SpeedTest X Becomes A Much Improved SpeedSmart

There are many network speed testing apps in the App Store and one of my favourites has always been SpeedTest X.  It always provided me great information on my WiFi or 3G access speeds and it was a pretty appealing app visually.  That’s all changed with the relaunch of the app, now known as SpeedSmart.  SpeedSmart has become a universal app that provides you a huge amount of information about what is going on with your WiFi or GSM connectivity on your iPhone or iPad.

First thing you will notice about SpeedSmart is that it is completely redesigned.  Gone is the older look and feel of the app and in

comes in a light, refreshing iOS 7 look and feel.  It is far easier to navigate the app as it leverages all of the iOS 7 swipe navigation points and in general, the app performs even better.

When you perform a test with SpeedSmart, the app is far more intelligent than the prior release.  It leverages a all new high speed server network on the backend to test your network connectivity but it is also using improved algorithms in the app to provide more accurate “real world” results for your Ping, Download and Upload speeds.  One of the challenges with any network speed testing app is they treat your test as if it were in the lab.  SmartSpeed isn’t so much but I like that:  It’s what I can really expect from my GSM carrier or the local coffee shop’s WiFi.

After your testing is complete you have a full history page that gives you stats and locations of your tests on a map and you can clear all of that history with the tap of one button.  As you would expect, SpeedSmart is also socially connected so you can post your test results to Twitter, Facebook or email them and it shares the results image from your test with your networks.

On the iPad version of SmartSpeed you have two additional features.  First is a Timeline style history view and second is a global map of every speed test made in a specific area.

Overall I’m very impressed with the new changes to SmartSpeed and I think you will be too.

SmartSpeed is a free app and it is a universal app for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.  It requires iOS 7.0 to be running on your devices.  The app is ad supported but you can do an in-app purchase of .99 Cents to remove the ads.
