On July 29, Apple officially introduced refreshes to the 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display lineup, with slight tweaks under the hood for the new models. Now that they’re available, Other World Computing thought it would be the right thing to do to get them unboxed, test their SSDs, and maybe even show off the internal layout.
OWC has provided a full gallery of unboxings from the 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, and there aren’t many surprises in store for anyone who expected slight changes with the new devices. On the outside, everything is the same, and on the inside, OWC found similar internal layouts from the previous generation after they did a teardown.
So, with the familiars out of the way, OWC turned to what’s new: the solid state drives, and sending them through some speed tests. They put the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display through its paces, revealing average random read/write speeds of 165/131 MB/s; while the average sequential read/write speeds were 263/244 MB/s. The entry-level 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro boasts a Marvell-controlled SanDisk SSD.
On the other hand, the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro boasts a Samsung-controlled Samsung SSD, with average random read/write speeds of 194/322 MB/s. The sequential read/write speeds measured up at 262/245 MB/s.
Earlier today, we saw the mid-2014 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display fall under its own performance benchmark tests.
