Google Introduces An Easier Way To Sync Gmail Contacts To Your iPhone

No need to let Facebook and Twitter have all the iOS-integration fun: today, Google announced [1] a new, easier way for Gmail users to sync their Google Contacts to their iOS devices. The company is introducing support for an open protocol [2]  called CardDAV [3] , which will allow third party clients, including, most notably, the native iOS Contacts app, the ability to sync with Google Contacts.

There are already a number of ways to get your Google Contacts onto your iPhone. For example, the Apple app stores on iOS and Mac contain several third-party clients which offer the ability to sync Google contacts to your device. I’ve been enjoying the Mac app Cobook . Plus, you can configure iTunes to specifically sync your Google Contacts, if you’re eschewing iCloud, or you can set up Google Sync [4] . But the new CardDAV support means you can quickly set up contact sync directly on your phone in just a few steps, if you have yet to import your Google contacts through another means.

Google has posted the detailed instructions here [5] , and they’re fairly straightforward:

  • Open the Settings application on your device.
  • Select Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
  • Select Add Account…
  • Select Other
  • Select Add CardDAV Account
  • Fill out your account information in the following fields:
    • -Server: Enter “google.com”
    • -User Name: Enter your full Google Account or Google Apps email address.
    • -Password: Your Google Account or Google Apps password. (If you’ve enabled 2 Step verification [6] , you’ll need to generate and enter an application specific password.)
    • -Description: Enter a description of the account (e.g. Personal Contacts).
  • Select Next at the top of your screen.
  • Make sure that the “Contacts” option is turned to ON.

When you’ve finished the setup, the sync will automatically begin.

Google already supports IMAP [7]  for email and CalDAV [8]  for calendar, which enable mobile users on iOS and Android the ability to access Gmail and Calendar, respectively.

Gmail, also known as Google Mail, is a free email service provided by Google which has innovative features such as “conversation view” email threads, search-oriented interface, and plenty of free storage (almost 7.7GB). Gmail opened in private beta mode in April 2004 by invitation only. At first, invites were hard to come by and were spotted up for sale on auction sites like eBay. The email service is now open to everyone and is part of Google Apps. ...

Save money with free iPhone coupon app SnipSnap | How To

Let me give you a glimpse into my household's organizational strategy. When the occasional need arises for a run to Bed Bath & Beyond, I rummage through the junk drawer in the kitchen to see if any of the half dozen or so BB&B coupons scattered in there are still valid, only to discover the sad fact that all have reached their expiration date. I then trudge off to the store empty handed, fully expecting a coupon to arrive in the mail within a day or two. It is no way to live, but now that I am using SnipSnap [1] , my fruitless junk-drawer searches are a thing of the past.

SnipSnap is a free coupon app for the iPhone [2] . With it, you can either scan a printed coupon or search for previously scanned coupons by other SnipSnap users. I downloaded the app because I was hoping to be able to use it with iOS 6 [3] 's new Passbook app, but such functionality won't be ready until October. Even without Passbook integration, SnipSnap is a, well, snap to use. Here's how it works:

Launch the app and you can either sign in to Facebook or Twitter, or you can just jump right into the app. Since I am not an extreme couponer with knowledge of deals that must be shared via social network, I didn't sign in with either. I did allow the app, however, to know my location and send me push notifications for its alert feature, which we'll get to in a minute.

When you snap a photo of a printed coupon, SnipSnap converts the text, images, and bar code into a mobile-optimized offer, which you can redeem from your phone. To test SnipSnap's scanning capability, I found a flyer for Walgreens and tapped the Snip button to snap a photo. Unfortunately, the app misidentified the three Walgreens coupons. It got the product wrong for each and the expiration date. For example, it read an attractive five-for-$5 Gatorade offer as a Werther's coupon that expired four months ago. It did better with two manufacturer coupons, but manufacturer coupons aren't supported yet. You can use only coupons issued by a store itself, but SnipSnap hopes to bring support for manufacturer coupons with a future update. An Android [4] version of the app is also in the works.

