When Apple announced that it would be shutting down MobileMe, the company offered customers an extra 20GB of iCloud storage space as an incentive for them to switch to iCloud. The complimentary storage space offer has now expired and users would be downgraded to the basic 5GB free plan, unless they’ve already purchased extra iCloud storage.
Apple had started notifying users about the expiry of their bonus storage a few weeks ago , so that they can accordingly scale down their usage to fit into the free 5GB tier.
In a support article [1] , Apple writes:
Former MobileMe members received a complimentary storage plan after moving to iCloud between October 12, 2011, and August 1, 2012. On September 30, 2013, the complimentary iCloud storage plans expired and were automatically adjusted to the free 5 GB plan. If you already purchased a storage plan, no further action is required.
If you want to keep your extra 20GB of storage, you’ll have to purchase it for $40 per year. You can also expand that extra space to 50GB for $100 per year. These allotments are added to the standard 5GB everyone receives as part of iCloud’s basic service.
If you’re above 5GB of usage but don’t want to purchase extra storage, you can bring down your usage by deleting iCloud backups, your Documents in the cloud and mails. Until you do this, usual iCloud features like backups, document syncing etc. won’t work.
Apple has often been criticised for having low storage space in its free tier plan, even if the user owns multiple iOS devices. Do you think the company should allot free storage based on how many iOS devices are tied to an iCloud ID, especially since backups are counted in the 5GB usage?
