This past week the first add-on for the excellent dimension-defying puzzler Monument Valley landed on Google Play. Forgotten Shores adds eight extra chapters to traverse in new and increasingly surreal settings, where perspective and the normal laws of physics don't quite apply.
Like the original Monument Valley, Forgotten Shores isn't an enormously difficult or time-consuming experience, but both titles look and sound absolutely gorgeous, with soothing ambient audio and wallpaper-worthy visuals. Both are well worth supporting with your $3.99 and $1.99 respectively.

I'm spending way too much time with an old favorite game again. Radiant Defense is available on just about every screen you could have in your house â€" Android (including an excellent Shield portable version), iOS, Windows and OS X (via Steam), and now your TV using the new Nexus Player . And I play it on all of those screens.
It's yet another tower defense game, but has great visuals and a space theme. Build your towers and turrets, start the wave, and hope you come out the winner. Radiant Defense has plenty of different towers to choose from, as well as modules you can use to alter the map. In-app purchases bring even more tower types and upgrades, and keep the Android version ad-free. The base version is plenty of fun, and it's easy to complete the whole thing without spending a penny.

The LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play edition has started to receive Google's Android 5.0 Lollipop update, according to user reports. While cogs have begun turning, it may be some time before your device receives the update due to the staggered rollout.

Kingdom Rush: Origins
The classic tower defense game is back, and is elfier than ever. Kingdom Rush: Origins goes back in the fantasy story's timeline to when everything started, but to be honest, players are really into this for the finely tuned strategy gameplay and goofy cartoon style. Defend against waves of monsters, gather up their gold, and level up your defensive structures to take on bigger threats. Let too many through the gauntlet, and it's game over.
Most of the towers will be familiar, though the old artillery tower has been replaced with a boulder-hurling druid. There are new heroes to control, including an assortment of premium ones, though heroes now have their own signature spells to unleash. The gem system is still in place for consumable power-ups. Heroic and iron challenge versions of every level give you some real tricky stages to chew on. Strategy fans will get sucked right back into Kingdom Rush: Origins [1] . Be sure to check out the predecessor, Frontiers, if you haven't already.
Tilt 2 Live: Gauntlet's Revenge
Tilt 2 Live: Gauntlet's Revenge, is the latest iteration in an excellent action game series. Instead of being stuck in a static arena and having to tilt your device around incoming enemies and towards power-ups, you have to work through a continually scrolling stage, similar to an endless runner. Gather blue cubes as best you can without getting hit. Take too many hits, and it's game over. The finely tuned gyro controls make for a really tense and fast-paced game. Give the last Tilt to Live game [2] a shot if you're looking for more twitchy action.
Valiant Hearts
Valiant Hearts is a puzzle game by Ubisoft set in World War 1. Inside you'll find a heartwrenching story about soldiers on the front line of The Great War and their faithful hound Walt. Valiant Hearts boasts a gritty graphic novel art style and a varied mix of gameplay types. Additional episodes to the story are available through in-app purchases, or you can get a bundle for the whole set. The earlier release on PC and console enjoyed a great reception, and the mobile adaptation has shaped up really nicely.
Civilization Revolution 2
Civilization Revolution 2 revamps the graphics of the classic strategic simulation game while maintaining the core turn-based gameplay of diplomacy, commerce, and war. Players must build cities, connect them, harvest natural resources, train soldiers, research technologies, and construct wonders on the road to global domination. The Civilization series has an intensely loyal fanbase, and the latest PC game, Beyond Earth [3] , has earned solid reviews. In that light, the whooping $14.99 pricetag may seem appropriate, especially if you're of the mind that mobile games deserve the same level of compensation as big boy platforms.
The Banner Saga
The Banner Saga is a highly polished tale chock-full of Norse mythology. Help two caravans survive in a world without a sun while also negotiating tenuous relations between humans, giants, and numerous factions between them. Jump between meaningful dialog sessions and turn-based combat with 25 different characters spanning five classes. Failure in combat leaves lasting results through the rest of the game. The art style alone in The Banner Saga is enough to warrant a purchase, but it also strikes an excellent balance between strong, character-driven story and classic RPG-style action. It's a premium game with no in-app purchases, but on the downside, there's no full-screen immersive mode.