With my admittedly minimal scanning efforts more miss than hit, I turned to SnipSnap's Discover feature. Here, you can search for coupons scanned by other SnipSnap users. You can search by product or store, and when you find one you like, tap the Snip it! button. I found the ubiquitous 20 percent off coupon for Bed Bath & Beyond along with a handful for Target and hit the road. I've had mixed success with getting bar codes scanned on my iPhone [5] ; my local Kinkos/FedEx is batting less than .500 at scanning a bar code for a prepaid shipping label. At both Bed Bath & Beyond and Target, however, SnipSnap went two for two. For each coupon I used, I could either show the cashier the photo of the coupon or the bar code. After you use a coupon, the app asked whether it worked or not so that it can list a success rate for each.

From the Coupons view, you can see all of the coupons you have snipped, your favorites, or those you have used. To favorite a coupon, tap the star when viewing a coupon. If your collection of SnipSnap coupons starts to grow big, tap the Store button to view by store.

The app also can send you alerts, reminding you that you have coupons for a particular store. As I walked through the expansive Target parking lot, I got an alert telling me I had coupons. And while I was stopped at a red light next to a Walgreens on my way to Target, SnipSnap alerted me that I had a coupon. It'll also alert you when coupons you have snipped are about to expire. In settings, you can set these alerts to notify you between one day and two weeks before the expiration date.

Do you have a favorite coupon app? If so, please share in the comments below.

Cartoon Wars Blade Review » 148Apps » iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch App Reviews and News

Cartoon Wars Blade is a hack 'n slash RPG featuring lots of stick figures getting sliced up, but is it just too repetitive to be long-lasting fun?

How many cartoon guys must die before the violence ends? If Cartoon Wars Blade is to be believed, that number is immeasurable, as lots of stick figures meet their demise at the hands of the stick figure protagonist. Instead of donning a gun-suit or commanding armies, this time the goal is to slice and dice fellow stick figures to death in an arena.

The controls are simple: on-screen joystick on the left, and a slider on the right that can automatically attack in the left and right direction. Players get a short sword, long sword, and projectile weapon; the first two are regulated by an energy system where using them too much requires them to recharge, and projectile weapon serves as a special attack that is activated as damage is done. Credits and crystals can be earned to be spent on new weapons, armor, and stat upgrades.

The audience for this game is simple: the gamer who likes to build up a character, and really likes the cartoon style. I mean, really, really likes the cartoon style. The gameplay is mindless and repetitive, and that’s fine! That seems to be the point here. This is part of a long-running series, and that’s part of the appeal, I’m sure. It is a grind-fest, and players interested in this game should be absolutely ready for it. Some of the levels in the dungeon can feel overly-long, but it’s pretty much the only variation in the game: wave after wave of stick figure enemy doesn’t allow for much variety, it seems.

While there is a two-currency system, coins and crystals, crystals can actually be earned in the game itself, and on a regular basis too! While the game does make it a lot easier to pay for upgrades, the system does actually make sense from a gameplay perspective, or is at least designed as such.

There is a simple charm to fighting enemy after enemy, though only in short bursts because variety is not Cartoon Wars Blade’s strong point. It’s a free download, fans of stick figures fighting would do well to give it a shot, though it’s far from the elite category of hack ’n slash games on iOS.

iPhone 5 and iOS 6 Anticipation Caused App Download Drop in August

Fiksu, Inc. (www.fiksu.com), developer of the award-winning Fiksu for Mobile Apps Marketing Platform that combines advanced media optimization technology with the world's largest app media inventory, today reported that demand for the iPhone 5 prompted a decrease in app downloads and mobile app marketing costs in August.

The Fiksu App Store Competitive Index (which measures the average aggregate daily download volume of the top 200 free U.S. iPhone apps) dropped by 7.3 percent to 4.05 million daily downloads in August, down from 4.37 million in July.

The Fiksu Cost per Loyal User Index decreased by 20 cents in August to $1.34, representing an almost 13 percent drop from $1.54 in July.

The Fiksu Indexes measure monthly fluctuations in competition for rank in the Apple App Store, and the cost to acquire loyal users(1),( )helping mobile app marketers benchmark their performance against industry averages.

"August was like the calm before the storm for app marketers," said Micah Adler, CEO, Fiksu. "Similar to the period preceding the iPhone 4S launch in 2011, we saw users once again holding off on downloading apps in the weeks before the much-anticipated iPhone 5 launch. App marketers also took the gas off their advertising spending during August, awaiting the availability of iOS 6 in September and the chance to promote updated apps. The combined effect made for a slow month overall ahead of what we expect to be a busy Q4."

For Fiksu's full analysis, visit http://www.fiksu.com/resources/fiksu-indexes#analysis.

Fiksu has accumulated more than 42.5 billion app actions, including launches, registrations and in-app purchases, as well as real time bidding requests. This data is used to drive real time optimization of ad campaigns, to help app developers acquire large volumes of loyal users at very efficient costs.

Camera+, a Top-Selling iPhone App, Expands to iPad

Camera+, an iPhone camera app that has been a top seller in the App Store for years, expanded to the iPad [1] on Thursday. Not many people shoot photos with an iPad, but the core features of the app are its editing suite and integration of Apple’s iCloud online storage service. The company also released an update for the iPhone version of the camera app to include cloud synchronization, so that photos taken on an iPhone will also appear in the iPad app.

Nine million people so far have downloaded the Camera+ app for iPhone, which costs 99 cents, said Lisa Bettany, a developer at Tap Tap Tap, the studio that made Camera+. Together, the iPad and iPhone apps should pose a challenge to Adobe, which offers a suite of Photoshop apps for editing photos on the iPad, as well as its own cloud storage service.

Like the iPhone version, the iPad app was designed to make editing photos quick and easy. It has five basic tools: Scenes for applying automatic touch-ups for photos taken in certain light conditions, like in low light or indoor areas; Adjust for making basic adjustments like rotating the image or removing red eye; Crops for cropping portions of a photo; FX Effects for applying fancy filters; and Borders for adding stylized borders.

In addition to allowing photos taken on an iPhone to automatically appear in the Camera+ iPad app, the company has designed the iPad app to allow photos edited in that app to synchronize automatically with the user’s iPhone photo library. Sharing the photos on Facebook, Twitter and Flickr, or through e-mail, can be done inside the apps.

Ms. Bettany said it was extremely challenging to make iCloud work properly inside the app. She said that Apple’s toolkit for embedding iCloud was inadequate on its own, and that her team had to retool the feature to get it to work.

“It didn’t work for the past year, and developers have been complaining about how bad it is,” Ms. Bettany said in an interview. “Our developers have recoded the whole thing to make it work. It’s taken twice as long as it should because of the problems with it.”

Trudy Muller, an Apple spokeswoman, declined to comment.

Tap Tap Tap [2] , which has sold a number of big hits in the App Store, is an unusual success story. To attract early sales for new apps, it sends an e-mail to its list of about 325,000 past customers who opted to gets e-mails from the company, many of whom enthusiastically download the apps. After getting a big spike in sales, the company then relies on the quality of the app to generate word-of-mouth. It does no traditional advertising and does not take money from investors. At one point it turned away Twitter [3] , which was interested in acquiring Camera+.

Ms. Bettany said the company has carefully studied the economics of the App Store, but even she is surprised that Camera+ has lasted so long as a top seller with so many apps competing for people’s downloads.

“Sometimes I’m baffled, like, why are we still here?” she said. “But it just comes down to it being a good product. Even though apps come along â€" and I’ll admit when an app does things better than us â€" it seems like our app is the most stable, has the least bugs, it works consistently, it’s easy to use, it’s not too complex and it doesn’t have too many buttons.”

