Apple is set to offer the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus unlocked and SIM-free in the U.S. starting tomorrow, Jan. 6.
As reported by 9to5Mac [1] , the SIM-free unlocked GSM versions of Apple’s latest flagship smartphones will be available through Apple’s retail and online stores in the country.
At the moment, Apple is selling the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus in the U.S. with a carrier contract on AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon, or unlocked and contract-free on T-Mobile.
In selling the handsets unlocked and SIM-free beginning tomorrow, Apple will enable customers to use the devices with GSM-compatible SIM cards on any supported carrier around the world.
The pricing for SIM-free unlocked iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models will be the same as that for contract-free unlocked T-Mobile units, starting at $649 for the 16GB iPhone 6 and $749 for the 16GB iPhone 6 Plus.
The iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus were released in September last year, but it’s only now that they’ve been set to be offered unlocked and SIM-free.
In the case of its previous generation of smartphones, Apple started selling unlocked and SIM-free versions of the iPhone 5c on the device’s launch day in September 2013 and of the iPhone 5s in November , a couple of months after the high-end handset’s launch closely following that of its more colorful and affordable counterpart.
