Twitter Updates iPhone App; Improves Discovery, Search and Notifications

Twitter rolled out an update for its native iPhone app adding many new and improved features.

With the new version (4.2) of the iPhone app and iPad app , Twitter has improved their Discovery tab, improved push notifications related to Twitter interactions and has also added support for better Twitter searches.

While other third-party clients on the App Store did in fact support push notifications for various Twitter interactions, the official application was only limited to mentions and direct messages. With today's update, you can tweak your preferences to allow the app to notify you of new followers or when your tweets have been retweeted or favorited.

The updated search tab makes it easier to sift through Twitter for users. Suggestions will be displayed as you type letters, and people you already follow will accordingly be displayed when letters of their Twitter names are entered. Additionally, the app also now offers "suggestions for different spellings and related terms for your queries".

The updated discovery tab has reemphasized parts of Twitter that were made slightly obsolete along with the network's redesigned mobile apps; an endeavor that materialized last December . The tab now shows a feed of your follower's activity. You can see favorite tweets, things added to lists and more as they happen.

It remains to be seen if the latest version will convince users who had previously switched from the official app to other clients like Tweetbot  will switch back. Regardless, those who are still hanging on to the native Twitter app's simple design (for better or for worse) can update to version 4.2.
