There’s an app for that!

For college students, especially on-campus residents, personal safety is a very important matter.  Walking back from a night class or other event in the dark, staying in a dorm room when the roommate(s) are away, or dealing with any unexpected situation can be pretty scary at times.  Luckily, IU students can now use their smartphones to help them in such times of need.

Starting this academic year, Immaculata University has become one of a number of college campuses around the country that are on the BlueLight app.  This app is designed to make students feel safer on campus and give them a quick way to receive help if a situation turns sketchy.

The BlueLight app operates through special BlueLight towers located in the surrounding area.  The manufacturers partner with the university to implement the dispatch software.

When students open the app, they will find two buttons: one says Campus Safety, and the other says Alert Contacts.  These allow users to immediately reach their campus’ safety personnel, or also contact specific numbers that they input into the app as their emergency contacts.

“Our team made the product to get people help as quick as possible when they need it and where they need it.  It is designed to be simple, easy to use, and trustworthy,” expains Preet Anand, founder of the BlueLight app.  Currently, it is available to download for free on iPhone and Android devices.  Depending on student demand, the app may become available for Windows Phone in early 2014.

The BlueLight team always wants to hear more about how they can make the app better, so feel free to download it and send them some feedback!  More information can be found at www.getbluelight.com.
