In the summer of 2011, jailbreak developers participated in a cool project called tweak week . Several devs each took a week, and released one new jailbreak tweak everyday. It went on for 3+ months, and we got several great tweaks out of it.
One of those tweaks was ToDoNotes, by TwitkaFly developer moeseth, which added a notepad to the Spotlight page that talked with the Notes app, giving you quick access to your memos. And version 2 just came out with iOS 6 supportâ¦
Hereâs our review of the original tweak:
For the most part, version 2 of the tweak is exactly like the first. Thereâs no settings to configure, or icons to worry about. Once installed, just navigate to your deviceâs Spotlight page and you should see what looks like the outline of a notepad.
The only thing that has changed in ToDoNotes 2 is the way that you add notes to the Spotlight page. Instead of merely tapping the share icon at the bottom of the Notes app, you have to hold it down to access the âPush to ToDoNotesâ option.
I usually disable my Spotlight page, as I havenât quite figured out a good use for it yet. But if you frequently use the search tool, this could come in handy for things like todo lists, telephone messages and anything else you need to reference quickly.

After aliens invade a town in the Old West, Cowboy Jed must protect the artificial brains from a horde of brain-hungry zombies. As the player, you can protect artificial brains from swarms of angry zombies by using tons of different weapons, abilities and even with your pet dragonâs flaming breath!
The opening animation has some translation snafus that, when paired with the energetic soundtrack, really calls to mind the infamous âAll your base are belong to usâ meme. Once you get past that opening animation, however, the game gets far more promising.
You need to fire upon three tiers of incoming zombies. As you progress in the game, Cowboy Jed can afford to upgrade his weapon from a simple pistol to all kinds of cool things: wizardâs staffs, spells, bazookas, lightning, and more.
In terms of interface, the game is fairly well designed. The end of wave menus are a little cluttered, and could be streamlined to be less confusing. Overall, the shop and the game are easy enough to navigate.
One thing I really appreciate is that you are rewarded for making precise shots. Youâll fell an enemy zombie much quicker is you can consistently hit it in the head with your blasts, a feature that makes the game all the more rewarding.
With colorful character designs, a ton of cool weapons, and addictive gameplay, there are plenty of  things to like about this game. Despite a few flaws, itâs a must-try for anyone who loves shooting up the undead!

The mainstream has had little reason to care that Android gives developers much more customization freedom than iOS. But if Facebookâs fabled Android homescreen is a hit, the stubbornness of Appleâs closed mobile platform could be framed as a drawback after years of its cohesive design and ease being seen as assets.
Cheapness and handset/carrier choice are two of the biggest factors convincing people to pick up Android phones today. Thereâs its premier integration of Googleâs app suite and the ârebel without an iPhoneâ attitude too. But Androidâs flexibility for app developers has been more of a selling point for geeks and early adopters than for the average Joe.
Meanwhile, the straight forward âit just worksâ aspect of iOS that leans on its rigidity has made it a popular introduction to smartphones for hundreds of millions of people. There just hasnât been a killer brand name app to grab the mainstreamâs attention that depends on Androidâs cooperative architecture and that iOS wonât support. No one has forced the issue of open vs closed on the common man.
But six years after the iPhoneâs debut, the average mobile consumer has matured. They crave more personalization through homescreen widgets and custom launchers. They want to make their phone truly theirs. The mobile world may finally have reached the turning point where the benefits of Androidâs customization outweigh the benefits of iOSâ simplicity. And itâs Facebook homescreen for Android that could crystallize this moment.
Last week, Facebook sent out invites to a big press event to âsee our new home on Androidâ. My sources got us the scoop that Facebook plans to unveil a new homescreen for Android that pipes in its news feed content and notifications for instant access. Weâre told this experience will be debuted on an HTC handset running a version of Android thatâs been modified by Facebook. The homescreen replacement is also likely to make its way to other handsets, either in the form a launcher app that can run on standard Android builds, or through Facebook partnerships with other OEMs.
The kicker is that Facebookâs homescreen cannot run on iOS as it exists today.
Now, for any of this to actually alter the mobile landscape, Facebook âHomeâ as it may be called will have to be a real success. Not just âOh that looks coolâ, but âI need to have that on my phoneâ. A lot people will never say that, because they just donât care that much about Facebook. Beyond that, it may be tough to add a lot of value on top of the full-featured Facebook For Android app thatâs just a few taps away.
Still, itâs possible that Facebookâ heads up display, a sixth sense for your social life , could be good enough to shift the balance in the Game Of Phones. Even if not directly or immediately, the mere existence of Facebook Home could bring the open/closed debate into the sphere of public consciousness. In that sense, it could at least begin to generate momentum for Androidâs âdo as you pleaseâ ecosystem.
Apple is typically resistant to diverging from its roadmap to head off potential threats. As Iâve said, Apple doesnât care what competitors do . But if it stays locked down, we might outgrow its hand-holding. For all Googleâs talk off Android being open, it could take Facebook to make us realize its liberty we really want.

