Apple passes sugar-water maker Coca-Cola to become the world's most valuable brand

Every year since the year 2000, a company called Interbrand has released a list of the world’s most valuable brands. Watching those brands rise and fall on that list has been both incredibly entertaining and horribly depressing, and this year is no different [1] . In 2011, Apple was the 8th most valuable brand. We all know what happened in 2011, right? The iPhone 4 came out, arguably one the company’s most iconic devices. A year later, in 2012, they became number two. This year, they’re now on top. They surpassed sugar-water maker Coca-Cola, which is now number three.

What does it mean to have a brand worth $98.3 billion? That depends. Normal consumers probably don’t care. I mean, if Apple is number one and Coca-Cola is number three, does that really mean anything to the average person on the street? Nope. That being said, it’s nice to be the person in the room who attracts the most attention, right? And that’s Apple.

Where does Google sit in all this? Right on Apple’s tail at number two. That shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone considering how much of an integral part of everyone’s lives Google has become. But here’s a fun little piece of information that’ll make you start questioning the credibility of this list: Microsoft is in fifth place and McDonald’s sits on top of Samsung at seventh place.

But yeah, circling back to what I said earlier: We’re number one, yay!
