4:35pm ET - Vermont was the first state to introduce civil unions and give full marriage rights to same-sex couples in 2000 and legalized same-sex marriage in 2009. This came two hundred years after Charity Bryant and Sylvia Drake lived openly together as couple in Weybridge, Vermont. While you may think of it as a contemporary issue, the roots of same-sex marriage date back much farther than the 20th century. In her book Charity and Sylvia: A Same-Sex Marriage in Early America, author Rachel Hope Cleaves [1] explores the homosexual relationship between two women â€" Charity and Sylvia, and tells the story of how the post-colonial community accepted their partnership. The book also serves as a social crit ique of the history of same-sex marriages in the United States.
