Well, if youâve been anxiously awaiting the arrival of iTunes 11, the moment has finally arrived. Packed full of interesting new interface tweaks and increased iCloud support, the new iTunes is a welcome site for a service that was showing its age.
Of course, thatâs not to say iTunes 10 is a dinosaur, by any means. But the entire application has seen very little in the way of true design improvements in recent years, and the user interface change of iTunes 11 will hit you first after the download [1] .
When Eddy Cue took to the stage this fall [2] to announce the new features of iTunes 11, the plan was to release the update sometime in October. Unfortunately, the launch was later pushed to November [3] , and with but a few days left in the month, todayâs the day.
While still immediately familiar to any iTunes user, the new redesign definitely adds some much needed change. Playlist creation is now a snap; a dedicated drop-down pane makes creating a playlist a simple drag-and-drop experience.Â
In fact, the entire visual presentation of iTunes 11 seems more efficient. Nearly every bit of space within the applicationâs window feels utilized, but amazingly, not cluttered.Â
Apple has also worked in increased iCloud support, including a handy function which allows you to seamlessly wander from device to device, without losing your place. For instance, if you start watching an episode of Breaking Bad on your MacBook, you could finish the episode win you arrive home, in front of your Apple TV. Pretty darn cool.
Additionally, all purchased content â" music, movies, etc. â" will actually appear in your iCloud-synced library immediately across all devices. Thereâs no need to actually download the content for it to sync.Â
Of course, all of the functions were announced previously, but as noted by 9to5Mac [4] , Apple still had one trick up its sleeve. You can now redeem a physical iTunes card by holding it up to your iSight camera (or any PC camera).Â
We live in the future, guys.