The Hunt
The Hunt is a social networking app for folks looking for the source of specific fashions. Pictures of clothes are posted, and users leave comments as they try to figure out where to get it. Hunts can be for identical items, similar ones, things that go with the posted item, or open invitations for style suggestions for the poster. Anybody conscious about their style will find a use for this imaginative crowdsourcing app.

Google has unbundled SMS and MMS messaging in a new optional app called simply Messenger. All of the important features are there, like quick search, easy sharing, message blocking, emoji support, and archiving. For now you can keep SMS handling in Hangouts, but some folks want to keep the two separate, namely because they don't want to get involved with Google+ or the other services that have been bundled in with Hangouts. For them, the new Google Messenger will be a godsend.
Disney Movies Anywhere
Disney Movies Anywhere allows fans of new and classic films to access their entire Disney Collection from their Android device. The app links in to your Google account so any Disney flick you've bought through Play Movies will be available through the app as well. Often you'll get codes for digital copies when you buy a disc, which can be redeemed through the app. Support across multiple platforms means you can watch on just about any screen. For now the service is only available in the U.S., but keep an eye out for broader geographic reach soon.

Apple's much-rumored 12.2-inch iPad isn't expected to debut until 2015, but we may already have some new details about its hardware.
Japanese magazine Mac Fan just published schematics that reportedly show the tablet's design, and blog Mac Okatara [1] posted a copy of the document online (via MacRumors [2] ).
According to the image, Apple's giant tablet would include a 12.2-inch screen and would measure 305.3 x 220.8 x 7mm.
This would make it slightly thicker than the iPad Air 2, which is 6.1mm thin.
Mac Fan also claims the larger iPad will come with an improved A9 chip, which sounds like it would be the next iteration of the A8X processor found in Apple's current iPad.
As for other design tweaks, the Japanese publication says the "iPad Pro" would come with dual top and bottom speakers to enhance the tablet's audio quality.

An iPad mini 4 may also be in the works, according to Mac Fan, and the magazine says both tablets are likely to launch between April and June of 2015.
It's unclear exactly how credible Mac Fan is, so we'll have to wait until next year to learn more. Apple has been rumored to release a larger sized tablet for months, but these bits of speculation became more credible when Bloomberg reported that Apple was working on such a tablet in August.
Both the Xbox One and PS4 have now been available in the UK for a year and will very much be in the thoughts and minds of those looking to treat themselves or others this Christmas. It can also be argued that waiting a year for the dust to settle on a frenzied dual console launch was a wise choice as both machines have improved significantly in the last 12 months.
There are many more games, the consoles are both capable of new and exciting features that weren’t available at launch, and if you shop around you can get very attractive deals that include one or more titles to play immediately. However, the big question is which one to go for? Which console best suits your tastes and needs?
Last year, straight after launch, Pocket-lint put them head-to-head as was to find out which console offered the most. But as much has changed in the interim period the comparisons aren’t so relevant today. That’s why we’ve decided to revisit the format and look at which of the two is a better option for you.
Which has the best design?
Xbox One
When we first reviewed the Xbox One we claimed that the Xbox One is “not showy†and “designed to be integrated, to nestle in and make itself part of its surroundingsâ€, and that’s obviously still true today.
Having lived with it a year, what initially looked to be a boxy device that invoked memories of VHS players actually suits an AV cabinet well. The only real issue is an enormous separate power supply.
PS4
However, as before, we still think the PS4 looks nicer. “Unlike the Xbox One the PS4's power supply is in the main box and that makes a big difference in placing it under your telly or on your hi-fi rack,†we said in our original review and still agree it makes a big difference.
“You can place it vertically if you've got the height for it and there's a second logo so it still looks cool from its second angle. The Xbox One, meanwhile, is designed to lie flat only,†we added.
