Try Our Top Free Game Of 2013

If you've been reading George's excellent round-up of Gizmo's top 10 free PC games, as some 74,000 of you have been, you'll probably have noticed that the top spot in the list is occupied by something called The Dark Mod.  And you've probably wondered whether it's worth downloading it.  If so, then allow me to pass on some brief details of my experiences in doing just that.

The Dark Mod is, frankly, a superb game.  It's up there with some of the top paid-for games, and yet it's completely free and will occupy your mind for hours.  TDM is a graphical adventure-type game.  There are things to find, puzzles to solve, locks to pick, and all sorts of other things that I won't mention for fear of spoiling the surprise.  It's definitely worth a try, and works just fine on any recent version of Windows (I used 8.0).

To download the game, start by making a folder on your PC (it doesn't matter where).  Then download the TDM Updater from http://www.thedarkmod.com/download-the-mod/ [1] and unzip it into that folder.  Next, run the updater program, and it'll download the full game into the folder.  Be aware (indeed, be VERY aware) that, although the updater is only a 3 MB download, the full game that it then downloads amounts to 2.25 GB (that's 2250 MB) of files.  Unless you have a reasonably fast broadband connection and a decent monthly download limit, this may cause you problems.

Once the download is complete, there's nothing to install or configure.  Just look for TheDarkMod.exe in your folder and run it, and the game will load.  No registration required.

TDM is stunning.  Give it a try.  You'll not be disappointed.
