Within the past couple of hours alone, a spate of total price drops have come upon a number of popular iOS apps and games. If this curious occurrence is any indication, Apple may be preparing a major blowout in celebration of the App Store’s fifth anniversary on Wednesday, July 10.
As noted by 148Apps [1] , the flurry of notable iOS titles that have gone completely free includes the critically and commercially successful Infinity Blade II [2] , Where’s My Water? [3] and Tiny Wings [4] .
Infinity Blade II [5] , the sequel to the original Infinity Blade [6] hack-and-slash game developed by Chair Entertainment and Epic Games, normally costs $6.99. But for the first time since its release in 2011, it’s now available to download for free.
Also free for the first time since its launch in 2011 is Disney’s Where’s My Water? [7] , which is previously priced at $0.99. This seminal physics-based puzzle game has resulted in a couple of spin-off games, namely, Where’s My Perry? [8] and Where’s My Mickey? [9] .
Tiny Wings [10] for iPhone, which usually costs $0.99, and Tiny Wings HD [11] for iPad, which normally goes for $2.99, are also free for the time since they were released in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Created by indie developer Andreas Illiger, this game is an App Store success story unto itself.
A couple of other games of note that have gone free for the first time are Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP [12] , normally $4.99, and Badland [13] , normally $3.99. The former, released by Superbrothers and Capybara Games in 2011, is a quirky adventure game, while the latter, released by Frogmind just three months ago, is an atmospheric platformer game.
Of course, the App Store is not all about fun and games, so to speak. So it’s only fitting that Apple’s prospective App Store blowout should include noteworthy apps as well.
So far, several apps of note that have gone free, also for the first time, are the $4.99 journaling app Day One [14] by Bloom Built, the $4.99 interactive 3-D globe app Barefoot World Atlas [15] by Touch Press, and the $1.99 photo overlay app Over [16] by Potluck.
Also joining the celebration are the iPhone and iPad editions of Native Instruments’ pro DJ software: Traktor DJ [17] , normally $19.99, and Traktor DJ for iPhone [18] , normally $4.99, are now both available to download for free in the App Store.
Of course, we’ll let you know if some more popular apps and games follow suit and become free to download as well.