Max Payne 3

Max Payne’s home has always been on the PC. The original 2001 gameand its sequel debuted on the PC, and though they received console versionsâ€"some of which captured the excellence of their PC counterparts and some of which didn’tâ€"it was on PC that he first made his mark. Times have changed for Max, and his latest outing hit consoles first and PC second, which may raise concerns about whether, this time around, it’s the PC version that feels secondary and the console versions that feel definitive. As it turns out, such concerns are unfounded. Max Payne 3 is just as gorgeous and intense on PC as it is on consoles, and the pinpoint precision offered by a mouse makes the PC version the best way to enjoy this brutal and haunting shooter.

He takes cover these days, but Max can still put bullets into brainpans with the best of ‘em.

Wherever you go, there you are. It’s a truth Max Payne knows better than anyone. Fleeing his New York life to take a job working security for a wealthy family in Sao Paulo, the hard-drinkin’, pill-poppin’ Max finds that his demons come along for the ride. Though the details of the plot add up to your typical story of conspiracy and corruption, of the rich and powerful preying on the poor and helpless to become even more rich and powerful, the writing, acting, and presentation elevate this tale well above a boilerplate video game crime story.

It’s hard to stay ambivalent once you see the horrors being suffered by the innocent here, and you’ll likely want to see Max’s quest for vengeance through to its conclusion just as badly as he does. Max reveals a complexity here not seen in earlier games, as he hits rock bottom and must either stay there or face his demons head-on and make himself anew. Other characters, too, reveal a surprising humanity. You might be tempted to write off Marcelo, the youngest brother in the wealthy Branco dynasty Max is hired to protect, as the shallow playboy he often appears to be. But in moments of disarming honesty, he reveals to Max a depth that lies beneath the facade he presents to the world.

Cutscenes use multiple moving panels to pay homage to the graphic-novel-style storytelling of previous games without feeling beholden to it, and the considered use of blurring and other visual effects echo Max’s state of mind, perhaps making you feel as if you’re the one who has been hitting the bottle a little too hard. James McCaffrey does an excellent job reprising his role as Max, bringing a wider range of emotions to a character who has previously often been one-note. The writing is terrific; Max’s world-weary wit is as bone-dry as ever, and as he ruminates on things like loyalty and loss, much of what he says has the sound of hard-earned wisdom. Subtle touches throughout the game make Max seem convincingly alive, such as the complex look that crosses over his face at the start of one stage when bloodshed seems inevitable; it’s as if he dreads what’s coming, but does his best to mentally prepare himself for it.

Max Payne 3 has far more sunlight and color than earlier Max Payne games, but the menaces Max faces here are at least as dark as those he’s faced before. The locales Max has to gun his way into or out of are alive with authenticity and detail. Nightclubs throb with dance music and light shows; children play soccer in the favelas; run-down hotels are packed with leftover junk from their earlier days of luxury. And it’s not all tropical locations and bad Hawaiian shirts for Max Payne here; a few great flashbacks that take place in Hoboken, New Jersey, reflect the snowy weather and urban atmosphere of earlier Max Payne games, as well as Max’s previous fashion sensibilities, and connect his new life with his old one.

Max hasn’t lost his ability to blow bad guys away by the hundreds, but in Max Payne 3, reflecting modern sensibilities and perhaps his own age, he takes things slower and makes judicious use of a new cover mechanic. Yet the addition of this currently common element doesn’t mean that Max Payne 3 feels like every other third-person shooter. Far from it. The game is differentiated from its contemporaries by several qualities, not least of which is its unflinching violence. Bullets visibly tear through bodies, leaving holes that spurt blood as your enemies die. Each encounter with a group of enemies ends with a bullet cam, showing your final, fatal bullet soaring through the air and striking its target in grisly detail, and giving you the option to pump excessive, unnecessary ordnance into the poor bastard. It’s a cathartic and satisfying way to end each firefight.

Bullet time, the defining mechanic of the Max Payne series, lends gunplay a cinematic intensity that remains exhilarating from the start of the substantial campaign until its finish some 12 hours or so later. When bullet time is enabled, you can see every pellet that bursts forth from a shotgun, every bullet that whizzes past your head. Windows break apart beautifully; concrete shatters to reveal the rebar underneath; and all other sorts of believable destruction to the world around you takes place as you and your enemies try to gun each other down.

