Reviewed: Endomondo Premium App

The fact that running is a popular sport is evidenced by the growing number of applications that can be downloaded for the iPhone. One of the originals â€" and still one of the best â€" is Endomondo, a nifty app that uses your phone’s GPS capability to track all your sports data, whether that’s running, walking or cycling.

We’ve been a long-time fan of the free version of the app but jumped at the chance to trial the Pro version for a month, on the basis that it adds extra functionality â€" and dispenses with those annoying ads that seem to pepper free apps.

Getting started with the basic functions is easy: simply download the app, choose your sport and away you go: Endomondo will display elapsed time, distance and speed. When you’ve finished exercising, simply press stop and your workout will be uploaded to the Endomondo website, where you can see a map of your route, get speeds per mile, and heart-rate (if you wear a monitor).

It also allows you to find like-minded friends, follow their activities and even challenge them. So far, so good, but this is all available free, so why would you upgrade? It’s a worthwhile function â€" and one for which Endomondo Pro has several answers. With the Pro version you really have a GPS activity tracker that, together with your phone’s inbuilt functionality (mainly in the form of your music library) outperforms anything available in watch form. We particularly like the Weather Information feature, which allows you to see the temperature, humidity and wind for each workout (your cries of ‘I told you there was a headwind’ can nowbe proven).

You can also use the Beat Yourself feature, where you choose a previous workout as a goal and have the audio coach help you beat it. Another nifty feature is the Low Power Mode that allows you to increase battery time for long workouts, great if your gearing up for an ultra marathon. Training feedback is enhanced with Heart Rate Zones and the ability to choose predefined Interval Training repetitions or create your own: it really is like having a personal coach and feedback all rolled into one.

The only down side we can see is that you have to carry your phone: this is easy for cycling, not so easy for running. Even though there are a number of effective phone carriers or pouches available, you still need to be able to see your phone for that instant feedback, as you would a GPS watch. But the backend system of Endomondo Pro is excellent and the ability to be able to tap into a worldwide community of fellow runners and share training information is an incredible motivation tool.

Endomondo Sports Tracker is a free App. You can upgrade to Endomondo Premium for $2.99/month or $19.99/year
