New free iPhone App brings World War One to life

In the centenary of the start of WW1 a new iPhone app has been released to help bring WW1 to life. War 14-18 [1]  introduces and explains some of the many WW1 locations in Northern France.

It is set up as the travels of young filmmaker Guillaume who has been reading his grandfather’s diary about life in the Great War. He decides to visit the area and investigate himself.

The app has five chapters, each of which covers up to ten different topics. These include:

1. The Battle of Artois: Pas de Calais

The French Memorial at Notre-Dame de Lorette, the trenches at Vimy and the Wellington Quarry.

2. Mateship and Cobbers: Fromelles

Friendship on the front, the Abbiette Bunker, the Australian Memorial park and more.

3. From all around the World: Somme

The Danger Tree, Monument to the 51st Highland division, Wellington Trench and more.

4. Between Sky and Earth: Aisne

Cavern du Dragon, California Plateau, Balcony Trench

5. Daily reflections of the Great War: Flanders

Remi Farm, the execution of Private W. Baker, the visit of George V

A wifi connection is recommended to download the different sections, each of which is full of photos, audio and a video animation which introduces the new topic.

With a lot of content this app is ideal to introduce children to WW1, learn more about the war, or prepare for a trip to France to visit the sites yourself.
