Music

DJ Mel at Nasty’s. As many a University of Texas alum can attest, the longest running hip-hop weekly in town has been cranking out the party jams for close to 18 years. Every Monday, the inconspicuous, rugby-centric north campus dive bar best known for its pitchers of margaritas transforms into a booty-shaking hot spot. These days Mel is regularly called upon for high profile gigs, performing at festivals to audiences of thousands, but he still returns to Nasty’s whenever he’s in town. “It’s grounding,” he told us last year. It’s also a great way to kick off a week. $4. 10 p.m. Monday. 606 Maiden Lane.

Coming up

Music Under the Star. The popular â€" and free â€" summer concert series at the Bullock Texas State History Museum returns Friday for its 11th season. This year’s kickoff concert also includes the opening of a new exhibit in the museum’s rotunda. “When Austin Got Weird” showcases music posters from the 1960s and ’70s, all by local artists, and complements the museum’s “The 1968 Exhibit,” which is already open.

Continuing the 1960s psychedelic theme, Friday’s concert features two bands that first came on the scene then: Shiva’s Headband Experience and Roky Erickson. The music will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday outside on the museum plaza. Chairs and blankets are allowed, no coolers. Beer, soda and more food and drink will be for sale outside and in the museum store. The rest of the shows this year: Carrie Rodriguez and Tish Hinojosa (July 18), and Ray Benson with Milkdrive and Jason Roberts Band (July 25). Free parking after 6 p.m. in the garage. Information: TheStoryofTexas.com; 512-936-8746.