Max hasn't forgotten how to fly.Bullet time slows your enemies down significantly, letting you aim and fire faster than they can respond. But despite the significant edge this gives you over your foes, they are no pushovers. They make smart use of flanking tactics, so you need to stay aware of what’s happening on all sides, and, yes, you need to make effective use of cover. There are still situations aplenty where an old-fashioned head-on approach can get the job done, but by and large, you need to approach combat in Max Payne 3 a bit more defensively than in past games. This measured approach allows for individual moments to stand out; rather than losing yourself in a constant flurry of gunfire, you can take satisfaction in a particularly skillful shot, and lining that shot up with a mouse is easier with the precision afforded by a mouse than it is with a gamepad.

It's an iterative follow-up to the original game that drills down to the series' core, improves it, and gives the user more of its intense brand of Match Three Meets Jenga action. We'll have a lot more evaluative things to say about it in a future review, but for now we'd like to point something out: this is one of the first games that actually looks and feels different on iPhone 5.

The iPhone 5 version of Super MAMC features a zoomed-in tower. As opposed to stretching the game out, creator PikPok and Adult Swim chose to bring the game closer to the player. It took us awhile to come around to it, but in the end, it makes swiping a little bit easier, which should lead to higher scores and crazier multipliers.

Just take a look at the difference:

We quizzed Adult Swim's Chris Johnston about the zoomed-in tower and what it brings to the game. Spoiler: he's jacked about it.

"From a player’s perspective it’s great," Chris tells us. "Since we’re a vertically oriented puzzle game it means there’s more screen real estate on each condo to swipe, and less chance your finger will mis-swipe the wrong condo."

He adds that it's nice to not have to worry about this, as the game really cranks up the pressure with its two-minute time limits. He also adds that PikPok considered raising the height of the tower on iPhone 5 before settling with the zoom in.

"A couple different ideas were put forth like raising the height of the tower, but ultimately zooming in was the best player experience and didn’t unbalance the game in other ways," Chris says.

"I think this was the best choice. The monsters are also a little taller on screen and closer to the tower so everything just feels bigger."

Neat, right? By the way, all Adult Swim games in development now will take advantage of the iPhone 5 and its taller screen. Naturally.

"To me the exciting thing is getting little interface things like pause buttons or virtual controls out of the way," Chris tells us. "176 pixels doesn’t seem like a lot especially if you just think about it just as the edges -- but when you’re able to move some of those UI elements to the corners it gives you more screen space in the center for the game. All the titles we have in development now all support the larger display in that way and it makes a huge difference."

Adult Swim and its partners know what they're doing with this screen, so feel free to get stoked for what's next. Oh, and play Super MAMC. It's a really good game.

Mad Riders

Sometime between populating getaway resorts with the walking dead inDead Island and evoking the perils of the Wild West with the Call of Juarez series, Polish developer Techland also released the flawed Nail’d, an off-road arcade racer with a manic sense of speed and expansive big-air drops. Beyond some minor additions to its already tried-and-true formula, the downloadable Mad Riders is essentially a remake of its older brother and suffers from a lot of the same problems as a result.

Doing all of these thingsâ€"as well as winning races and making good time in checkpoint-based trialsâ€"contributes XP to your overall level. This grants you access to more ATVs with their own relative attributes and new tournaments and modes. However, the statistical differences between each ATV are far too negligible to take seriously, as the game’s frenzied pacing never necessitates any sort of performance-based consideration. This dampens the weight of the progression when levelling up and unlocking better ATVs, since you never really feel a strong need to upgrade. Plus, because you don’t get a good look at your ride during races, spending time customising its colours and appearance is a rather moot undertaking.

