Best iPhone Apps 2014: The Good. The Bold. The Quirky

Apple’s App Store boasts one of the most extensive collections of apps this side of the sun. Inside you can pretty much find anything â€" and we mean anything. But what are the best and, more importantly, which are worth having on your iPhone ? In a bid to locate, download and test the best apps for iPhone in 2014 we’ve been tinkering with applications all year to bring you a list of the best apps in the run up to Christmas. We’ll be adding 10 new applications to this list every week as December 25 approaches.

To keep things tidy we’ve decided not to include the big apps that every man and his dog knows about â€"â€" Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google Mail and the like. Instead, we’re focusing on useful applications that might have slipped under your radar. These apps are all designed to be either informative, useful, fun or quirky â€"â€" you'll find no dross in here. Just solid gold hits all the way through.

So, without further ado, here's our pick of the best.

Stacks 2 - New Age Currency Converter (£1.99) [1]

I know it seems like you may not need ANOTHER currency converter, but Stacks 2 will change your mind. Its killer feature is that it uses iOS 8’s extensions, which allows the app to convert currency not just in the app, but in the Safari web browser on your iOS device. When you are browsing the web and see a currency you want converted simply tap the share button and then select Stack 2’s extension in the share sheet. The currency on the web page will be converted instantly. The app also features two iOS 8 widgets: one is a Quick Converter and the other is for Denominations. There’s also a built-in calculator and historical forex charts.

Timberman (free) [2]

Timberman is a truly addictive game. The premise is simple: you’re a lumberjack that needs to chop down trees. Keep chopping, but avoid the branches as the tree gets shorter and shorter. It sounds simple and easy, but the longer you chop the harder it gets. As you progress you’ll chop trees in four different environments and be able to unlock 20 different characters. If you’re fan of retro arcade games, you’ll love Timberman.

memeTV (free) [3]

I can spend hours viewing meme’s online, which is why this app is probably a dangerous app for me to have. memeTV allows you to browse the best television memes right on your iPhone. Find one you like? Save, favorite or share it with just a few taps. But memeTV goes further. If you find a meme you like but want to make it your own, you can remix it by adding your own text. It works for both still image memes and also GIF meme’s. The app even allows you to trim sections of GIFs to get them to your liking. And if the meme gives you a yearning to watch the TV show it’s based on memeTV offers integration with Hulu, the iTunes Store, and Amazon Instant Video so you can buy it or watch it instantly.
