Microsoft Word has unseated Facebook Messenger as the top Free iOS app.
Move over, Facebook Messenger. There's a new king of the App Store â€" Microsoft Word.
Just days after Microsoft released a set of free Office apps for iOS devices, Word has climbed to the top of the Apple Store's U.S. chart. Microsoft also currently takes up two other spots in the Top 10 free list, with Excel sitting at No. 8 and PowerPoint holding it down at No. 10, beating out other popular apps like Pandora (No. 11), Swype (No. 18), and Pinterest (No. 23).
The change comes after Microsoft announced that iOS Office users can now create and edit documents for free [1] on their iPhone or iPad without an Office 365 subscription. Previously, those without an Office 365 subscription could only view Office documents.
Office for iPhone was previously available as one app ( Office Mobile for Office 365 Subscribers ), but separate iPhone apps for Word [2] , Excel [3] , and PowerPoint [4] are now available to download in the iTunes App Store, as is an updated version [5] of Office for iPad, all of which require iOS 7.0 or later.
The change was an about-face for Microsoft, which for years didn't even make Office available on mobile devices. The Office app finally arrived on iPhone last year , and the iPad version landed in March .
Meanwhile, if you previously paid for an Office 365 subscription to unlock the features that are now free, don't fret. Microsoft recognizes that some of its Office 365 purchasers might be regretting their decision, and is now offering pro-rated refunds [6] to anyone who might be affected. You'll have to jump through a few hoops to get the refund, though.