Conclusion â€" PS4 wins
Although the Xbox One is not as huge and cumbersome as some have suggested, it isn't quite as sleek as the PS4. It can't stand on end (if that's your thing) and comes with the Microsoft trademark power brick, which you have to find extra room for among your power sockets.
We have found in the last year though that the PS4 runs hotter in operation and is more prone to make a whirring noise if used for too long in a location with little ventilation.
Which has the best controller?
Xbox One
The latest Xbox controller is not so much a complete overhaul of the one for the Xbox 360 but a refinement.
In our original review we said that it is “a refinement of everything that was good before†and were impressed with the vibration feedback especially. “If you're familiar with the former, then the new controller will just fall into your hands and go to work as it always has,†we said.
PS4
The Sony DualShock 4 that comes with the PS4 is more of a leap forward for the brand. “It's an all-round better experience than the current PS3 DualShock,†we said at the time.
"In play we've been getting around seven hours from a single charge, and because it's got a micro USB port you can charge it from elsewhere in the house if you don't want to do so via your console.
And one year on we’ve grown to love the DualShock perhaps even more than the Xbox One controller. It feels good in the hand â€" large and comfortable. Plus its touchpanel does come in handy for accessing menus and other options in certain games.
Conclusion - PS4 wins
Price wise, a second PS4 controller will cost you fractionally more than an Xbox One equivalent. However, cross-platform games often have extra or simplified control functionality for the touch panel at the top of the DualShock and that shades it we feel.
Which has the best user interface?
Xbox One
One of the biggest advantages the Xbox One has over its main rival is that Microsoft more regularly updates its user interface with new and interesting features. It has tidied the main screen dramatically since launch and monthly patches have introduced better ways of accessing friends’ information and your games library.
Themes have also been recently added as an option to customise your homescreen, with pictures from popular games available to use as a backdrop behind Microsoft’s oft-adopted tile design.
PS4
Visually, the PS4 has changed little in the year, but Sony has also introduced themes lately â€" with both game-specific and design-led themes available on the PlayStation Store to download. Some will cost but most are free. There are also static and dynamic options.
The menu bar has been refined lately, with less applications or games appearing in the long list and a separate, categorised section to find your software more easily. In short though, it’s very similar to before.
Conclusion â€" Xbox One wins
Although we really liked both user interfaces, especially the speed at which they operate, the PS4 home screen looks rather sparse in comparison to the Xbox One's. It's much more simple to use, but feels less personal than the highly customisable one from Xbox. Some might prefer that, of course, and we really feel as if it’s a personal choice.
Since we last talked about Xbox One SmartGlass little has changed in design terms or functionality when it comes to games. It presents a tile-based home page that apes the menu system of the console and, as we said originally, “you can use it to Snap items tooâ€.
“From your phone, you can switch to a game, open Xbox Music and away you go. You can access details about your friends as well as send them messages, so you get to use your phone's keyboard, rather than having to mess around with the Xbox One's on-screen effort.â€
The big change in the last year has been more recently and is specifically for those who have invested in an Xbox One Digital TV Tuner. If you have the Freeview tuner plugged into your Xbox One, not only can you use SmartGlass to change channels, you can watch live TV streamed to your mobile device too.
PS4
The PS4 has always had the best second screen feature hands-down â€" namely PS4 Remote Play. And now it’s not just limited to PS Vita, but can be used on Sony Xperia Z2 and Z3 devices and through the newly released PlayStation TV.
There is a companion app too, but the ability to play PS4 games remotely through a portable device or tiny set-top-box in another room is a real winner and great incentive.
Conclusion - PS4 wins
You can’t deny that the PS4 Remote Play functionality is a masterstroke by Sony, especially as it has now been introduced to other devices. Being able to carry on your PS4 games when somebody wants to watch the main TV is quite simply a better use of portable technology that streaming live TV. After all, many of the channels available on Freeview are also available through free streaming apps anyway.
Which has the best games line-up?
Xbox One
Since launch the Xbox One has had a significant focus shift towards gaming with the Xbox team speaking more about its games-playing talents than its entertainment nous these days.
