Redpark While it’s a no-brainer connecting an iPhone or iPad to a Wi-Fi network, Ethernet-only networks have been a no-go zone… until now. If you find yourself in a situation where there’s no Wi-F connectivity to a network but there are plenty of free Ethernet ports, what you need is the Redpark Ethernet Cable . This is a modified version of the common USB to Ethernet adapter but this one is different in that it has the normal RJ45 connector at one end of the 7-foot of CAT5e cabling, and an Apple Lighting connector at the other end. Now, while this is undoubtedly a useful tool for people who don’t have the ability to use a Wi-Fi connection, there are some limitations to consider. Because the cable relies on a proprietary network stack, only apps built using the RedSocket SDK will work (the RedSocket SDK is available as a free download for developers). However, there is a web browser and terminal emulator in the Apple App Store that works with the ca ble. It requires iOS 8.0 or later. While the cabling supports a 100 Mbps Ethernet connection, Apple’s Made for iPhone (MFI) specifications mean that bandwidth is limited to 5 Mbps. The cable cannot be used for charging an iPhone or iPad. The Redpark Ethernet Cable is priced at $89. See also:
