Rovio Unveils All New Fantasy RPG Game ‘Angry Birds Epic’ for iPad and iPhone

AB-Epic-quarter-1024The Angry Birds franchise is probably the biggest game title since Mario Brothers. Ask anyone with an iPhone or iPad (or an Android device, for that matter) and they will probably admit to at least having played the game once or twice. Today, the franchise’s creator, Rovio, announced yet another addition to the family of birds and pigs. Only this time, there are no catapults and flinging fowl. This time, the adventure is “Epic.”

“Angry Birds Epic,” according to the game maker’s blog [1] , is “an adventure role-playing game (RPG) set in a fantasy version of Piggy Island.” Instead of aiming your bird at a precariously positioned structure to try to knock it down, players will embark on a epic journey with turn-based combat, a story rich campaign, and the ability to craft weapons, armor, and potions with resources farmed from within the game.

Rovio released a soft launch of the game in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand today with more countries to follow later this spring. The game maker regularly releases games first in the above-mentioned countries so they can get a feel for how a widespread public launch works before unleashing it on the bigger markets. The company likes to get feedback and opinions from larger populations than a beta test can offer, so they can make tweaks to the software before releasing games worldwide.

Last month, Rovio teased a new game in the franchise called “Angry Birds Stella,” due out this fall. That game also promises to offer something different for fans of the fat bird phenomenon.

If you live in Canada, Australia, or New Zealand, you can download the game in your country’s App Store now. The rest of us will just have to wait a few weeks longer. Visit the game’s official website [2] to stay up to date on future launch news.