As is the way of the world at the moment, it also has exclusive content deals with some of the biggest publishers for their triple-A games, including Ultimate Team Legends for FIFA 15 Â and first dibs on a load of maps for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare .
Let’s not forget Titanfall  either, which was and is still exclusive to Microsoft.
PS4
Like the Xbox One, the PS4 has had its own swathe of exclusive titles over the year, with the remastered version of The Last of Us  being a particular highlight.
Infamous: Second Son  was, in retrospect, an underrated game and if the server issues with DriveClub  are ever fully sorted out that will be a magnificent driving game with bags of potential.
Next year there are some true triple-A titles coming to, including The Order: 1886 and Bloodborne. And existing games such as Destiny have exclusive content on the blue side of the equation too.
To be honest, it’s impossible to split the two consoles apart when it comes to quality games as they both have many titles now that are well worth playing. The Xbox One perhaps shades it a little on the homegrown games available now, but the PS4 has a healthy selection on the horizon.
This battle will heat up no doubt come next Christmas run-in, with Halo 5, Uncharted 4, Rise of the Tomb Raider and no doubt many other exclusive big guns forcing gamers to make a choice.
Which console has the best additional features?
Xbox One
At launch we were impressed by Xbox One’s voice control functionality through Kinect, saying that “it covers a lot of ground, giving you access to a full range of functions without having to use a controller at allâ€. And since then the algorithms have improved and the voice recognition is even better.
If you don’t have a Kinect however there are still plenty of other feature highlights, including media streaming â€" something the PS4 is still unable to do. Either through the Xbox One’s own media player or the Plex app, you can play music, video or view images from an attached USB drive or streamed over a home network. 3D Blu-ray support has also been added since the console was released.
You can also play your TV service through the Xbox One if you have a Virgin Media TiVo or Sky+HD box and use the Xbox to change channels, volume, etc. OneGuide, the box's EPG, is excellent as well.
Microsoft has made Snap a little more relevant in recent times too, with the ability to have a smaller side bar screen for a separate application especially coming in handy during games when you want to talk to or message a friend.
PS4
The main new feature Sony has introduced in the last year came with firmware update 2.0 in the last few weeks: Share Play.
Share Play enables a PS4 owner to either send a friend (who must also own a PS4) live streamed feed of his or her gameplay, let them take control, or even join in on a two-player game without actually needing to own a copy themselves.
For example, you own a copy of FIFA 15 but want to play a friend who doesn’t, while they are sat comfortably in their own home. You spark up Share Play and can instantly get them involved as if they were sitting next to you.
The other feature that is exciting but won’t hit the UK until summer 2015 is PlayStation Now. Available in the US already in beta form, PS Now is a cloud gaming platform that currently offers PS3 games to rent. However, rather than download them, you play them over the internet with the video of the gameplay being streamed to your PS4 and the control codes being sent the other way.
There are plenty of other features, including 3D Blu-ray playback and the ability to play Dolby Atmos soundtracks (something the Xbox One is unable to do natively), but Share Play is the biggest highlight.
Conclusion â€" Xbox wins
Share Play is an excellent idea and we’ll have to live with it a bit longer to see if we use it that often. It is though a positive statement by Sony that the PS4 is made for gaming.
While Xbox also focuses on its gaming aspects primarily now, the fact that it has embraced media streaming and playback when its rival has not shades it for us. PlayStation Now might make a massive difference when it launches in the UK, but until then the Xbox One has more apps and abilities in the all-round entertainment sphere.
But which is best overall?
There’s been a slight reversal since we last compared both consoles like-for-like. The Xbox One came out top then but totting up each category above it is the PS4 that wins this time around.
The PS4 is undoubtedly still the best console for hardcore gamers. PS4 Remote Play and Share Play are geared entirely at those who want to extend their gaming experience. The Xbox One is a more rounded entertainment machine with a better app selection and the killer feature of being able to stream your home media too.
You essentially have to decide what you want most from your console. The one thing we can guarantee is that you won’t be disappointed in either. 2014 has been a hugely exciting year for the advancement of videogaming and 2015 promises to be even better. Let the games begin.

