Pedometer++ gives you a peek at the motion data logged by the M7

m7 coprocessor
The iPhone 5s ships with the new M7 motion coprocessor that tracks your movement throughout the course of the day. If you have an iPhone 5s and want to peek at what the M7 is tracking on your behalf, then check out the Pedometer++ app [1] from developer David Smith [2] .

The Pedometer++ app is a basic app that pulls it data exclusively from the M7 chip using the API provided by Apple. It shows your measured steps for the day and the accumulated steps for the last 7 days. You can also turn on a badge step count which will display your steps on the homescreen. It’s updated regularly so you will have a decent snapshot of the steps that you have taken throughout the day.

Pedometer++ doesn’t do much beyond track your steps, but it’ll fit the bill for iPhone 5s owners who want to see what the M7 chip is measuring. The M7 uses a gyroscope, an accelerometer and a compass to track your motion. It processes the data from this trio of sensors and converts it into steps without relying on the power-hungry A7 and its GPS. In the end, you get step data with minimal battery consumption, which is a win-win situation in my book.

You can download Pedometer++ [3] from the iOS App Store for free. It’ll only work with devices that have an M7 chip, which right now is the iPhone 5s. If you have a 5s and are running Pedometer++, let us know what you think about it in the comments.
