Mobclix Index Gives Insight on Mobile App Usage Trends

App usage by iOS and Android ( News - Alert ) users across devices is happening during late afternoon (4-6 p.m.) and evening (9-11 p.m.), according to Mobclix, a Velti company and a real-time bidding mobile ad exchange.

These findings were revealed after analyzing the app usage across platforms and by pulling data from its exchange, company officials said.

Regardless of the platform, mobile application users surf ads in the morning between the hours of eight and 11.

People use apps the most during weekends, contributing to 38 percent of overall time spent, according to Mobclix [1] .

App usage increased by 108 percent during the Fourth of July weekend. Utility apps were the most popular during the weekend.

According to the Mobclix data, the Android platform holds the highest market share in the U.S., the U.K., and Japan. Eighty-two percent of the top 100 free apps use iAd as one of their ad networks.

While traditionally advertisers have placed a lot of focus on iOS, these results demonstrate that Android has a compelling offering that is actively engaging users.

“App and ad engagement across platforms continues to escalate as the range and capability of apps grows,” said Krishna Subramanian, co-founder of Mobclix, in a statement [2] . “While Apple's iOS and Google's ( News - Alert ) Android platforms both remain the front runners for ad impressions, Android is coming out ahead with it commanding the lead in 3 of the 5 countries we looked at in this study.”

The company derived the data from 120MM unique users seen across 10.5 billion impressions on the Mobclix exchange during the month of June. Exchange reach is calculated from the number of unique devices across the entire Mobclix exchange. Third party SDK data derived from analysis of the top 100 free apps on the iPhone ( News - Alert ) app store as of June 30, 2011.

Recently [3] , another Mobclix survey said that the top three reasons for AT&T ( News - Alert ) customers changing over to Verizon were reception issues, personal hot spot, and reputation. About 14 percent of iPhone 4 users are on the Verizon network, and they form four percent of all iPhone users.
