Tech corner: Verizon travel apps put fun back in vacation

Looking to get in one more road trip before school begins?
Road trips are a classic American past time. Whether it’s heading to the beach, a family reunion, or just crisscrossing the country, we’re sure to create lasting memories. One of my favorite things is a quick weekend getaway to Pigeon Forge, Tenn. We’ve been there twice this summer and spent a week in a cabin.
One thing that’s different from the trips I took when I was a kid is the addition of my Verizon Wireless Droid Maxx, which acts as a guide along the way, all with the help of some great travel apps.
Here are some suggestions to download for your next trip:
Roadside America: This one makes sure you don’t miss out on all those crazy roadside attractions! It will show you where you can see a giant twine ball, crazy museum or hilarious statue, and get you back on track to your destination. (iPhone app, $2.99)
Food Tripping: It helps you fi nd alternatives to fast food places by showing you where to find local grocery stores, restaurants, even farmer’s markets. So you’ll eat like a local, and discover great places that may be off the beaten path. Believe me, some of the best foods are found in local establishments. (iPhone & Android, free)
Critter Cruise: Don’t leave the kids out of the fun. With this app, they can navigate their own road trip, while learning at the same time. Critter Cruise allows children to explore the U.S. and Canada by reading about some of the most famous roadside attractions and get quizzed in math and language arts along the way. (iPhone & Android, free).
I personally like the Food Tripping app, giving me a chance to explore restaurants that make each town we visit special.
These apps can also be used in day-to-day life or on a quick Saturday day trip around the state. I downloaded the Food Tripping app and have already referenced it to find a new local spot to eat! Let us know what fun apps you’re using this summer.