The laws of physics do not have jurisdiction over Mad Riders. Just like in its predecessor, Nail’d, the sheer speed and velocity of the racing is strangely unhinged, but that feeling doesn’t get put to good use. The tightly spaced nature of each course tends to funnel you forward with little room for tactical freedom beyond the aforementioned shortcuts, making the courses feel unnecessarily restrictive. Equal time is spent between bouncing off the sides of the course and actually racing on itâ€"you often feel as if the game’s gravity is forcibly dragging you down from the air after a jump merely to keep you on track. You can partially contain this last effect by “air steering,” that is, pulling down on the thumbstick to extend the distance of a jump and pulling up to shorten it. This can be handy, although it’s a tactic that rarely proves vital unless you’re looking to top a time trial score or gain some extra air in a stunt event.

Success in Mad Riders often relies on beelining through a race from beginning to end with little improvisation. Some may enjoy this throwback to the physics-ignorant racers of old, but the game’s fast-paced focus becomes diminished by a lack of real dangerâ€"which cheapens the thrills of rocketing through a course at unreasonable speeds and ultimately conspires to make the game a sort of dull roller-coaster ride. The most common frustration you run into is getting stuck behind a tree or rock after veering ever so slightly off a track’s narrow pathway, which stops your momentum dead.

The game’s bright colours, cheesy voice-overs, and positive reinforcement bring to mind a late-’90s arcade racer vibe. The commentator’s repetition of the phrase “Sidewinder!” when you’re drifting around corners will surely drive you insane, but thankfully there is an option to shut him up. An understated cel-shaded aesthetic also lends itself well to the game’s sharp-looking rocky mountains and lush forest environments. It’s a fairly appealing look that adds some much-needed personality.

The online multiplayer modes are the same as those found in the single-player component, allowing up to 12 players to take part. A sense of speed is well maintained throughout, and playing with others helps to liven up the otherwise dull racing. There are some issues, however, such as having to quit out and start a new lobby to change your chosen queue of modes, which is pretty frustrating.

You take the high road and I'll take the upside-down road.Between its pleasant visuals and nostalgia for the Sega-styled arcade racer scene, Mad Riders could have been more enjoyable than it is. Instead, it’s just plain boring. More than anything, it simply feels like a game you’ve played a hundred times before. This lack of personality makes Mad Riders difficult to recommend when there are better, more accomplished racers out there.

Apple didn’t update its shopping app for the taller iPhone 5 display

Just a quick thought here. Apple ahead of the iPhone 5 release  updated iLife, iWork and a bunch of other iOS apps it makes. All good. Sadly, notable absent was the official Apple Store app [1] .

A free download, it’s a time savior for buying Apple gear and is indispensable in a ton of scenarios, like current iPhone 5 supply constraints. Combined with the Personal Pickup option , the Apple Store app is the most elegant and convenient purchasing solution.

That being said, it’s a shame the software has seen little love lately. Apple hasn’t even bothered to update the app with support for the taller iPhone 5 display. Just check out those annoying black bars in the below screenshot. Lame, I’m tellin’ ya…

The Apple Store app last received an “iOS compatibility update” on September 5.

How lame is that?

Here’s what it looks like on an iPhone 5 (thanks, Ben Madison [2] !)

Click for larger.

Check out those fugly black bars at the top and bottom.

By the way, that’s how all 640-by-960 pixel apps (those not specifically optimized for the iPhone 5) appear on the iPhone’s taller 1,136-by-640 pixel screen.

Ugly, no?

The 'Manga-Camera' App Is Free Photo Fun On The iPhone - ComicsAlliance

Want to convert regular photos into something resembling comic book art, but don't want to Google a Photoshop tutorial? Thanks to Supersoftware's Manga-Camera app [1] on iOS, you can now instantly convert iPhone snapshots into black and white wonders adorned with a variety of backgrounds and sound effect staples from the manga tradition. Inspired by Crunchyroll [2] , I spent a few minutes experimenting with the app. It seemed to work best on inanimate subjects in front of blank backgrounds (light walls work especially well), so any of your ambitious Fumetti/Photonovel/Cine-Manga dreams will probably have to take a backseat to unasuming novelty. Since the app is free, however, that should suit most users just fine. If nothing else, I had a good time shooting random action figures for a few minutes and eventually got my pug's attention for some kawaii action. You can take a look at some of my Manga-Camera App adventures after the cut.
