Awesome Apps of the Week
Happy July 4, readers! Itâs been a great week for apps in the App Store, and as always Cult of Mac has your back when it comes to the tracking down the best new tools you should be filling your iOS devices with.
Scroll through our gallery to check out our picks for the hottest new apps and updates this week.
Scanner Pro 6
Hopefully you wonât be doing any work this July 4 weekend, but Scanner Pro 6 is definitely worth a download for the next time you have to scan a document.
Essentially transforming your iPhone camera into a miniature document scanner, all users have to do is point and tap to scan a document to their handset. A batch-scanning mode meanwhile lets you simply pass multiple documents in front of your iPhone, with the app intelligently scanning each one in turn.
Perhaps best of all is the new Scan Radar feature which detects images in your camera roll â" meaning that you can scan images even if you donât happen to have Scanner Pro 6 open at the time.
Available on: iPhone/iPad
Price: $2.99 (on sale)
StarWalk
Not new or updated this week, weâve included Star Walk 2 because it happens to be a great app â" and because itâs currently going free as Appleâs chosen App of the Week.
If youâve got the slightest interest in astronomy, Star Walk 2 is the app for you â" with detailed information on the exact position of stars, planets, constellations, comets, ISS, satellites, star clusters, nebulae and meteor showers in the night sky.
If youâre looking for a stargazing tool (perhaps to discover if this yearâs Independence Day will be anything like the movie Independence Day) this is the app for you.
Available on: iPhone/iPad
Price: Free (currently)
The Executive
A long time in the making, The Executive is a an endlessly entertaining iOS action game in which you play as a CEO whose company has been overrun by werewolves. Itâs up to you to save your employees and, ultimately, the entire city.
From that wacky premise, Riverman Media have created a massive 120-level fighting masterpiece thatâs described by its creators as something of a mix between Street Fighter II and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link â" albeit with plenty more lycanthropes and $1,000 suits for good measure.
Best of all, the game features no in-app purchases, meaning that even in a title stocked with money-hungry businessmen you wonât be asked to pay through the nose for your high-quality gaming action.
Available on: iPhone/iPad
Price: $2.99
Bee
Iâm forever trying out new email apps for my iPhone, looking for one which matches the mobile-friendly accessibility of a tool like Twitter.
Bee is a pretty nifty solution, which uses your regularly-scheduled iOS Mail app but adds a system-wide iOS extension and Notification Center widget to compose emails and share content from other apps. An additional $1.99 In-App Purchase also lets you add unlimited contacts and create groups for emailing many people at once.
One of the fastest ways to send an email youâll find on iOS.
Available on: iPhone/iPad
Price: Free (with IAP)
HeyLets â" Social City Guide
A city guide app with social networking features, HeyLets allows users to specify their interests and then be connected with other users based on these shared hobbies. You can look to see whatâs hot in a certain area, or post a photo, video, or short description yourself to share an experience of your own.
HeyLets 2.0 adds a new UI, with less clutter, improved performance, and better navigation.
Whether youâre looking for food, entertainment, shopping, volunteering, or any number of other opportunities, this appâs got you covered.
