Microsoft unveils free Office apps for iPhone, Android

Microsoft wants you to draft, edit and create from anywhere ― for free.

The tech giant released new Microsoft Office apps for iPhone and Android tablets Thursday and updated its iPad series, which launched earlier this year.

The trio ― Word, Excel, and Powerpoint ― is free to download.

Previously, iPad users needed an Office 365 subscription to use the apps. A single Microsoft Office app for iPhone also required the monthly payment. Subscriptions start at $6.99.

While all users can create and edit on the new suite of standalone apps, subscribers will have access to more advanced editing options and more cloud storage, Microsoft said in a statement on Thursday [1] .

The launch is part of Microsoft’s campaign to unchain Office from its desktop roots.

In March, the company released its Office for iPad app, which has been downloaded 40 million times, the company said.

Earlier this week, Microsoft and Dropbox announced a partnership [2] that allows users to edit Office docs in Dropbox mobile app and access Dropbox docs from Office apps.