Buried deep in the iOS Settings app, at the bottom of the Accessibility window, is a feature called AssistiveTouch . Apple built this tool to make its mobile devices more accessible to users with impaired physical or motor skills.
Enabling the feature adds a tiny icon to your deviceâs screen that typically, when tapped, opens a menu with shortcuts for a variety of system functions. But with the new MyAssistive jailbreak tweak, you can change thatâ¦
MyAssistive is a simple little utility that lets you customize the AssistiveTouch button to your liking. You can change where itâs positioned on your deviceâs screen, the color of its menu icons and, most importantly, what it does.
Once installed, all of these options can be configured from within your Settings app. Thereâs toggles for enabling the tweak, turning off its âsnap to positionâ and âhideâ functions, and a menu of actions you can assign to the button.
The list of actions is long, and includes toggle app switcher, toggle Siri, toggle voice control, take screenshot, triple click, adjust volume, mute, respring, and toggle LED flash. Remember to enable AssistiveTouch before trying them.
Overall I like MyAssistive, as it offers quick access to some useful functions. But I have a few issues with it. One, you can only assign one action to the button at a time. And two, I havenât found a spot to put it where itâs not in the way.
So Iâll probably be sticking with tweaks like Activator and NCSettings â"they do most of the same things. But itâs still worth checking out for folks that are looking for a change. You can find MyAssistive in the BigBoss repo for free.

One of the most mind-bending articles I read this week was Ethan Wattersâs piece âWe Arenât the World [1] ,â from the Pacific Standard. Watters writes about a team of researchers whose work indicates that cultural difference is not just a matter of varied manifestations of universal human qualitiesâ"it actually influences basic decision making and cognitive patterns. Their studies have found that subjects from different cultures react in widely differing ways to simple tests, like games based on the prisonerâs dilemma. The real catch of this research is that Westerners, and particularly Americans (who are the subjects of the vast majority of studies in the psychological literature), turn out to be outliers by almost any measure the team examined. This means that most of what we think we know about how humans think might apply only a small minority of people. Watters is concise and engaging in his description of Henrichâs research and its ramifications. By the end of the piece, you have the shaky feeling that you live in a world full of what Donald Rumsfeld would call unknown unknowns.
Hereâs something else that I didnât know that I didnât know: Auto-tune, the pitch correcting software that many music purists consider a major culprit in the ruin of modern pop, was invented by a classical flautist and geophysicist who developed it from technology that is used to find oil reserves. In The Verge, Lessley Anderson writes a comprehensive history of Auto-tune [2] , from its oil-field days, to that Cher song, to the artists who use it without sounding like T-Pain. Conventional opinion, Ã la Jay-Z [3] , holds that Auto-tune is an affront to musical authenticity, but Anderson explores the question of whether Auto-tuned vocals are all that different from any other manipulation in music production, and whether musical authenticity is even a meaningful value in an age when we walk around with thousands of bands and performances in digital form in our pockets.
In Fortune, Matthew Shaer tells the story of Ilya Zhitomirskiy [4] , who killed himself in 2011 after struggling to get his open-source social-networking site, Diaspora, off the ground. Zhitomirskiy was a free-culture idealist who aimed to liberate information from monetized structures. Diaspora, which set crowd-funding records in 2010, was lauded as the anti-Facebook and Zhitomirskiy as the peopleâs Zuckerberg. Shaerâs piece looks at the last year and half of Zhitomirskiyâs life, and how his idealistic aspirations went hand-in-hand with fragility and self-doubt. The story invites comparisons to the life and death of Aaron Swartz (Larissa MacFarquhar wrote about him for this magazine). Are thwarted information sharers the emblematic tragic figures of our time? The romantic poets had Thomas Chatterton [5] , who died for his artâ"or maybe from syphilis, which was the less-romantic plague of his moment. We have Swartz and Zhitomirskiy, who died for free-informationâ"or maybe from depression, too-high expectations, and neglected mental illness, which are often-ignored plagues of our own era.
For a story that sometimes feels like it could have happened last week, although it actually took place a hundred years ago, read Bill Donahueâs account of the early-twentieth-century celebrity, Naked Joe Knowles [6] in Boston Magazine. In 1913, Knowles decided he would test the ability of man to survive in nature, so he went into the Maine woods, taking nothing with him, to survive there by his wits. Thereâs a wonderful image of him walking into the forest, to the wonder of an admiring crowd, and then throwing his one piece of clothing, a cotton jockstrap, over his shoulder in a gesture of absolute primitivism. He wrote dispatches to a Boston newspaper on birch bark for the next two months, then emerged from the woods, draped in the skin of a bear he claimed to have killed with a club. Donahue calls Knowles the âreality star of his day.â And all the elements are there: the visually arresting stunt, the gimmick press releases, the large but less-than-heroic personality, and, finally, the revelation that the whole thing might have been faked.
And finally, in another story of a man living out-of-time, Ariel Sabar writes in the Washingtonian about Kigeli V. Ndahindurwa, the former king of Rwanda [7] who had to flee his country and now lives on public assistance in Virginia. At seven-foot-two, the king has an outsized presence that fits his larger-than-life story. His long limbs and his regal habits are both cramped by his present life, which is, in many ways, the life of much of the colonialized world, writ small. But one of the most surprising things in this extraordinary story might have been the mention of the Monarchist League, âa 70-year-old British group that campaigns for the preservation and restoration of kingdoms the world over, largely through receptions and newsletters.â Thereâs another great magazine piece in the making.