The simple and blocky styling of Minecraft is endearing to many fans of the game, but if you’d like a more sophisticated 3D look with realistic lighting, reflections, and enhanced graphics you can achieve the shimmering 3D paradise you crave.
Polished graphics are a prominent feature on most modern video games and we’ve come to expect well rendered shadows, beautiful surfaces and textures, and other GPU-intensive flourishes. Any fan of Minecraft can tell you, however, that despite the depth of gameplay Minecraft is short on any of the graphical flourishes found in popular games. Shades can change all that.
Grass that waves in the wind, water that sparkles and reflects light, a sun that blazes brilliantly down and temporarily blinds you when you leave a dark cave: all these things and more are injected into the game via shaders. Read on as we show you how  to pair the sophisticated building experience Minecraft provides with equally as sophisticated graphics.
Note: A good resource pack pairs very nicely with a good shader. For the purposes of this tutorial, however, to showcase what shaders can do without any extra help we’ve opted to not use a special resource pack and to simply apply the shaders with the default Minecraft resource packs.
Getting Ready for Shaders
Before we actually jump into the eye candy that are shaders, let’s smooth the road before us by ensuring we’re ready for the experience.
Before experimenting with shaders you’ll definitely want to update your computer’s GPU drivers to the latest stable version. The more stable and bug-free your drivers are the better.
In addition to updating your drivers you’ll also want to ensure that your installation of Minecraft is properly modded with Forge installed. If you’ve dug into this tutorial without reviewing the previous lessons, now is the time to go back and review previous tutorials on modding [1] and instance management to ensure you’re up to speed with Forge installed and ready to go.
Note: It is possible to install shaders without Forge just like it’s possible to install Optifine without Forge. Given the benefit of using Forge and the great big world of awesome mods out there, however, we’re focusing on the Forge-centered installation for this tutorial.
Installing the Shaders Mod
Just like Forge serves as a platform for you to load additional mods, the Shaders Mod serves as a platform to load add-on shaders for Minecraft.
Visit the official Shaders Mod thread here [2] and download the most current Forge-based version; as of this tutorial it’s GLSL Shaders Mod v2.3.18 for Minecraft 1.7.10.
Place the .JAR file into your Minecraft /mods/ folder if you’re not using a mod manager. If you’re using MultiMC as we outlined in Lesson 5 (and we certainly hope you are), copy it first to your /Mods/ directory and then use the MultiMC mods menu for your instance to add the mod.
Run Minecraft once after the Shaders Mod is installed in order to confirm the installation (check your Mod menu or look in the Options menu for the “Shaders†button) and so that the /shaderpacks/ folder is created in your Minecraft root folder.
Locating and Installing Shader Packs
Unlike some of the other modification packs we’ve highlighted so far in the advanced Minecraft series, there isn’t a nice, neatly organized, central repository (or two) like there is for other resources such as resource packs, game mods, and so on.
Once you find a shader you’d like to take for a spin, you install it just like you install resource packs. Download the shader pack and place it into the /shaderpacks/ folder within your Minecraft root folder. Whether you’re using a regular Minecraft installation or a mod manager like MultiMC you’ll need to find the /shaderpacks/ folder and manually copy the files into it as there is no mechanism in MultiMC for managing shader packs. That said, you can use the “instance folder†shortcut in MultiMC to quickly jump to the root folder for that instance.
For the purposes of this tutorial we’ll be using Sonic Ether’s Unbelievable Shaders (SEUS) [5] as it is the gold standard for Minecraft shaders and an absolutely lovely piece of eye candy.
Valid shaders have the extension .FSH and .VSH. These shaders need to be located within either a folder or a .ZIP file clearly labeled and in the /shaderpacks/ folder. If you download a shader called SuperAwesomeShader for example, you need to have all the .FSH and .VSH files that came with that shader pack installed in your /shaderpacks/ folder in one of the following configurations:
Where all the .FSH and .VSH files are located either in the /shaders/ folder within the .ZIP archive or the folder. If the files are not placed in this directory format the Shaders Mod will not be able to load them.
