A new app called Seene [1] Â popped up on the App Store last night that lets you create interactive 3D photos. If youâve used Vine before, youâre already familiar with most of Seeneâs interface. The apps are laid out mostly the same, even down to the location of the sharing options during seene creation, but the process for taking photos is a little more complicated. The resulting effect is worth a little extra effort though.
To create a seene, you need to find a fairly stationary object that you want to photograph and take an initial capture. This is just like taking a picture, except you need to verify that there are enough green motion-tracking dots on the screen to track your rotation around the item (the app will tell you if there are too few dots).
Once youâve got the first photo taken, you just need to carefully rotate your phone around the subject. You donât need to go far, and once youâve gone far enough in one direction the app will light up one of four indicators. Once all four indicators light up, the app stitches the images together and creates an interactive 3D photo.
When viewing seenes in your feed, the app uses your iPhoneâs gyroscope to detect device movement and rotate the image accordingly. When viewed on a computer, you can move the photo around by dragging your mouse over it.
Unfortunately, not all seenes work out so well. Some objects, especially things that are clear or have porous surfaces, donât return such great results.
Glitches aside, the app provides a cool effect for your photos, provided you have a steady hand and the patience to retry a few times as needed. In my opinion, the app could still use a designerâs touch, but donât let that stop you from taking it for a spin. Seene is available for free on the App Store [2] .
