Scan Stop & Shop groceries on your iPhone from Business Updates

The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. said today that it is starting the roll out of a new free app that allows customers to use their iPhones to scan their groceries.

According to the Quincy-based chain, it is the first US supermarket company to conduct such a pilot program. In April, Stop & Shop said it would launch the program at some point this year, and today the chain said that the test has begun.

The program is launching in three Massachusetts Stop & Shops --- 65 Newport Ave., Quincy; 300 Grove St., Braintree; and 129 Samoset St., Plymouth. Over the next 18 months, the program, called Scan It! Mobile, will be evaluated. If all goes well, the program could be rolled out to additional stores in the 390-store chain.

Customers at participating stores who have an iPhone 3GS or an iPhone 4 can download the app at stopandshop.com/scanitmobile [1] or at the Apple App Store. Customers can then “shop, tally and check out through their mobile phones,” Stop & Shop said. “Scan It! Mobile also provides shoppers with personalized offers based on each customer’s past purchasing history.”

The Scan It! Mobile software was developed in partnership with Modiv Media of Quincy.