Once you have downloaded the shader pack and copied the files (double-checking the directory structure) to the /shaderpacks/ folder, load up Minecraft.
Loading Shader Packs
Loading shader packs is almost as simple as loading resource packs. The only difference is that some shader packs will come with very small extra instructions (typically tweaks you need to make to the values in the Shaders menu).
Let’s take a look at how to load SEUS and what a difference it makes. Here’s a fun little glitch village we found that spawned in a lake. All that water is going to look pretty darn good when we flip over to using shaders so let’s test things out.
Press ESC to pull up the options menu and then click the “Shaders…†button to access the submenu.
Within that submenu you’ll see a list of your available shaders on the left-hand side and a list of option toggles on the right.
Before you select the SEUS shader, you need to check a few SEUS-related options. Check to ensure that “CloudShadow†is off, “tweakBlockDamage†is on, and “OldLighting†is off. Then select the SEUS shader file.
You’ll notice that the new view automatically starts rendering the moment you select it. Click done and sit back to survey your new ultra-shader-enhanced Minecraft experience.
Natural sun reflection, enhanced shadows, beautiful clouds, and something you can’t see in the screenshot: everything is moving. Advanced shaders like SEUS introduce water that ripples, trees and grass that sway in the breeze, and very realistic torch and lava movement.
Let’s fly around in creative mode and take some comparison shots. The only mods we have loaded besides the Shaders Mod and SEUS are Biomes O’ Plenty and Mo’ Villages (we’re using the same world for this shader test that we used in Lesson 6 to show off those two world-expanding mods).
The huge birch forests in Biomes O’ Plenty are awesome just by themselves, but with a good shader they become even more majestic. The image above shows the same location with the native Minecraft shader active on the left and the SEUS shader active in the right.
Above, is a shot of a lagoon next to our favorite Biomes O’ Plenty biome: the Seasonal Forest. The lovely colors of the Season Forest take on a whole new depth when the special lighting, haze, and shadow rendering of the new shader is applied. Like the previous image, the native shader is on the left and the SEUS shader is on the right.
Nighttime scenes are especially cool with a beefy shader applied. In the village above you can see the native shader on the left and the SEUS shader on the right. The light is much warmer in the SEUS shader and the light spill and eventual shadows are much more realistic.
This shot shows a mountain village (courtesy of Mo’ Villages). The left half of the image shows the cool white-spectrum lighting and the red lava with white lighting provided by the default shader. The right half of the image showcases how warm the village looks with the SEUS shader and how strongly the lava glows.
Exploring Other Shaders
Unless you attack your shader project with a very high-end graphics card, there’s a good chance you’ll need to experiment with which shaders and which version of those shaders (e.g. ultra, lite, etc.) you can use. We tend to aim big and then if our GPU can’t handle it, work down from there.
Here are a few other shaders for your consideration. The first is MrMeep’s Shaders [6] , seen above. It’s quite similar to the SEUS shader so if you have trouble with SEUS give MrMeeps a try.
If you’re looking for something totally different from the typical “It’s like blocky Skyrim!†look that many shaders give, Naelego’s Cel Shaders, seen above, is a nice change. The shader pack renders the Minecraft world in cel-animation style (similar to that found in video games like Borderlands and Okami). It’s a neat look and a definite departure from the vanilla Minecraft experience and the realistic lighting/water experience most shader packs provide.
Our final recommendation is for those of you with older computers that want the shader experience but without the GPU power for a beefy shader like SEUS. Paolo’s Lagless Shader [7] isn’t quite lagless on really old machines but it does offer the kind of features you expect in a shader like reflective water, dynamic lighting, and better shadows, without the huge overhead that comes with other shader packs. If you’ve tried the Lite version of other shaders and still been stuck at 1-5 FPS, give Paolo’s pack a shot.

Although you need a decent GPU to hack it, getting a powerful shader pack up and running is a sure fire way to absolutely supercharge your Minecraft experience and make the whole Minecraft world look new again.
