The Bethlehem Area Public Library is now entering its sixth month of offering free music downloads to library patrons through Freegal Music.
The library began its partnership [1] with Freegal in early December and has built a strong following.
Library card holders can download three free songs each week by visiting bapl.org [2] . The free downloads can be strictly songs or they can be a mix of music videos, which count as two downloads.
Freegal, “free†and “legal†music, is an online downloading service that allows patrons of different libraries across the country to download and keep three songs each week, or 156 songs per year. The new download counter resets on your computer at 12:01 a.m. every Monday.
Users have access to 7 million songs from dozens of genres available for download through Freegal from Sony, according to the Freegal website [3] .
Freegal is just one external downloading program for Bethlehem Area Public Library users. In addition, members can download ebooks and online magazines, but after an allotted time period those will be deleted from the users’ library. The ebooks and magazines are not part of the Freegal site; they’re part of the library’s collections.
Freegal is unique in that users can keep the mp3 versions of their songs for an unlimited amount of time.
Liza Holzinger, the public relations director for the Bethlehem Area Public Library, understands the impact of new technology on the library.
“The library is a 24/7 enterprise now and delivers information in many different formats,†Holzinger says.
The cost of Freegal is absorbed by the library’s budget; Holzinger says she has not noticed any impact on the library or its activities.
The Bethlehem Area Public Library plans to continue its partnership with Freegal to bring in new patrons.
Assistant Director Erin Poore is excited about the new possibilities this program provides for the library.
“The program is becoming very popular and is helping to make the library more marketable,†Poore says.
