Stymied
iPhone Game Review by TheiPhoneAppReview.com [1]
Be it with 100-piece puzzles or 1,000-piece puzzles, weâve all been stumped at least once before. Puzzles can definitely be fun but, at the same time, can be pretty frustrating at times too.
If youâre someone that enjoys this challenge though, Stymied [2] , developed by Warwick Blent [3] , is sure to keep you plenty flustered but also very entertained.
Concept and Functionality:

A perfect combination of Tetris and shape-shifting puzzles, Stymied is a game that involves not only good foresight but also some luck. If you arenât too sure about your puzzle skills, there are a number of levels you can choose from if you want to test out your abilities.
Itâs usually safe to go with âBeginnersâ if youâve never played a game before, but for those of you who are champion puzzle-solvers, you can try your luck at the âIntermediateâ or even âAdvancedâ levels.
Once you select a level, youâre given a number of different shapes to choose from â" shapes that are configured to fit the Tetris blocks that you are given. If youâre a little confused, Stymied will start you off with a big shape that needs to be filled with other smaller shapes, like the ones seen in the Tetris game.
This sounds fairly simple, but what makes the game challenging is that youâll need to fit the shapes together in a way that also fit within the larger shape.
As you progress into the higher levels, the larger shapes become more complex and you also have the option of choosing between âdoublesâ and âtreblesâ in intermediate and even âquadruplesâ in advanced, representing the number of pieces that youâll need to decide between to fit into the shapes.
Features:

With so many puzzles within each level, Stymied is certainly not an app that youâll tire of quickly. Each shape that needs to be completed is different from the next one, so youâll need to keep thinking of ways to strategize and find how the pieces will work.
The graphics of this app will not âwowâ you but then again this is the kind of game where they have to. In fact, the simple graphics fit the game quite well since they donât detract from the problem solving.
Depending on how well you do in each of the levels, youâll get an award for your accomplishments. If you like, you can also switch out the colors of your blocks between blue and a variety of colors, for aesthetic reasons (or if you feel the need to change your luck somehow).
Value:

Thereâs been a trend in apps that test and train your memory and intelligence, and Stymied is, indirectly, one of these apps, which makes it even better. As a puzzle app, itâs challenging and forces you to think outside of the box (or in this case, outside of the shape).
As an app that teases the mind, Stymied is a challenging game app and doesnât get old (unless somehow you manage to beat all of the levels). Regardless, as a completely free app, itâs definitely worth a download. Itâs a fun and familiar yet new experience and really gets you thinking whenever you feel the need to train your brain.
Stymied requires iOS 5.1 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review. [4]
