NEWCASTLE United are set to lodge a second bid for priority defensive target Mathieu Debuchy by the end of the week as they step up efforts to land the France international.

The Journal has learned that United’s summer plans centre around a £20million triple swoop for Debuchy, FC Twente striker Luuk de Jong and Ajax’s versatile midfielder Vurnon Anita.

And, despite having initial bids turned down for all three players, they still hope to recruit the trio. United hope to take a significant step towards signing Debuchy by the end of this week.

United made an initial offer of £4million for the right-back at the start of the month but believe they can land the 26-year-old for £6million.

Alan Pardew is clearly hopeful that Magpies owner Mike Ashley does not look to cash in on any of the club’s top performers who helped Newcastle United to within a whisker of a Champions League spot. There has been much speculation about the future of a number of talents including Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse, Yohan Cabaye and Chieck Tiote but all four remain at St James’ Park.

The Newcastle United boss now wants to see Ashley dig deep to bring a trio of players who can help add further strength in depth to a squad that could well do with investment.

Mathieu Debuchy had looked to be set to move to Newcastle United before his top notch performances led to other sides taking an interest in the Lille full-back who is seen by Pardew as a replacement for Danny Simpson who is seemingly set to leave the club having not put pen to paper on a new deal.

Vurnon Anita is another player high up on Pardew’s wish-list and the 23 year old’s adaptability could be a very useful addition to the Newcastle United squad. The Ajax man can play as a left back and in a defensive midfield role.

Moves to bring in Luuk De Jong have been prolonged and recent quotes from FC Twente boss Steve McClaren suggest that the Dutch international forward could well be keen on moving to the North-East club, one would wonder if such a move would leave the door open for either Demba Ba or Papiss Cisse to leave, something Newcastle United supporters will hope doesn’t transpire.
