Texting and Driving? There’s an App for THAT!

by ddb | July 9th, 2013

If you’re a parent worried about your teen texting and driving, there’s an app to stop it. Several app developers have come up with high-tech ways to allow parents to prevent their teens from texting and driving.

An overwhelming 75% of teens admit to text messaging while driving. Everyone is aware that texting and driving is extremely dangerous. For a person who may be uncoordinated, texting correctly can be difficult even when sitting stationary at a desk, so imagine how much concentration it takes for a new driver to text while going 50 to 60 miles per hour. Text messaging while driving is 23 times more likely to cause an accident [1] .

Here are a few of the most popular apps downloaded to prevent texting and driving:

DriveOff is a free Android app developed by car insurance company, E-Sure. It can detect when a driver is traveling more than ten miles per hour and will shut off any apps that may be distracting to the driver. The app also temporarily stops incoming calls and text messages.

DriveMode is another app that is free to AT&T customers for Android devices. The app launches once a car is moving faster than 25 miles per hour.  The app responds to all incoming texts and emails to let them know the recipient is driving and cannot respond at the moment.  While the driver is behind the wheel, the app turns off all notifications of text messages and e-mails and sends all incoming calls to voicemail.

Mobiloc is similar to the other apps but is available for the iPhone. This app interferes with the normal operation of the iPhone once the vehicle is in motion. When the iPhone stops moving, the app shuts off and allows the owner to use the phone again.

Parents should warn their teenagers of the dangers of texting and driving and may want to research further on these apps to prevent texting and driving.
