Apple recently released the second beta of iOS 9 and a hidden feature was discovered by 16-year-old app developer Kaleb Butt. When Butt was updating his device to iOS 9 beta 2, he discovered that his device was able to temporarily delete apps to free up space for the software update. This feature is especially useful if you own a 16GB iPhone or iPad.
If you do not have enough free space on your iOS device while installing iOS 9, then a dialog box will pop up â" which says: âIn order to make room for the software update, some apps will need to be temporarily deleted. All deleted apps will automatically be replaced after the update is complete. Would you like to continue?â The deleted apps will be restored with its data once the software update is completed. Here is a screenshot of a tweet that Butt posted [1]  about the app deletion feature:
By allowing the âapp deletionâ feature, iOS will automatically decide which apps to temporarily get rid of. If you hit âcancel,â then you can delete apps manually to clear up space for the software update.
In the second beta of iOS 9, a number of bugs present in the first beta have been fixed. According to MacRumors [2] , AirPlay connect has been improved and changing a password in the Family section of iCloud Settings works now. The Mail app no longer crashes when trying to print a message and third-party keyboards also work in search results now.
iOS 9 is substantially smaller in file size than its predecessor. The size of iOS 9 requires only 1.3GB of space to download and install compared to the 4.6GB file size required for iOS 8.Â
App Thinning
Another highly anticipated feature in iOS 9 is âapp thinning.â This feature allows developers to offer smaller versions of apps to users that have older iOS devices. For example, developers could offer a smaller version of their apps without Touch ID and Apple Pay features to iPhone 5 owners.
Scheduling Software Updates
Apple is also adding automatic installation options for iOS 9 updates. From time-to-time, a software update pop up will appear that gives users the option to install it right or away or schedule it for later. This feature is similar to the way that software updates are handled in OS X Mavericks.Â
Apple announced iOS 9 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) this month. Some of the new features in iOS 9 includes a revamped News app, iPad app multitasking, transit directions in Maps, the introduction of an Apple Wallet app and improved battery life. Until the public release of iOS 9 this fall, Apple is offering betas 9 to developers. The next line of iPhones â" which are reportedly going to be called âiPhone 6Sâ and âiPhone 6S Plusâ â" will likely ship with iOS 9 out of the box.
What are your thoughts about the app deletion feature? Do you think this feature would be convenient for you? Let me know in the comments section!
