to be the official product, but only have the aim of deceiving the consumer by creaking a rumor that tallies up with specs that most people are talking about.

The same thing could be said about an iPhone 5 worker that has recently leaked a metal block, which ended up on a new and little known technology blog [42] . This metal block can be seen in the image above and is apparently used during the manufacturing of the Apple [43] iPhone 5, or also known as 6th generation. The problem with this leak is that without any independent verification it is just another rumor, which follows the specs everyone is talking about, although those of our readers that have followed Apple news for as long as us know Apple rarely comment on rumor.

One Chinese worker could have passed some photos of this to the blog, but then at the same time couldn’t we make a metal block just like this and post photos online, which would become our exclusive story? This is a great way to create buzz, although we’re not stating this has happened, but rather the possibility. When the new iPhone 5 arrives later this year we will know exactly what we’re getting, and if it doesn’t follow the longer design then this photo could be passed off as a sample that never made it to final production, or someone’s idea of creating a fake mockup.

The image below shows a rendering and concept design for what the iPhone 5 could be, and this is certainly not the official product, but many analysts believe it resembles what consumers are likely to get when they lineup at Apple Stores towards the end of 2012.

Concerns from users that want change â€" having owned all 5 generations of iPhone and having had the same design for a while now, it is time for change. The iPhone 5 needs to bring that change, but if the design doesn’t change enough then some people will get bored and might find a new Android [44] design that gives them something fresher. The problem here is Android, at least from my perspective, and some people have invested a lot of money in iOS apps, iTunes movies, and a lot more. Moving to Android could be very costly, so let’s hope that Apple bring something really special this year.

Would you still buy the iPhone 5 even if the design only slightly changed?

Skyrim Dawnguard visuals for armor and weapons [48]

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 09:23 AM PDT

When we started playing Skyrim Dawnguard it was easy to get lost in the story, and from the moment we entered Fort Dawnguard [49] our focus stayed on exploring the story, until now that is. We wanted to hunt down some of the new weapons and armor the Skyrim DLC offers, which is after enjoying a few quests and objectives that included Dimhollow [50] , the offer from Lord Harkon [51] after finding Serana [52] , Chasing Echoes [53] , and entering the Soul Cairn.

Most gamers might want to complete Skyrim Dawnguard first but there are also some weapon/armor related things you can do along the way, and others that can be found from the moment you install the DLC after reaching a certain level. Killing a Legendary Dragon [54] is one of the achievements some gamers want since installing Dawnguard, and this can unlock the Legend achievement (see more about this in the first video below this article).

Videos that highlight Dawnguard armor and weapons â€" The second video below shows you how to upgrade your crossbow, and after using this weapon for a while it might be something you’d want to try after accepting that quest from one of the Dawnguard members. The third video gives you some Smithing tips for the new weapons, and shows you how to boost them for increased damage. The Dragonbone weapons are pretty cool and demonstrated with Smithing in the third video, although you might want to stock up on a few Dragon Hearts before starting this process.

We included a fourth video that shows all the armor sets within Dawnguard, and if there is any missing then it might be because they haven’t been found yet (an Ancient Falmer Crown would be nice). These armor sets include those for heavy and hardened Falmer, the werewolf, heavy and light Dawnguard armor, ancient Falmer armor, and of course plenty of vampire armor including robes, Vampire Lord, and Royal vampire armor, If you’ve found any other new types of armor in Dawnguard then please share a comment.

You’ll also see a few other videos below this article, which showcase some common and rare weapons from Dawnguard. These include the Dawnguard Rune Hammer and Axe, Auriel’s Bow, Harkon’s Sword, Daedric War Axe of the Inferno, and the Zephyr bow.

What unique weapons and armor have you found in Skyrim Dawnguard so far? We have shown quite a few on this page, but this is miles away from what’s available so happy hunting gamers. You might also want to read about Skyrim DLC 2 in this article [55] and how Morrowind and the Dwemer could be well worth exploring.
